Glen Mason (official thread)

I doubt Minnesota continues to mine Columbus for players anymore. That pipeline is closed.

Probably right, but it's not like there's a large number of guys they had that we'd really need anyway. Wheelright, for example, has plenty of talent but doesn't seem to work very hard...and we have plenty of guys better than him already.

People have been talking up the job Mason has done at Minnesota, and relatively speaking he may have overachieved for being at Minnesota.

If you look at the talent he's had the past few years though, I think you could argue that he's underachieved. Minnesota plays a cupcake schedule. They have consistently had NFL talent at RB, TE, and to a lesser extent, on the OL. I know their defense is soft, but if you have that kind of talent at those positions, you should be able to win more consistently.

What about Larry Coker? This might be the best job that Coker would have the juice to get right now, and Coker is about the best guy on the market that Minnesota would be able to land. Plus the timing is perfect. Could be a good match - even if it means Minnesota would still suck.

Minnesota is in the midst of a major facility upgrade...that would be a no-brainer.

That's true, plus they play in a high profile conference. I picked Marshall partially because they seem to be recruiting better and have a great fanbase. They have lower standards than a Minnesota so just getting to a bowl game could open up some doors. But you're probably right that Minnesota overall is the best job.

Mark May more or less blasted the U of M. He called them a middle of the road Big ten team and said thats what they were always going to be. Then he suggested hiring the D coord . from tsun

Evidently I wasn't the only one who wondered just how you blow a thirty-one point lead in the third quarter. On the other hand, just what do Minnesota fans expect? Bronco Nagurski hasn't been on campus in a while and yet Mason has brought in some very exciting players. If they think they're going to go toe-to-toe with the money Michigan and Ohio State... or even Wisconsin... can throw at the problems they have, they're nuts.

"Minnesota fired coach Glen Mason on Sunday, two days after the Gophers blew a 31-point third-quarter lead against Texas Tech and exactly one year after signing a four-year contract extension.
Mason was 64-57 in 10 years at Minnesota and led the Gophers to seven bowl games. But he was just 3-4 in those games, with his latest loss proving to be the backbreaker despite the lengthy contract extension.
The 44-41 loss in the Insight Bowl, the biggest comeback in bowl history, dropped the Gophers to 6-7 for the season, the first time the Gophers have finished under .500 in five years.
"If we had not lost the way we had lost, I don't think we'd be here today," athletic director Joel Maturi said.
Mason issued a statement that said he was given "no specific explanation" for his firing during a phone call from Maturi.
"Needless to say, I am extremely disappointed, however I respect the decision of my superiors, Mr. Joel Maturi and President Robert Bruininks," Mason said.
For the second time in just over a month, the university will be forced to buy out the contract of a coach of one of the school's big sports. Men's basketball coach Dan Monson was ousted just seven games into the season.
Mason was being paid $1.65 million annually and it will cost the university $2.2 million to buy him out."

I didn't have to wonder how they could blow the lead. They are Minnesota. It is in their mein. That team is into losing so much they believe that any other team can beat them IF the other team gets momentum. They believe that because their defense wears out. They haven't the depth on the team to sustain. That has been Mason's problem for years.
Remember Greg Frye? We overcame a 30 plus deficit in Minn.
So there it is. team psyche and depth.

Glen Mason remains a Buckeye. He took a bottom feeder and moved them from comedy to challenger. He did all of this without even a stadium of his own on campus and without any NCAA violations.

Minnesota will be sorry that they fired Mason because it doesn't get any better for them than this.

Glen, take you $4 million dollar payout and enjoy it. Good luck in your next post. :osu:
