Game Thread Illinois 28, Ohio State 21 (final)

Is it one lost challenge per game, or per half?

Does anyone know if any of our coaches have access to the TV broadcast of the game to help inform these types of decisions? I know that either Bollman or Heacock is our eye in the sky, and I wonder if those folks can see the play/replays on TV.

Tressel was asked in his post-game presser (shown "live" on ESPN News) about it and he said that they don't have monitors in the booth

AND

Tressel called timeout on the punt play because he said there were '12-13 guys on the field"

1)Yes, it wasnt reviewable.. it was just a horrible on field call by the official..

2)Jim Heacock spit the bit yet again in a game against a team with comparable athletes.. Just a horrific gameplan.. Seemed like we blitzed the same guys in the same areas nearly every down.. and we ran ourselves out of the 3rd and long plays.. how we allowed so many running lanes for Juice on those plays is beyond me.. Also the three man rush allowed Olinemen to get to the second level and take out the LBs and safeties..

3)Laurinaitis and Freeman = blown tackles, trouble in traffic, no impact today. they didnt rise up

4)DTs did nothing.. couldnt even hold the LOS..

5) Serious question about our ability to defend teams with athletes.. we just looked slow and a step late all game on the defense side of the ball

6) Worst turnover of the game was that last one by Boeckman.. he just reeled off a long run.. crowd was into it and we were moving the ball... I was hoping we would hit Beanie for a couple runs.. but instead Boeckman goes deep into double coverage..

7) Boeckman was very erratic today.. better throws to Ballard and NIcol and we're looking at a couple more TDs

8) Still cant believe we cant find ways to get Small or Saine involved

That nearly made me punch a whole in the wall.

As did the constant QB draws that nobody seemed to see coming except the audience.

LOL.

I guess a lot stays the same from season to season too, right? :wink2:

Again, here's the point I made in the Barksdale/DT recruiting thread:

More bodies at DT please! And please don't tell me how great our walk-on DTs are or how we will convert Rose to DT in the offseason.

blah2.gif

1. Does it really make you feel better trying to prove you're right about knowing we would have problems?
2. I hope you never make mistakes.
3. No, a lot doesn't stay the same season to season. Welcome to the '07-'08 season, you know, where teams like Stanford and Appalachian St. beat teams like USC and scUM.
4. I don't remember saying our DT's would be great in the first place so why you brought that up I have no idea. You're starting to slant things.
5. Who the fuck cares at this point? We just lost on senior day and our NC dreams are gone.

If it really does make you feel better, I admit you know so much more than me. I feel like shit anyway.

INT in the red zone --> takes at least 3 points off of the board for OSU and gives ILL the ball back on the 20 when they are throwing it around like its a 7-on-7 scrimmage

Excellent analysis.

Bottom line, Illinois made more plays than Ohio State.

What was with all the 3 man defensive line sets today? every time we came with that we got burned by the run

I believe this was due to protecting the threat of Mendenhall, but Zook used this to their advantage by opening up Dufrene for the run and Williams for the pass. This was obvious in the first half, and should have been adjusted in the second. I was surprised to see the same sets in the third quarter after what happened in the first half---and the fourth quarter---I have no answers for that mess.

All in all I'd say this still isn't in the same league as '98 MSU. That was a Buckeye team that was far and away the best team talent wise in the country and was rolling. This was a team that has, lets be honest, been playing way above expectations. Before the season, I said we'd start 8-0, then probably drop 1 or 2 to either Wiscy or scUM. Turns out we got to 10-0 instead before falling. I still think we'll win next week and get to the Rose Bowl, which would be great. It's been too long. I just hope we don't have to play Oregon.

I'd say both were an equal kick in the nuts.

The 2nd TO unsheathed the blade, the third one stuck it in. Of course if our defense really was the best in the country, neither one are the crushers they ended up being.

Oh My GOOOODDDD - We Suxed Soo Bad Today...

The Illini did not beat us - we never came to play. I don't think I have ever seen a slower, more bumbling, stumbling performance this year than how we played. It was beyond painful....ugh. Who really gives a @#$& about the Rose Bowl. We had a chance at the NC and completely blew it - big time. What a disappointment - to be so close and just give it away. I'm not sure I can get over this one. If it were a hard fought, tough, well played game, then maybe, but we layed down and gave it away...ugh - I'm getting sick, sick sick... :sick1: :grr:

This game basically confirmed to the nation that the complete lack of respect for our #1 ranking was legitimate and that we were indeed over-ranked. Not only that, we will never be able erase the stain of that horrible NC loss last year. This truly IS the worse kind of loss a team can have.

Heacock blew a lot on that game. I don't think I saw us spying Juice very much, and why we stayed in nickel almost the entire game knowing damn well they weren't going to pass every down, I don't know. Chekwa got picked on, especially in the first half. We really could have used Jenkins there.

We got out played, but at the same time, there was a lot of blown coverage, bad plays, and messed up calls.
