RPG 5.1

KEvin Garnett #5 PF

Pau Gasol #16, PF
PPG 18.9
RPG 8.4
BPG 1.5

Ok, this is a pretty close matchup, a few key concerns if you are the Lakers is how will Gasol deal with Garnett? During the regular season, Garnett got into Andrew Bynums face at the beginning of thier first match up and intimidated the hell out of him, he played very meek throughout the game. KG talks trash and gets angry, Gasol is not really known as a "banger" he's more of a hook shot finesse guy.

Pierce on Odom, Slight Advantage to Pierce
Garnette on Gasol, Advantage Garnette
Allen on Bryant, Advantage Bryant

Overall Advantage, Celtics.

Role Players

Bostons Role Players, Kendrick Perkins and Rajon Rondo

Los Angeles Role players, Derek Fisher, Vladimir Radmanovic

The stats between both are pretty close, the lakers role players combine for an average of 20.1 PPG and the Celtics role players are 17.5. Fisher and Perkins can have break out games where they dominate, but those aren't very common with the big three they have.

Advantage, Even

Coaching

I am not going to go into a lot of depth here, the resumes of the coaches speak for themselves, the advantage has to go to the Lakers with Phil Jackson. I don't think much more needs to be said on that topic :)

The Bench

The Benches for these teams both have thier advantages, the Lakers bench is young and energetic, with the four key components averaging around 34 points a game on the season. The Celtics bench is deep, they play a lot more of their bench but in smaller minutes, and there's some experience there with same Cassell, the five key components average 37 Points per game.

I believe the Benches will most likely determine this series, the longer the starters can rest, the better the stars will shine.

Advantage, this is pretty even to be honest, I thought when I started looking up stats this would be a huge advantage to the Lakers, but the numbers are a lot closer than I previously assumed. I want to give a slight advantage to the Lakers for this reason, the Celtics BLEW people out in the regular season, so bench players got to spend a lot of time playing in a low stress environment. The Lakers play down to their competition and had a lot more close games, so the bench had to keep them in it.

A big concern if you are a Lakers fan is whether or not that regular season Celtics team can return. They haven't been the same team in the playoffs, but during the regular season they dominated, especially against the Western conference. If that team still has some gas in the tank, or they are waiting to "turn it on" then this could be a very quick series. A big concern if you are a Celtics fan is going to be the role players for the Lakers, when they get hot it will start raining threes, and the Lakers are very capable of putting points on the board, if the outside shots open up it's going to force coverage outside leaving more space in the middle for the Lakers stars to work.

These two teams are easily the most successful of the NBA franchises, in the last 60 years, these two teams have combined to win 30 NBA titles, with 16 going to the Celtics and 14 going to the Lakers. Overall in the finals, the Celtics are 8-2 VS the Lakers. 7 Of those games were played in the 60's and 70's when Boston completely dominated, winning 12 Titles in 18 years. During the 80's, the two teams met three times, with the Lakers winning twice and the Celtics winning in the 83-84 season.

Overall Series Advantage, Celtics, but not by much.

That's my thoughts.

I can't really give a prediction, I am a fan of the Lakers, but I will say this series could easily go either way, both teams have a large body in the middle, both teams have great shooting and great defenders, they both protect the ball, the Celtics will have home court advantage, but with the 2-3-2 format of the finals, the Lakers could steal one in Boston and gain an enormous advantage in the series, the same could be said for the Celtics. The Lakers have played 15 Playoff games this season compared to 20 for the Celtics, but both will have 5+ days off so I don't think that's going to matter. Boston has the advantage with beating the Lakers both times in the regular season, and home court, but the Lakers have more experiece in the playoffs with this group, Fisher and Bryant have been here and know what it takes to win.
