Jim Boeheim (HC Syracuse Orange)

I don't. It was a dickish move by a guy who has a good deal of explaining to do, but the key point is that NO reporter worthy of the name is "loyal" to a school, a program, a team. His loyalty should be to telling the public what he believes to be the truth, to do his research and to ask tough questions.

And yeah, I like Herbie.

Really? You could write those two sentences one after the other. Without using the words "SEC" and "speed"?

Boeheim's Orange self-imposed a post-season ban for this season just this week. It has been a long time coming for Syracuse, they have been under the NCAA microscope for 3 years, even before they played OSU in 2012 there were reports of them playing ineligible players many times. I still think Boeheim would have been fired by now if he was the coach at a public university instead of being able to shield himself from the media at a private school. If I were the NCAA, I would not accept this "ban" as real punishment on the part of Syracuse as they A) already knew they had a mediocre team that wasn't going to do much to add to their tradition, B) the players spent all season working hard thinking they could go to the postseason only to get hit with this ban with a month to go in the season, C) the university probably hand-picked the time to announce the ban when the college media was preoccupied with football NLI day, they had literally 3 years to self-impose this postseason ban but waited until a month before the season was over, and the public would only have another month to talk about the ban as opposed to the whole season which most schools have to deal with, and D) the Syracuse senior(s) had no opportunity to explore other options for their last season where they could have gone somewhere else and played in the postseason without having to sit out a year due to transferring.

Over the course of a decade, Syracuse University did not control and monitor its athletics programs, and its head men’s basketball coach failed to monitor his program, according to a decision issued by a Division I Committee on Infractions panel.

Syracuse discovered and self-reported 10 violations in this case, which primarily involved men’s basketball but also football. The self-reported violations, dating back to 2001, include academic misconduct, extra benefits, the failure to follow its drug testing policy and impermissible booster activity. The other violations found included impermissible academic assistance and services, the head basketball coach’s failure to promote an atmosphere of compliance and monitor his staff, and the school’s lack of control over its athletics program.

Penalties in this case, not including those self-imposed by the school, include five years of probation; financial penalties; reduction of three men’s basketball scholarships per year for four years; vacation of wins in which ineligible students participated; a nine conference game suspension for the head basketball coach; and men’s basketball recruiting restrictions for two years. Additionally, the panel accepted the school’s one-year postseason ban in men’s basketball it self-imposed after the NCAA hearing, among other measures outlined in the public decision.
