The Class (Entre les murs)
Entre les murs (2008)
French Language. Won the Palm d"or at Cannes, looks and feels like a documentary, but isn't. A year in the life of a teacher, his students, their parents and faculty at a Parisian middle school...with all of it's racial diversity and complex cultural and ethnic struggles. You become immersed in the classroom, get caught up in the lives of these kids and personally, I couldn't help but compare the similarities and differences of and to their American counterparts - like no other film of this genre has ever done to me before. And practically the whole time I'm thinking over and over again how important, ridiculously underpaid and grossly under appreciated teachers everywhere are. Salute!! Goes out limited only on the 30th of January, so, for those interested, this one you should probably queue up on DVD when the time comes. Besides, there is so much going on in the class room, and given the length and occasional intensity, this one is better seen at home anyway, imo.
