Glen Mason (official thread)

Mason sure has his shortcomings, but what caliber of coach wants that job? Their football atmosphere is quite lame.
I wouldn't count on beating IN or ILL consistently in the future.

Right on all points. Though I hope the atmosphere changes when they open that new outdoor stadium. Maybe the next coach can do something there, but it will be built with the help of Mason's influence there.

Mason took Minny from bottom feeder to average in the Big Ten. He couldn't get them over the next hump. As bad of a coaching job as he did in the bowl game, my guess is his replacement will do worse.

The state isn't exactly a hot bed for talent (and the few good ones leave the state anyway), You cannot compair Minny's program with a program like Illi. Illi has talent in state, Minny has to import talent... tough sell when your program is average.

My guess is Minny will compete with NU and IU for the bottom feeders within the next couple of years...

This could be good for NU and IU... Mason had Ohio connections and brough in a lot of Ohio talent. If the new coach doesn't have those types of connections this could help the other lower level Big Ten teams when recruiting Ohio kids...

This may be a little ridiculous to suggest, but what are the chances Mason is offered a position in some capacity by Gene Smith. Maybe come in as co-offensive coordinator, assistant head coach, or run-game coordinator. I doubt this will even be a possibility, as Mason will probably take a lower-tier, "Bowl Subdivision" head coach. It would be fun though to have him come in and install that zone-blocking scheme though. Probably wouldn't make much since with the power back we're about to have for the next two years, but it was just a thought.

Personally, I like Mason and want to see him succeed. I thought the talks of him being fired this year were just ridiculous. That team fought through a lot of adversity this year. I think Mason is one of the good guys in the Big Ten.

[sarcasm]Well they could offer Zook.

After all, he really has done all he is capable of doing at Illinois.[/sarcasm]

(For those on FF that is in sarcasm font)

Here is a link to the GoldenSports.net story on Mason's firing.

And in passing, doesn't golden sports sound like something CCI might give us a link to in the RR?

Noteworthy - the GoldenSports story makes clear that this is a comprehensive house cleaning at Minnesota. So, in any discussions of future coaching candidates there is absolutely no chance of an assistant being elevated.

Mason hit his wall of accomplishment, much like he has every other stop he's made. He cannot coach good teams to be great, or even decent teams to be good...he can get a crappy team to be mediocre and that's about it.

I imagine the stadium and all that has something to do with this move as well...they are desperate for positive PR as they try and justify the cost and location of the stadium, and "We'll be 7-5 for the next 20 years!" isn't going to do that.

You don't think going to Minny is better than Marshall? Guys want to be head coaches, and Minny is not a bad program.

I don't know. I'd probably take Marshall over Minnesota. My quote wasn't meant to be taken 100% seriously. I'm sure he would leave for the possibility of being a head coach.
