Is it time to be over ESPN?

Don't misunderstand, I do take offense to that. I don't disagree at all with anything you've just written. I am simply saying that some people, whether they're commentators, announcers, reporters, television producers, or talk show guests don't do their jobs very well. Some are downright horrible.

Just don't confuse one for another. A lot of people are looking for an angle that simply isn't there because the story is too personal and that sentiment has clouded their objectivity.

You and I both know that we all would feel a whole lot differently if this were Tennessee or Florida State or, well ... anyone else.

Just to give Dryden a little support here, we have shared PMs over the last year and his position is much more balanced than it looked like it was in the first message. He and I agree on lots of things about ESPiN.

Great points. I agree that labeling it as a conspiracy may be a bit strong, but letting Howard and Lachey sing the scUM fight song on the Shoe was solely meant to irritate Buckeye Nation; as such, it was reprehensible.
I don't think it was meant to irritate Buckeye Nation, it was meant to say "fuck yourselves in the ass, hand or wherever you please". Can anyone recall anything remotely close to this being done at any other school ever by ESPN?

Perhaps in an unrelated matter, perhaps not, Trev Alberts began to feel less appreciated at ESPN. This culminated in the firing of one of the announcers who besmirched Ohio State at every opportunity and attacked the team, its adminstrators and its coaches in such a disgusting manner during the Alamo Bowl this year.

Actually, Alberts gave me the impression he was drinking the Buckeye Kool-aid before the season.

Mark May, the other announcer, seems far more balanced in his comments.
:slappy:

During this football season, ESPN has telecast almost every Ohio State game on GamePlan, perhaps more than any other team, and have done things that seem intended to build revenues and brand strength for Ohio State.

No. No. No.
The televise our games for $$$$$$. Not to build us up. As one of the largest if not the largest alumni/fan bases across the country, if they show more tOSU games, more subscribers to GamePlan.

All in all, I didnt like ESPN but i still would watch sportscenter and pti when i could. However, after the Lagay/Howard bullshit I havnt wacthed pti once and sportscenter less than 5 times, never once more than a 1/2 hour. I did get gameplan (for a day) at the halftime of usc and asu to wacth that game, havnt wacthed it since. I dont care if they talk us up during other games or our games, I dont give a shit if Mark May gets fired, I dont fucking care. Im with YSUBUCK... FUCK ESPN

Exactly BN27 and scooter. They are above the law, and even above providing america with sports content. They make up simulated press conferences, ruin a HS team's season with a tool like Butkus, and promote a loudmouth idiot Stephen A Smith while firing their best analyst Aldridge.

It doesn't matter if there is a conspiracy or not. They do whatever they want regardless of the consequences, and make no apologies for it afterwards.

Tom Friend didn't get played by clarett. He soiled himself with glee when Clarett gave him those allegations. This is the same reporter who told us it wasn't Clarett's fault that he failed at the NFL combine.

There was a time when ESPN was great, and promoted all venues of sports, helping them immensely. Sportscenter was witty (ie Kenny Wayne), and contained primarily sports highlights. Now sportscenter has dumb jokes (which involve uncontrollable giggling by the other anchor every time one is told), spends far too much time on fluff, and b/c they have a magazine they suddenly have the right to declare widesweeping judgment on a number of situations. I won't even get into their eoe lineup.

Remember, I tried to set us out on a discussion and to fairly represent views some BP'ers hold. Also, Mili didn't say we should get over ESPN, but rather that maybe its time we started to get over them. Big difference.

So, the first post does not represent my point of view but rather a set of point of views in order to set out a balanced conversation. For instance, I despise him but BP'ers have repeatedly said that they think Mark May is coming around since Trev left.

If ESPiN show our games, we get licensing/programming revenue. So, they and Ohio State make money. It also gets our brand out there for recruits.

On a personal level, I remain very disappointed about what they did in the Texas game. They literally told us that they didn't care what the Buckeye Nation thought. I still feel very badly for Geiger, for VLMarti, for every player and official they hurt.

But, the truth is that you keep your friends close and your enemies closer and they are the gorilla in the sports media world.

So, the question really isn't "what would you like to do" but rather "what do we feel we should do in the interest of Ohio State". Ohio State always should come first.:osu:

I'll be honest, as much as I agree that ESPN was on the witch hunt, I never stopped watching. Why? Becuase Sports are better than the other 185,000 channels of crap I have. I'm not giving up Thursday night football because Mark May is a yutz. I'm not giving up Sunday night baseball because Trev Alberts picked Iowa over Ohio State some week. I just never really got pissed at ESPN. I think they fucked up. I think they're too big for their britches. I think Tommy Tuberville's rant was actually on the money. I still like sports too much. I don't vist their web page much, if I do it's because I'm looking for quick stats to make a post, and they happen to be the top of the google list.

Fuck ESPN for all I care, just don't get rid of my sports programming. That is, if TBS started carrying Thursday FB, I'd watch TBS.

ESPN is doing exactly what every other media source is doing, stretching truths so far they are almost lies. The reason we are all so pissed off at them is because of how close to home they have been hitting the past couple years. I see no difference between them and say the New York Times or CBS. Media will do anything to get ratings and unfortunately honesty is not the best seller these days.

If the alternative to ESPN is to get my sports news from CBS, TBS or FOX ... :sad2:

Good point, GD.. I should mention, I don't watch ESPN for anything other than live sports programming or scores and updates. Outside the lines? Don't care. Baseball tonight, I'll watch.

If some two bit news hack is up there on the tube pontificating or editorializing, I switch to something else, I guess is what I'm saying.

ESPN showed me that they wanted to make the news, not just report it, during the MC stuff. They seem to be looking out for #1, and if someone gives them bad press, that person is on ESPN's "shit list." Tommy Auburn has bad-mouthed ESPN at least twice, and both times I've heard nothing but "He's just a big baby" from ESPN. (Which I have to admit that I agree with that, a little.) They report stories about the big-name player from the recent national champions (2002 Buckeyes), making HUGE news, and when it turns out to be wrong, it's obviously Ohio State's fault. (The news media is never responsible for anything, are they?) The fact that Ohio State has never been found guilty of anything other than what they, themselves, reported, doesn't seem to bother ESPN. Facts just get in the way of their story, and that story (a make-believe story) has fans across the country believing it, sometimes more often than they believe Michael Moore's "documentaries" are true.

I thought I was going to forgive ESPN, as simply not watching them was not an option. (Like many of you, I can't just not watch sports.) But then they do possibly the most disrespectful thing possible on national television - they sing the fucking fight song at the top of Ohio Stadium, claiming that it's "the greatest fight song in the country." That, of course, is debatable. But even if you feel that way, why sing it that week, in that stadium? Notre Dame was going to Michigan the next week - why not sing it in Michigan Stadium, if GameDay was going there? Or why not ANYWHERE else, ANYTIME else?

Why don't you just kick my dog and then ask me to be friends?
