K/P Ben Buchanan (official thread)

Legitimate questions...and here is the answer as best as I can tell...taking Ben this year means OSU does not have to take one of each next year. Ben is good enough to eventually punt, kickoff and handle the FG duties. By taking Ben this year, he can redshirt next year and be the team's punter in 2009 when Trapasso is gone. He will handle those duties for two years until Pettrey has graduated and then can take over the kickoff and FG duties during his redshirt junior and senior seasons.

Having gone back and looked at how this class could fill out and taking into account how good Ben is (maybe the top overall kicking prospect in the nation) I think it is very smart to take him this year and not have to worry about either spots next year. Waiting until next year would have meant having to take one of each, neither of which might be as good as Ben is. I know people are worried about the small number of 'ships available this year but I think he will be closer to 18-19 when it is all said and done. And you can't pass on a kid with this kind of talent, especially not when JT puts so much emphasis on special teams.

Thanks for the thorough response. I can't wait to watch Ben nail some 50+ yarders for us in the future. :osu:

I think I mentioned this in the thread before but it won't hurt to say it again.

I had the pleasure of scouting Jonathan Alder when they played WC this year. Ben missed a 63 yard field goal by a few feet.....dead center, just short. He is easily the best high school kicker I have ever seen, and I saw Groom and Sander in highschool.

I can't tell you people how amazing his leg is....absolute power...every kick had "that noise"...you know that noise...the one when you know the kicker just dropped a bomb!!

Welcome to Ben!!!

O.K., let me try this out:

"Nuuuuuuuuge!"

"Huuuuuuuu!" (ston)

"Byuuuuuuuu!"...yep, that seems to work. :)

That works too. But in the mean time, could someone clue me in on what we're chanting for Pettrey? I felt a bit lost this past season. :wink2:

Welcome Mr. Buchanan! :osu: Way to kick off the '08 Class!

They call Pettrey PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great News!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome aboard Ben!!!!!!

I really think it is unrealistic to have a guy handle K, P, KO all for the same team, just b/c the leg will get tired, but Ben has a great leg and if wherever the coaches decide to put him I think he will be great.
