In fact something that isn't talked about NEARLY enough with regards to offensive woes the last 2 seasons is Urban himself. It's his offense. It's easy to blame Beck for a variety of reasons, namely, he came in after a NC and team was loaded with talent and everyone expected it to stay humming.

I suspect Urban knew what he was getting and thought he could work around it. He is obsessed with recruiting and in that regard, he had to be pleased with Beck. Nobody ever said Beck was a great offensive mind. It's just not something he has EVER been known for. And Urban knew it. Like Herman, I think Urb figured he could work with that by his "team" approach and it failed miserably. WAY too many cooks in the kitchen.

The difference now, if Wilson is hired, is that Urban will trust him more and give him the keys from the get go. In fact, in retrospect, I'll go so far as to say that Hermans early struggles were probably somewhat the result of a micromanaging boss. Urban may have been named after a Pope but he isn't infallible.

I suspect Urban has self assessed like all great leaders do and he's going to take a different approach. If Wilson is the hire, my hunch is he gets full control over the offense moreso than any OC that Urb has ever had.

I wonder if Herman is going to have the same problem. Thinks he can use Beck as a recruiter and just micromanage him as an OC and QB coach.

That profound statement from Woody Hayes rings true for Ohio State not even a week into its offseason. A 31-0 loss to Clemson in the Fiesta Bowl on New Year's Eve — largely due to a horribly underwhelming offense — forced Urban Meyer's hand and the head coach moved quickly.

Tim Beck left to be Tom Herman's offensive coordinator at Texas and Meyer replaced him with Ryan Day, who served as a graduate assistant for the head coach at Florida. And the program is reportedly set to hire former Indiana head coach Kevin Wilson as its next offensive coordinator. What that means for the man that held that position the last two years, Ed Warinner, remains unclear.

But Meyer knew he had to make major changes following the stunning loss to the Tigers, the first time in his career his team failed to score a single point. The offensive regression the last two seasons was noticeable, namely in a lack of creativity from a play calling standpoint and struggles at the quarterback position. Even still, J.T. Barrett was named the Big Ten's Quarterback of the Year and shared the Silver Football as Big Ten MVP with Penn State's Saquon Barkley in 2016.

To fix what ails them, the Buckeyes appear to be turning to Wilson, who before he pieced together far less talented players at Indiana into terrific offenses, torched the Big 12 as Oklahoma's offensive coordinator. Before that, Wilson led a resurgent effort at Northwestern from 1999-2001. His final year in Evanston doubles as the first season Meyer received a head coaching position, at Bowling Green. Meyer honed his offense with a ton of the same principles as Wilson after sending an assistant to Northwestern to learn as much as he possibly could.
