Houston Rockets (2x NBA Champions)

There's even more irrefutable evidence that "would've" doesn't matter.

Houston won. Case closed.
My contention is that those Rockets teams (which were vastly different from 94 to 95, BTW) would have beaten one of the championship Bulls teams. Say, the 93 team that beat Phoenix. Hakeem was just as clutch as MJ ever was for those couple of years, but I think a lot of the young ones missed it back then. If you're too young to remember what happened real well, that's cool. No shame....Big Money Rob and the Alien coming off the bench....They were nice.

"i watch these old NBA games on classic and think "god i almost forgot how good he was. hopefully the rest of the world hasn't." sadly....im wrong."

No one's forgotten how great Jordan was. Its just an irresponsible remark to say the Bulls would've won the Titles because its complete speculation, and its taking away from the greatest accomplishment of the 2nd best player in the 90's, Hakeem Olajuwon. Hell, even Bill Russell, the greatest Champion in the history of the sport, lost twice.

The '94 Bulls would've had a good shot to win it with Jordan. They almost made it anyway with Pippen's MVP caliber regular season (22.04-8.74-5.60), and probably should've went to the Finals if not for Hue Hollins. But lets be serious: that team had flaws: Bill Cartwright was at the end. It was his last season with Chicago and he only played 42 games. Kukoc had yet to come into his own, and John Paxson only played 27 games & retired at the end of the season. Both Cartwright & Paxson started on all three of the Bulls 1st 3 Championship teams & were big-time contributors. Remember, they finished in 2nd place to the Hawks that season.

The '95 Bulls were an even bigger mess: they lost Horace Grant to Orlando, added Ron Harper (who did nothing for them), traded for Luc Longley mid-season, and Will Perdue was the starting Center. They only won 47 games and finished 3rd. They had nothing inside to contain Shaq or Olajuwon, even with an in-shape Jordan on the team.

The '96 Bulls added Jordan, Rodman, and Luc Longley & Kukoc came into their own. It was a different team than the previous two seasons.

Nice to see Pip's '94 season get some recognition. He was the second best player in the league that season. But the bad call from Hue Hollins didn't prevent the Bulls from beating the Knicks. If you get a chance to see that play again, the missed shot bounced fairly softly off the rim and the backboard. Patrick Ewing was directly in front of the basket, and easily would have gotten a tip/dunk with about 1 second to play, but he didn't jump because of the whistle. I've never seen this pointed out by anybody, but Hue's pathetic call on Pippen's late touch on the shooter's follow-through didn't cost the Bulls that series.

And I hate the Knicks and was a Bulls fan even before Portland drafted Sam Bowie in between Olajuwan and MJ.

I'd rather focus on all of the tall studs that lost to tiny little spud webb in the dunk contest :)
'Nique got jobbed against Spud...but not as bad as he got screwed against MJ.

Nike won that Dunk Championship...

Ewing's had a history of blowing gimme lay-ups & dunks in critical Playoff games. I wouldn't take that putback as a given if I were you.

"But the bad call from Hue Hollins didn't prevent the Bulls from beating the Knicks."

Its amazing how either Hollins, Bennet Salvadore, or "Knick" Bevetta were the refs for all of the Bricks Playoff games that season. Consipiracy theory anyone? A little "Magic" Bullet, errrrrr, "Orlando Magic" Lottery Ball, anyone?

"And I hate the Knicks and was a Bulls fan even before Portland drafted Sam Bowie in between Olajuwan and MJ."

The worst draft pick of all time.

BN27: "scottie pippen in his prime was better than kobe in his."

Agreed. Although this is impossible to debate, as well.

I still think Darko Milishit at least must be a tie for the worst draft pick of all time. He even sucks when he comes in for mop up duty.

Don't get me wrong. Darko was a horrible, horrible pick. But its not as bad as Bowie over Jordan.

Forgetting about the fact that Jordan is the greatest player of all time (lets put that aside for a second), that single draft pick elevated the Bulls from one of the irrelevant teams in the NBA to one of the four most prominent (along with the Bricks, Fakers, & Celtics). Not only that, but it heaped billions, and billions of dollars in revenue streams into the franchise, sucked in every bandwagon fan in the universe, and made them the most popular team (like rock stars) in the world. Drafting Jordan was more than just a basketball move. It was a business move.

And if you look at it, yes, Bowie was not as bad as Darko is. Injuries aside, Bowie could've been a steady, productive, starting Center (not an All-Star) for about 10 years. BUT, by that same token, 'Melo & Wade aren't as good as Jordan was. So, yes, you're getting a better player in Bowie, but passing down players who aren't as good as MJ in those two. Am I making sense here??

By the way, speaking of bad Portland Draft Picks, can someone tell me what these players have in common?
1. Mychal Thompson, Portland Trailblazers
2. Phil Ford, Kansas City Kings
3. Rick Robey, Indiana Pacers
4. Michael Ray Richardson, New York Knicks
5. Purvis Short, Golden State Warriors

ANSWER: All 5 were selected above the 6th pick of the 1978 NBA Draft, Larry Joe Bird.

My favorite NBA Trivia question: in the 1978 NBA Draft, the Boston Celtics had the 6th and 8th picks. Other than Larry Bird at 6, who did they draft at # 8?

ANSWER: Freeman Williams, Portland State (never played a single game for the Celtics)

For those not aware of the timing, Boston drafted Bird before he played his last year of college ball at Indiana St, which was a very shrewd move by Red Auerbach (whom I despise). Then in the 1980 draft they had the number 1 pick; they traded that #1 pick to Golden State (Joe Barry Carroll) for Robert Parish and Kevin McHale. So they got a Hall-of-Fame front line out of a #6 and a #1 pick two years apart.

Darko is 20, can't speak English, can't get minutes on a championship team, and is coached by "The Young-Player Hater." Give the guy a couple more years, maybe he blossoms into a Kukoc? Give him a chance. I'd take him in a trade right now if Detroit acted like he was Chinese trinkets.

bb73: Auerbach got the 1980 # 1 pick through a trade with the Pistons and then coach, Dick Vitale. That's why he always jokes in his broadcasts that he, "built the Celtics."

Auerbach (a couple years later) also traded Gerald Henderson to the Sonics for their first round pick the next season. The Sonics tanked, the pick ended up being # 2, and the Celtics selected ... Len Bias.

HabaneroBuck: Another thing about Darko is this: the Pistons won the Championship last year! Who cares how bad this guy is? Detroit has Prince & Billups in Wade & 'Melo's would-be spots anyway. I'd trade a blown draft pick for a Championship anyday of the week. Complaining about Darko now is just plain greedy.

That's like me saying, oh yeah, my Yankees won all these Championships, but think what they would've been if Brien Taylor would've made it too!
