Report: Jim Delany to retire as B1G commish in 2020

During his time at the podium during Big Ten Media Days Tuesday, commissioner Jim Delany hinted very strongly that he would not be around when the conference’s new media rights deal expires in 2022. In fact, the 68-year-old commish sounded fairly positive that he’ll be somewhere other than the league’s headquarters in Rosemont, Ill., when that deal comes up for negotiations.

“I have a lot of energy and a lot of interest in what’s going on in the college space today,” Delany said. “I will be around for a bit. Whether I’m around here for six years is probably a little bit beyond how I see it.”

A short time later, Nicole Auerbach of USA Today, citing a person with direct knowledge of the situation, reported that Delany will step down in 2020. Jut when in 2020 Delany would ceded control after more than three decades on the job isn’t clear.

not overly surprising unfortunately. or fortunately, depending on your point of view of course. i personally disagree with some of the things he has done and directions he has taken the conference. but, i have to say he has been one of the best, if not the best, conference commissioner during his tenure. im not old enough to be able to judge several of the names he would have competed with during that time frame. but just judging him to his current contemporaries... ain't one i would trade him for. especially when you factor in return on investment. for those of you who are not in the know on current commmish pay rates:

  • Pac-12 (Larry Scott) - $4.05 million
  • SEC (Mike Slive) - $3.6 million
  • ACC (John Swofford) - $2.7 million
  • Big Ten (Jim Delany) - $2.6 million
  • Big 12 (Bob Bowlsby) - $2.6 million
i had originally looked up this thread to argue that the dude clearly needed a raise. hopefully enough for him to afford to cut his eyebrow hair back some... now however, my suspicion is that isn't going to be needed so much...

gonna miss that crazy lookin man. hopefully only because the big 10 media days will have at least 1 fewer looks kinda crazy possibly homeless dudes wearing really expensive suites as a keynote speaker. rather than because we ended up with a clone of one of the other conferences current commissioners...

good luck with future endeavors mr delany. just a thought though... avoid "dressing down" should you decide to wander around... pretty much anywhere alone... people will think you are crazy and will commit you either to a mental institution or put you in a home...... cuz... you look crazy.. :p
