DBF: "I'm not sure if they will be better if they can't resign Dooling,Haslem, and Damon Jones, plus a couple of other guys who are free agents next year. They only have like six guys under contract next year and with Shaq getting 30 million and Eddie Jones 14 million that gives them very little space to work with, I think they're already over the cap with just six guys."

Why would they want to resign any of those guys? The best of the bunch, Damon Jones, is a role player (at best) who can't get his own shot. Dooling stinks, and Haslem's a rebounder. Nothing more.

It doesn't take much to replace those guys with cheaper options. And if they lose them, no big deal either.

To me, the Heat are done for one reason, and for one reason only: the Big Man is past his prime. From now on, Shaq's seasons will mirror this one: big regular season, but injuries will derail the train at the end of each season.

The Fakers knew what they were doing when they didn't want to extend him 2 more years at $30 a clip.

If wade is not hurt, the pistons lose one of the last two games. They might not be as good of a team, but Flash and Shaq were pretty dominant at times (regardless of whether or not you hate Shaq's fouls).

This doesn't take away from the gritty play of the pistons, I just think Wade's health tipped this series in their favor.

I actually root for the pistons occasionally, and they are a clutch team. I just think that if Wade hadn't been gimpy, he would have been able to continue to take over Game 7 and would not have done those strange flip fingerrolls on his drives. Not trying to make excuses, the better team did win, but I think Wade would have made the difference at full strength.

The Pistons get little respect from the media, so I expect that the Wade injury will be mentioned often. Last year, nobody gave them a chance against the Lakers. After they destroyed them, some media types argued that they actually got lucky in playing the Lakers, that the Spurs would have been a much tougher team to beat. Somebody even listed the Pistons as one of top "worst teams to win an NBA title". Gee, if the Lakers had won, would they have been on the list?

They should have been, as I don't think I've seen more guys so selfish than the lakers. I've seen teams filled with primadonnas, but usually those guys can at least be focused on winning. Last year's lakers team was a disgrace.

I agree the Pistons do not get nearly enough credit. I wish Wade would have been healthy, b/c Detroit's clutch play especially with guys like Billups (who only makes threes when he's well covered it seems) would have been a great matchup. It was a great game anyway, you just hate to see any side be at less than full strength.

Tibbs: "Somebody even listed the Pistons as one of top "worst teams to win an NBA title"."

People in the media have the shortest memory. What about these teams in the non-dynasty 70's?

'74-75 Golden State Warriors
'77-78 Washington Bullets
'78-79 Seattle Supersonics

Those three teams are basically the equal of the Pistons team last year. Plus, I think the '54-55 Syracuse Nats would've gotten smoked by the Pistons (White Men Can't Jump).

Umm... please correct me if I'm misunderstanding something... but.. umm... is there a real... and somewhat heated... discussion involving the NBA going on here? I figured this thread was a cheap Al Gore invented knock off.

Huh?

I thought that league folded... what do you know?

Been a Pistons fan for my whole life (originally from Fremont, Ohio near Toledo) so I was on the edge of my seat last night. I might agree that Wade not being 100% made a small difference, but to say that fouls were called in favor of the Pistons is outright silly. Especially in Game 5. There were some downright BULLSHIT calls made against Detroit in that game. Putting Lindsay Hunter up against Wade is what shut him down in the fourth quarter, not his ribs. The better team won for sure. I just hope they can step it up to play the Spurs.

The thing that drives me nuts is we have a 7'0" 245 lbs. piece of Darko Milishit that never leaves the bench. We wasted a pick on him when we could have picked up Wade or Carmelo Anthony.

Sam Bowie, anybody?

What's a worse pick? Bowie or Darko? Bowie (at the very least) was servicable ... Darko isn't ... but, Jordan is way better than 'Melo or Wade. I dunno, its a tough call.

There were a bunch of calls that were really touchy calls, and then they would blatantly ignore others (including some on blocks by Miami).

Hunter did play quite well on D. My point I guess is that in the first quarter it definitely affected Wade's productivity, and IMO led to some uncharacteristic layups down the stretch in the 4th.

Detroit is a solid team. Not sure what they were doing earlier in the NBA season, but they're definitely clicking now.

did anyone else frown and scratch their head trying to decipher this post?

The Pistons shut down Wade in the past, so there's no reason to be believe that they couldn't do it again. As for the foul calls and overall lack basketball rules enforcement that goes on in the NBA. Where have you been for the past decade? There has been so much inconsistency in that department, that complaining about the refs is just a moot point. Both teams get hosed on a regular basis. If Wade would've quit whining long enough to suck it up and play, then the Heat may have come out on top.

agreed foul calls are not worth arguing about, tho it never seems to stop me right after it happens...

I just get ticked when people play like girls like rip/reggie... or when certain calls are quite inconsistent and unneeded down the stretch (like the 3 steps on the guy in the NCAA tourney)...
