Part of having 8 & 10-year-old girls is occasionally having to go see things you would have zero interest in under any other circumstances. Tonight I had to sit through "Barbie." The pros: It has some genuinely meta-funny parts; quite a few, actually - it is well-acted for what it is - its intended message is a good one. The Cons: it spends nearly the whole movie quite literally beating you over the head with that message.
It's so on the nose my eyes started rolling out of my head mid-way through. With just a touch of subtlety, it could have been quite enjoyable. As it is, it takes its message and flips it almost 180 degrees, making it not really a message at all. 4/10 for me. The girls loved it, though, so at least there's that.

I’ll disagree and say that I think it is pretty subtle in a lot of its messaging. If you take it simply as a “women are awesome, men suck” movie, I’d definitely agree. But I see a lot more than that in there. I’ve spent WAY more time thinking about that movie than I would have expected.

Thanks for ken-splaining this.

Just watched The Batman (2022, available on Prime) and it exceeded expectations. A bit darker and a little different from previous attempts.

Killers of the Flower Moon comes out. Getting almost unanimous great reviews - how can it be bad with Leo and DeNiro?

For me, I'm not that excited about the movie, as I've read the book. And it was amazing. It's a cliche when you have a book that you can't put down, but this was the case. I bought it at an airport during a layover and when I got home I pretty much ignored my family to read the rest of the book. The story is quite amazing and hard to believe it's true. Can't believe it isn't more widely known but when the victims are American Indians I guess it shouldn't be surprising.

Hopefully the movie is as good as the book.

Saw Downfall last night - the German movie that depicts the final days of WW2 from Hitler's bunker. Movie famous for the Hitler temper tantrum meme.
Pretty good movie - I had trouble keeping track of all the characters but in some ways that doesn't matter.
Apparently the movie was criticized by some by depicting the human side of Hitler. That's just stupid. Hitler comes across as a complete monster, but in the end we have to understand he was human. And as such, another person just like could show up yet again. #NeverForget

The Dry. Fantastic adaptation of a terrific book, which I highly recommend reading first. Stunning book for a writer's first try (and the sequel is solid and unique).

Only downside is now that Eric Bana has aged, I can't help but see this character as a more handsome Urban Meyer :slappy:

p.s. Tried to watch the newer ghostbusters for a solid hour and gave up. Tried to be nostalgic and failed. DIdn't try to be funny and succeeded (other than McKinnon). This has to be the only time I've seen someone make Bill Murray not funny. What is it with this female bunch? I feel like it's store brand Adam Sandler, except for the opposite sex so it's popular. Adam Sandler's group isn't funny (we've seen that a lot lately), they can merely be used humorously with proper writing.

Pretty sure you're allowed to eat Eric Bana in a Colorado blizzard

'Aquaman The Lost Kingdom.' Not great, Bob. Thin storyline, clunky effects, dumb attempts at humor; it has none of the goofiness and fun that made the first one enjoyable. This will do nothing to improve DC's lackluster cinematic reputation. 3/10

I just saw the Director's Cut of Dardevil, the one with Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner. So cheesy and dumb - I guess the director's cut is an improvement, but not sure it was worth renting it for a few bucks. But when TV stations show the movie, they should show the director's cut. It's not that much longer and it's better.

Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning pt 1.

Started out a little slow/cheesy but became it's usually strong self as it progressed.

So glad I picked this up at hte library for the depth of the sound through the stereo system. This would have been very disappointing through Paramount+.
