Ok, ok...foot in mouth.

Can I just tell you what a pleasure it was to check out a comprehensive college football website WITH ABSOLUTELY NO MENTION OF NOTRE DAME !!!!

Well..........I think it's safe to say..........

I wouldn't say that Chad Henne is really that much better than Booty. If anything, I would probably say that the two of them are almost equal. But the real mistake is judging Manningham to be equal to Jarrett. Jarrett is by far better than Manningham, and is probably the best receiver in the country aside from maybe Calvin Johnson.

First of all, I am not trying to take anything away from Jarrett. He has definitely proven himself throughout his college career and he no doubt appears to be NFL ready where Manningham still has a ways to go in college.

Secondly, I almost let this go because I typically don't have any problem with a fellow buckeye fan stating that a given scUM player isn't all that great.

The thing is, I'm not so sure that your statement above which I've highlighted in bold is actually true. I'm not so sure that Dwayne Jarrett is by far better than Mario Manningham, atleast a 100% healthy MM. Just one opinion vs another and I know that opinions are like assholes.

What do we have to go on here? Stats? I know stats don't always tell the whole story but since we are on the subject what do the statistics say. If you take a look you will see that, atleast statistically, Mario Manningham's numbers compare quite favorably with Dwayne Jarrett's numbers for this current season.

DJ- 55 catches 742 yards 10 TD's in 10 games played.

MM- 32 catches 624 yards 9 TD's in 8 games played.

Factoring in that MM has played fewer games and arguably wasn't the same after coming back from the injury, is it really that farfetched to say that the two are approximately equal caliber weapons? Also remember that MM plays on a team with an established tailback that might cause MM to get fewer passes his way because scUM doesn't need to throw it as much as USC might need to.

The original poster (I think it was scarletngrey) even said that Jarrett might have had a slight edge, which I think is fair to say, but your statement that Jarrett is by far better seems hokey.

What else can we go on to compare? Common opponents maybe. Hey what luck scUM and SC have a common opponent this year. Notre Dame of course. Let's compare what MM and DJ did this season in their respective games vs. ND.

Wow, what do you know. The stat lines look pretty similar.

DJ- 7 catches 132 yds 3 TD's

MM- 4 catches 137 yds 3 TD's

Also it's interesting to note that both Jarrett and Manningham had their best game of the year statistically when they were on the field vs. Notre Dame. Hmmmm.... I wonder what that says about Notre Dame?

I would have to disagree with your disagreement regarding what was posted previously by a third party. Can you follow that?:wink2:

If you are gonna try to say that Booty is equal or almost equal to Henne, then why can't someone else say that Manningham is equal or almost equal to Jarrett? They seem approximately even in what they are both capable of doing to an opponent on the football field all things being equal (ie both are healthy) Prior to the injury, Manningham was absolutely torching people.

You could argue that, against the Buckeyes, Manningham may not have been 100% therefore Jarrett may pose as a bigger problem for tOSU to deal with in the title game. I'll give you that. But just coming out and saying that some other poster is wrong and Jarrett is by far better than Manningham and not backing it up with something, that doesn't fly atleast not with me.

Also to be completely fair to Jarrett, his potency may have been diminished this season due to playing with an inexperienced QB. But since you think Booty is equal to Henne, I guess that doesn't matter much.

In closing: scUM sucks, Manningham is 0-2 vs. tOSU, and Jarrett and USC better get ready to lose their second straight title game (if they get by UCLA)!

Go Buckeyes!!!!

USC has had some big wins, Arkansas and Nebraska. That being said, ND moved the ball on them early but couldn't convert on 4th down, and couldn't take advantage of two huge interceptions that gave them great field position. USC's DB's are better and more physical, TSUN's d-line is better.

I think it will be similar to the game against the Wolverines. By what I've seen I'd say OSU by 10-14, but USC has much better coaching than TSUN and they come to play in big games. Something like 37-31 feels about right to me.

Something that looked odd to me in the sagarin rankings was the pac-10 strength of schedule...All Pac-10 teams are in the top 11 in SoS nationally, is that really accurate?
USC 3
Cal 2
fauxSU 11
Oregon 6
UCLA 7
ASU 9
Arizona 4
Stanford 1
Washington 5
WSU 8
I can see USC, but who did Stanford play OOC to get the #1 SoS? Navy, ND, SJSU...uh, sure. Well, fauxSU is the weakest at 11, who did they play? Eastern Washington (I-AA), Boise St, Idaho, and hawaii is coming up this weekend. For comparison, Florida has the 27th ranked schedule.

As this season has had more than its share of upsets and the B(C)S has proven to not be the most reliable system ever created, I am not even going to pretend to "know" that we will be playing USC come January 8. I mentioned earlier that I expect that this matchup would be more Tresselball than the scUM game and the more I think about it, the more I am convinced.

It is actually for a very simple reason. One of USC's greatest strengths is its team speed. OSU also has great team speed, but has played in a very physical conference. scUM's trademark this year was thier physical play. Tressel chose to fight scUM's physical D with our team speed. I think he will do the opposite with USC. I think Tressel will be more likely to slow the Trojans down.

What Tressel does as well as any coach is to get the other team to play our game. OSU's game generally is wearing the opponent down physically, and taking advantage of opponent mistakes to make the big play. USC is a big play offense. scUM is more of a grind-it-out offense. I think Tressel would rather win the battle with USC in the trenches than on the track.

Stanford has the toughest schedule in the Pac-10 because they have to play everyone in the Pac-10 except themselves. :wink2:

I would venture a guess that the same thing would happen with the Big-10 if they did not use the rotating schedule and every team played all of the other 10 teams. Purdue's SOS would be off the charts with OOC opponents Notre Dame and Hawaii, plus having Michigan, Ohio State, Wisconsin and Penn State on their conference slate.

Buckeyes to begin preparing for title-game foe
Wednesday, November 29, 2006
By Todd Porter REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

BCS SELECTION SHOW Bids to the five BCS bowls will be announced
Sunday, 8 p.m.
TV Channel 8

IT LOOKS LIKE USC ... Ohio State will play Southern Cal in the Tostitos BCS National Championship game on Jan. 8 ? provided the Trojans beat 13 1/2-point underdog UCLA on Saturday.
BUT IF USC STUMBLES ... Buckeyes would get a rematch with Michigan ... or play Florida, if the Gators impress in SEC title game.

COLUMBUS It's been nearly two weeks since anyone on the Ohio State football team picked up a ball, strapped on a pad and assembled as a team. That will end Friday when Head Coach Jim Tressel brings players together for the first time since beating Michigan.
The Buckeyes are in a 51-day layoff between the Michigan win and the national title game on Jan. 8. It isn't something that concerns Tressel.
"People asked at the beginning of the year if you're worried about the 12 (straight) games. If you worry about it, I'm not sure what good that does," Tressel said.
"You've got to make sure you coach it the right way because it is a battle emotionally and physically. You have to use the right doses of time off, the right doses of rehab, the right doses of game planning and the right doses of kids getting work."
The Buckeyes are expected to have a minicamp-like practice starting Friday. A year ago, Tressel used some of the bowl practice time to get young players experience.
It paid off this year.
"Paul Haynes (safeties coach) and Tim Boeckman (cornerbacks) felt last year's bowl practice really made a huge impact on guys like Anderson Russell, Donald Washington, Andre Amos ... guys like that now have to contribute," Tressel said. "The way I look at it is, it's more days of practice for young kids."
Players have final exams starting next week. Tressel watched the USC-Notre Dame game and likely will see USC's game Saturday against UCLA. A Southern Cal win means the Buckeyes will play USC in the Tostitos BCS National Championship game in Glendale, Ariz.
"They've got final exams, then we'll begin getting ready for our final exam," Tressel said.
The Buckeyes and Trojans haven't played since 1990. The programs have met 21 times with USC winning 11. There was one tie. In other words, this year's bowl game could be a classic Rose Bowl rematch, only played in the desert.
Tressel could become the first head coach to win two BCS national titles. The Buckeyes won the 2002 national title, but there are not similarities to this team.
"This is different in a lot of ways," Tressel said. "2002 was a group of guys who came to Ohio State to do extraordinary things. For the first three years ... we hadn't done extraordinary things. They were really committed to doing something special. ... We survived, then all of a sudden we were pretty good.
"This year ... if we progress the next 40-some days, maybe the goals they have in mind we'll have a chance to reach."

EARLY LINE
Folks in Las Vegas aren't waiting for the bowl game matchup to be announced Sunday. Ohio State is a 5-point favorite against USC in the national title game.

Trojans take winning lightly
Posted by the Asbury Park Press on 11/29/06

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
LOS ANGELES ? Center Ryan Kalil, one of the few seniors on the Southern California roster who plays on a regular basis, smiled when the question was posed:
Have the Trojans accomplished enough in the past five years to be considered a dynasty?
"I would call it fun," Kalil replied Tuesday. "I know we've won a lot of games, been in championship games over the years and we might be in another one.
"Having fun is the most important thing. The way Pete Carroll coaches, we could be 12-0 and if it wasn't fun, that wouldn't be enough. It's a fun thing, especially at the college level. I'll never have a chance to play for a team like this again."
Carroll's teams are 55-3 since the middle of the 2002 season ? his second as the Trojans' coach. The three losses have been by a total of eight points, with the most recent a 33-31 setback at Oregon State on Oct. 28.
USC (10-1, 7-1 Pac-10) has won four straight since then, outscoring the opposition 144-43. That combined with a series of upsets to other contending teams put the second-ranked Trojans in position to play in their third straight Bowl Championship Series title game should they beat crosstown rival UCLA (6-5, 4-4) on Saturday.
Such a scenario seemed unlikely last spring, when 19 USC players worked out for around 100 NFL representatives, with those in attendance marveling at the talent leaving school.
And it seemed even more unlikely after the loss at Oregon State.
But Carroll said at the time anything could happen, and he was right ? should the Trojans beat the Bruins for the eighth straight time, they'll almost surely play No. 1 Ohio State on Jan. 8 in Glendale, Ariz.
Among the offensive players to leave after last season were quarterback Matt Leinart, tailbacks Reggie Bush and LenDale White, offensive linemen Winston Justice, Deuce Lutui and Fred Matua, and tight end Dominique Byrd.
"We weren't expecting something like that," wide receiver Chris McFoy admitted.
"We knew people were going to look down on us because we lost so much talent," tight end Fred Davis said. "We have the athletes to do it. We have the No. 1 recruiting class every year."
Carroll said it was clear following the recruiting season last winter that the Trojans would have enough talent and depth to be successful, despite the lack of star power and experience.
"That doesn't mean you can't play to the same level," he said. "You do it differently. We were very hopeful we could have a very good team if we could survive the first few games."

Here's an interesting nugget:

Stassen considers all of OSU's Rose Bowl games against the Trojans to be away (not neutral) games.

LINK

EDIT:

Nugget II:

OSU hasn't always played warm weather teams in September. On 6 occasions Ohio State has hosted SoCal in the month of October. To be fair it should be revealed that the Trojans did blow the Buckeyes out in the 'Shoe on October 11th of the forgettable 2-6-1 campaign in 1947. But in the 5 seasons when the Buckeyes had a winning record, OSU outscored the Trojans 92-26, with the last 3 games being shut-outs. USC's lone win was on their first trip to the Horseshoe in 1938, a season when the Buckeyes were 4-3-1 and the Trojans finished 9-2.

Can we please have a play-off system in which the higher seeded team plays at home (in December)?
