Is it time to be over ESPN?

I watch ESPN to see games and highlights. I could care less about what their dumbass announcers say on the air about the Bucks. In general, television news/broadcasting is a joke-I don't watch Fox or CNN, I get my news off the AP wire via Yahoo. I obsess far more over Tressel's recruiting strategies or offensive play calling far more than what some ESPN scmuck said about OSU. That said, I do think ESPN realized that if it wanted to be seen as a "journalistic source", w/ serious credibility, they needed to walk away from the whole Clarett mess very quietly.
As a counterpoint, did anyone see REAL Sports investigation of the Savovic/Obie/Salyers mess- I thought they were very evenhanded about the process.

If the outrage directed at ESPN by Buckeye fans over the last year or so has been partially responsible for them trying to be more balanced in their coverage, or more positive toward tOSU, why should we stop?

That's just what they want us to do. Screw 'em. Keep watching them like the sneaky bastards they are, and raise Hell with that ombudsman they appointed a while back when they're out of line. This is still me.
:pissed:

And only because this was from 'grammar nazi' vrb:

I'm not particularly enamored with ESPN, but then (much like BSinGA says above), the media as a whole is pretty slimy.

The media as a whole ARE pretty slimy. :wink2:

Fuck ESPN, they werent just reporting they drug our name through the mud, and cost a good man his job. I will still watch their dumbass station as long as i dotn have a ratings box on my tv, i wont go to their site and i wont buy anything from them.. at least until i hear an apology, but i dont expect one.
I am not going to curse their name every time its uttered, but i am certainly not going to say all is forgiven and be their friends now. They can go to hell, and yes. I do want to see Herbie sing Carmen Ohio from the outhouse.

No. It's not time to get over ESPN. They have exposed themselves as nothing more than an entertainment channel with no substance (as someone else put it "on par with Jerry Springer") and should be treated as such. If we continue to support their program then they are telling the truth when they say, "it's what the public wants to hear".

If I was the AD I wouldn't have even let them on campus for the ESPN game... let alone allowing them to publicly mock us. These guys basically cost Andy Geiger his career. Compare whatever ESPN has done for us with what Andy has done for us... I'm staying loyal to Andy on that one.

I've gained some perspective on sports over the last few years. I tune in and watch the games and I read about our games here and other games on CNNSI. I don't listen to a bunch of grown men who couldn't cut it in their respective sports criticise college kids and tear coaches apart out of envy.... I have better uses of my time and money.

I still feel that the message board fanatics took this ESPN thing far too seriously. I've said my peace about this in numerous other threads, so Steve19 and I will just have to agree to disagree. But a few points that have come up that I will address (again if necessary):

1. Trev never had a grudge against Ohio State. I know a lot of Buckeye fans were upset with his touting Iowa and Brad Banks through the 2002 season, but I can guarantee that Trev was not anti-Ohio State, at least not until he realized that saying something about Ohio State was a lock to get his name on a bunch of GameDay signs. Don't like what these talking heads have to say? Don't encourage them. Trev wrote a glowing review of Ohio State following the '03 Fiesta Bowl. Heck, he was actually driving the bandwagon in 1998 while he was at CBS Sports because he thought the BCS was a disgrace to keep the Buckeyes out of the national title game. Trev never had any issues with Ohio State.

2. Tom Friend was played by Maurice Clarett and wound up with egg on his face. Clarett used Gene Wojciechowski to get himself some ink and Geno learned the hard way to run as far away from Clarett as possible when he comes knocking. Friend found himself in the same boat with nobody to blame once Shanahan bounced Clarett out of Denver. Every reporter believes what Clarett has to say because Clarett will let anyone with a mic or a camera into his inner circle. If you're a reporter for an entertainment network, how can you not interview Maurice Clarett when he's hangin' with Jim Brown? All you need beyond those two is to ask Charles Barkley an opinion about Clarett and you've got enough material for SportsCenter, Outside the Lines, The Sports Reporters, and PTI for the next two weeks!

3. I'm not certain what recruits we've lost because of the Clarett accusations. Bemoll was never coming to Ohio State. He used the excuse of the Clarett story because it was easier than admitting that he was whipped and his girlfriend didn't want him to move so far away.

Everything else is wonderful message board banter. The post-Alamo Bowl coverage was awful as was Mark Jones talking about the football team throughout the entirety of the OSU v. Clemson men's basketball game, but the three things I mentioned above are facts and are not disputable.

Be careful that you don't link one to another. Desmond Howard and Nick Lechay singing Hail to the Victors proves that they're douchebags, but that is hardly evidence of a conspiracy.

As I read this thread, ESPN is showing a "Simulated Press Conference" for the LA Dodgers.

What. the. fuck?

This is the reason I dislike ESPN. Not because they attacked OSU.....because they suck as a sports channel. Who the hell cares about a simulated press conference? Who needs to hear TO's minute by minute schedule? I want to watch sports highlights......I don't want a 24 hour watch on Barry Bonds.

Why should I be "over" ESPN when they haven't stopped sucking ass as a sports channel?

I don't need a conspiracy Dryden....but I also don't need someone taking cheap shots. If you have a friend that continues to badmouth you and betray you, you end the friendship.

ESPN has encouraged rumors, allowed for a man like Andy Geiger to be ambushed at the Alamo Bowl, allowed May and Alberts to call for Geiger's resignation over allegations, and then allowed some has-been pop idol who is known as JSimpson's husband to desecrate something fans hold very close to the heart.

If you don't take offense to that, as you said, we can agree to disagree. However, although there may not be a conspiracy, there has been an awful lot of poor taste coming out of that network.

Great points. I agree that labeling it as a conspiracy may be a bit strong, but letting Howard and Lachey sing the scUM fight song on the Shoe was solely meant to irritate Buckeye Nation; as such, it was reprehensible.

Don't misunderstand, I do take offense to that. I don't disagree at all with anything you've just written. I am simply saying that some people, whether they're commentators, announcers, reporters, television producers, or talk show guests don't do their jobs very well. Some are downright horrible.

Just don't confuse one for another. A lot of people are looking for an angle that simply isn't there because the story is too personal and that sentiment has clouded their objectivity.

You and I both know that we all would feel a whole lot differently if this were Tennessee or Florida State or, well ... anyone else.

I don't hate ESPN. We all know what they are now. VLMarti has called them out and and they cowered.

They are the sports world's "Access Hollywood", only 24/7. Sensationalism is their goal, not just an occurance.

That said, if they continue on the path they are on, they may be able earn some of our respect back. Most of the anchors and announcers recognize that we weathered the storm and came out squeaky clean for all intents and purposes.

They haven't been hammering the basketball situation at all. They know something happened there and they don't even mention it. That says something to me right there.

I'm willing to let bygones be bygones. I won't be shopping from their site or supporting the companies that advertise with them. But I will watch Gameday and games that are televised on their channels, as long as I don't have (as someone else mentioned) a Neilson box.

I'll feign forgiveness, but I don't intend to forget.
