I watched The Holdovers last night. I know it's got a great rating, but I wasn't expecting much. There have been many movies that I watched b/c they were acclaimed but I found them incredibly boring. The Master by Paul Anderson comes to mind. I thought it was horrible/boring.

But I thought The Holdovers was great. It's not for everybody. I imagine if I was younger I wouldn't like it. But I'm approaching 50 so any good movie about older men going through a crisis will be an appeal to me. And Paul Giamatti is great. Reminds me of his character in Sideways. It's a joke that he wasn't even nominated for an Oscar for that. He should win for this. Far more impressive performance than Murphy in Oppenheimer.

Just catching up. Are we talking buying tickets, sitting in plush seats with overpriced popcorn and sodas, or curling up on couches and popping our own corn by watching Netflix, etc? I can sit for hours, clicking through some C & D movies on Netflix, that have some big stars in them, that never made it to the movie theaters. Have started more than several, but gotten bored after about 15 minutes.

'Aquaman The Lost Kingdom.' Not great, Bob. Thin storyline, clunky effects, dumb attempts at humor; it has none of the goofiness and fun that made the first one enjoyable. This will do nothing to improve DC's lackluster cinematic reputation. 3/10

I saw a little bit of this piece of shit the other day. It was hilarious, in a way. Didn't finish/10

My Dune Part 2 thoughts:

1). I’m lucky that I live in an area that’s very close to a theater with dining options and reclining seats. It’s like sitting in box seats for a football game. Very tough to do it Any other way after your experience it.

2). People are gonna talk about the visuals and scenery and seeing it in IMAX. But the movie as one of the best scores I’ve ever heard. You need to hear Dune Part 2 just as much as you need to see it.

3). It is a very very enjoyable movie that is very very well made. But it is absolutely not the best sequel in the history of cinema.

Empire Strikes Back
The Dark Knight
Dune Part 2
The Two Towers
Avengers Endgame
This is probably how I would rank my top five.

4). Javier Bardem gives the best performance

5). I’m really enjoying the TikTok’s and memes for Dune part two:

1) I agree about the cost and movie theater distractions (midday matinees help a lot here). I usually opt for blu-ray (esp owning) over theater for many. 1-3 times a year I must make an exception (Dune, Top Gun Maverick). If my life were less busy every Mission Impossible would be on that list.

2) Flat screens have robbed us of sound (and soundbars are a poor bandaid).

3) Streaming has made it worse, because we traded in selection for convenience, and audio depth for not having to pickup the disc at the store. Netflix, Disney, etc sound is dreadful, even if you have a powerful sound system. It's like dropping from a Ferrari to a V4 Camaro. Sure it's still kinda fast but it doesn't knock you back in your seat. It can't.

1) Which theater do you like? I opted for Newport on the Levee despite the drive. It's not the biggest, but that also meant I could sit near the back with a handicapped family member and not feel like I was in the cheap seats. The sound and rumble seats added a lot to a movie that's a constant THX title screen moment.

I opted for Dolby since there are no true IMAX options in Ohio. The closest options were Detroit and indy.

2) Agreed there. There are a few films where the score is incredible, but sometimes the inbetween moments are interludes rather than compatible pieces. The heartbeat of this movie is unending.

3) The fact that it's in conversation for the best sequel ever is remarkable. And all of your top 5 have such an arsenal of characters, scores, villains and visceral emotion. I think it is resounding with viewers due to the depth in such a shallow era of filmmaking. It doesn't break the trend of remakes (every single trailer was one), but it has such substance and authenticity in an era of money grabs.

4) No question. The amount of captivating actors is substantial.

5) Once you've seen Dune 2 (not before), go look for the Trump Dune memes. Not posting here due to spoilers.

p.s. I never realized just how much of Stars Wars came from this (though I know you can do the same with those that came before Dune)

For pure convenience, it's the AMC 9 in Anderson Town Center. Decent service, close to home and big screen. Food is pricey but I'm being a slob and ordering an Oreo milkshake to my seat prior to Dune 2, so it's a treat and I don't mind the price.

Failing that, the Encore at Blue Ash has some nice options as well but is a little smaller. I haven't been there in awhile so It might have gotten gobbled up by COVID and shut down.

Thanks Woof and jwin. Was gonna go to the local theater to watch here in Hanford, CA. Now I'm going to make the trek to Fresno and their Imax. As you say, it's a treat. This part of Dune (in the book) has the most action, so should be a humdinger. The Kyle Mclachlan version was pretty close to the storyline (for those long of tooth), and cannot wait to see this version. PS, Sting (waaay much younger) was a marvelous Harkonnen, but this bald guy might surpass him for sheer arrogance. Always smuggle in my own junior mints (popcorn too bulky), but Woof's oreo shake sounds delicious. Now, all gotta do is coordinate wifey's schedule with mine....This treat will probably equal the price of two Happy Meals....
