Jim Foster (Former Women's BBall Head Coach- Hall of Famer)

And to those of you who think that Matta might have recruiting problems. You might want to read a little of this:sad:
The early signing period, which begins today, could pass as quietly as vacation in a library for the Ohio State women?s basketball program.

The Buckeyes are known to have had four prominent high-school guards on official visits this fall, and three already have chosen to go elsewhere. The fourth ? Tyler Scaife of Hall High School in Little Rock, Ark. ? has reported on her Twitter account that she won?t announce her decision until Friday.

Scaife also is known to be considering Tennessee and Rutgers. Of the other three, Linnae Harper of Chicago chose Kentucky, Saniya Chong of Ossining, N.Y., picked Connecticut and Jordan Reynolds of Portland, Ore., opted for Tennessee.

OSU coach Jim Foster could not confirm any of the visits or the possibilities, per NCAA rules.

He did acknowledge that the Buckeyes had focused their recruiting on a select group of guards outside Ohio as possible replacements for graduating seniors Tayler Hill and Amber Stokes.

If there is one loser in the recent Big 10 expansion announcements it is Jim Foster. He was able to take advantage of a super-uncharacteristically horrific Big 10 during a run of conference championships. Think about what Penn State and Purdue used to be as programs and where they were during Foster's run. But now two very good women's programs have been added.

Look out, Jim. Now your yearly early exits from the NCAA won't be saved by winning a terrible conference.

In addition to not being able to win the conference championship so easy, he is going to have an even more difficult time with his recruiting ad that's not saying much especially this year with no signings and not very much on the horizon. It will be interesting to see how long he survives.

The local media is starting to question and that could spell problems for Foster.
Seven games into the Big Ten women?s basketball schedule, Ohio State woke up this morning in a tie for last place.

This development would be more shocking if Penn State?s 71-56 drubbing hadn?t been so expected, but the presence of Ohio State at the bottom of the standings still makes you rub your eyes and look again.

For players in what has been the preeminent Big Ten program during most of the past decade ? the Buckeyes won or shared the regular-season conference title every year from 2005 to 2010 ? the view from the bottom can be disorienting.

?You can?t go any lower than this,? senior guard Tayler Hill said in a funeral voice. ?You can only go higher. We can only go up from this point.?

The Buckeyes have endured some bumps during coach Jim Foster?s 11 seasons, most notably during the NCAA Tournament, but none has been as jarring as a 1-6 start in conference play.

Last place in the league is a place the Buckeyes have never had to go.

But Penn State?s victory dropped the Buckeyes into a tie with Wisconsin, and frankly, the Buckeyes? 37-28 lead at halftime was more surprising than the loss. Penn State?s 43-19 advantage in the second half was closer to what most predicted, even though the Nittany Lions hadn?t won in Columbus since 2004.

?Like Coach Foster said, we have to find a way to play 40 minutes,? Hill said. ?The game is 40 minutes, not 20 minutes. It?s just frustrating because we know we can play 40 minutes.?

It makes you wonder how the Buckeyes possibly could have landed in this miserable place. That they haven?t been able to recruit another Davenport and Lavender seems obvious, but injuries have compounded that. Losing sophomore forward Kalpana Beach to a knee injury was a blow; if she had played, she likely would have given the Buckeyes an offensive force down low they don?t have. And the loss of senior guard Amber Stokes to a sprained left knee on Jan. 6 ? she returned in an abbreviated appearance yesterday ? has clearly hurt.

But last?

Wouldn't be upset in the least if there was change of staffs.

Let's see, in ten years Foster has won six Big Ten titles and is finishing worse than 3rd for the first time since 2004. By all means, toss him under the bus and back over him a time or two. After all he just missed the NCAA for the first time in 10 years. And the fact that he has graduated nearly every kid who has ever played for him is just a side issue.

Just because we would like OSU to be a UConn or Tennessee doesn't mean it is a reasonable expectation.

He is 64. Unless he let's one of his coaches rape some kid in the showers let him go out on his own terms.

Best thing about Foster - all his girls graduate.

But you completely omit several key factors about Foster. First, the amount of top tier talent that leaves the state. Second, his winning streak he only come when the Big 10 has been a particularly dreadful conference in women's bball. Third, like Cooper, he has a low level outreach to hs programs in the state - that hurts us for the future too.

It's no coincidence that several big 10 programs are on the rise and all of the sudden OSU can't even make the NCAA tournament.

Foster has taken the program to the precipice, but he can't take them to the next level. He has righted the ship and shown what the program is capable of, but I doubt he can take the next step. Although with Gene at the helm, who knows if the next hire is a step in the right direction. So be careful what you wish for.

The program isn't going to ascend with Foster at the helm all of a sudden at his age. Gene making a hire is something that's going to have to happen sooner or later so you're not really taking a risk by Foster leaving. Might as well happen now.

That's what I'm getting at (trying to not make this a Gene Smith thread). But do you trust the man to make a good hire here? Urban fell into his lap and he had help in landing UM. I have no idea how one goes about evaluating a coach for WBB. And I'm sure not sure Gene does either. So we either get a good hire or set the program back a few years until Gene leaves. I have no faith in Gene, but hopefully he follows the committee (if there is one).

And again he has to relieve Foster of his position first, which I doubt happens .

Foster needs to do the university of favor and just retire. He had a nice run, the program is clearly in decline and has been for a few years. It's time for a change.

Really? (Past 5 years)

2009: 29-6 (1st place Big Ten, conference tourney champs, Sweet 16, B1G POY, 1 AA, 1 First Team All B1G)

2010: 31-5 (1st place Big Ten, conference tourney champs, B1G POY, 1 AA, 2 First Team All B1G)

2011: 24-10 (3rd place Big Ten, conference tourney champs, Sweet 16, B1G POY, 1 AA, 1 First Team All B1G, 1st round draft pick)

2012: 25-6 (2nd place Big Ten, B1G POY, 1 First Team All B1G, 1st round draft pick)

2013: 18-13 (7-9)

Clearly the program has been in a decline recently. :roll2:

I get that the program would likely have a better future with a fresh, young HC for the girls program, but to say its been in a decline is a laugh.

Frankly, that does look like a decline to me.....but not a collapse

Consistent 1st place finishes then
Not so much now

My boss is 64 and got fired last week. He'd been a great supporter of me and a personal friend. It's difficult to hear the words whispered by others about how "the old guy has lost touch and should just retire". I'm 47 and have never thought about what it's going to be like to be that guy at 64 that everyone else whispers about. It's a tough situation for all involved. Sure, the program could use a spark right now. But there is something to be said for stability even if it means holding on to a veteran coach in a slow.....Fosters decline is definitely slow.....declining sunset. We should use it as a ever to get the next Pat Summit or Auriemma who will know that they have latitude to build their own foundation for success.
