LB Etienne Sabino (official thread)

Fickell said Andrew Sweat beat out Etienne Sabino basically because Sweat picked up on the strong-side linebacker responsibilities extremely well. Both were changing positions -- Sweat from weak-side last year, and Sabino from the middle.

One reason to redshirt Sabino is he's still only 19. Really, it sounds like a case where they would rather push "pause" in his career and have a much more productive final two years with him than have him spend another year as a backup with limited opportunities. It reminds me of when we sent our stepson to kindergarten when he was turning 5 in early September, but then decided to hold him back and repeat the next year, so he wasn't always the youngest and furthest behind.

With TM out for the season, is there any chance that Etienne Sabino gets some playing time? I know it was mentioned in an earlier post that Sabino was redshirting this season (baring any injuries). Well, now tOSU defense has taken a major hit. Also, all the starting OSU LB's are on the small side. At 6' 3" and 240lbs... it seems that Babino would bring some much needed size to the LBs.

With that said, I wish Tyler a speedy recovery and a 6th yr at tOSU!

Doubtful as they were playing him as a db

"Star" position is a LB-DB hybrid...

Yeah I know but the point was unless they want to move one of the linebackers to Star like Rolle. I don't see what activating Sabino does to help them.

I think what you are getting at is that he Sabino was getting reps at the star in preseason due to his athleticism.

Either way I think it is doubtful.

Little, erring on the side of no chance. The redshirt was an agreed upon by both player and coach in order to switch to MLB and still have two full years for Sabino following this season.

Well, with all that considered...IMHO, I don't think any one player's redshirt is more important than the team regardless of "behind closed door" promises. If the coaches think Sabino needs to play because not having him is a detriment to the team: he'll play. However I don't think MLB/OLB is the issue it's the secondary in particular safety & star positions. If he's far and away the best option at star then getting him on the field to help make a NC run should be more important to him and the team than a redshirt could ever be.

just my .02

I see what you're saying, but trust me he'll keep his redshirt.

How did this all come about anyway? The guys that received the 2nd and 3rd team reps at the STAR are Christian Bryant and Nate Oliver. I don't really see where Sabino's name should've come up.

I agree 100% he keeps the redshirt.

The question was posed by socalOSUfan in Ty Moeller's thread if Bino gets playing time since TM was out...

...just something for us to chew on since losing CJ and now TM for the season.:( I think another important question is if Indiana is lining up 5 wide and 4 wide all game are 2 LBs gonna be on the field or do we see another CB?

I think Sabino might have been listed as a backup at star on the first depth chart of the season?

This doesn't pass the smell test. Unless Homan's injury is going to be longer than two weeks and this is a more permanent change to the line-up, why burn it now and against the worst team in the Big Ten and also right before a bye.

I agree. Homan being down for longer than what we thought is my guess.

If Homan is going to be out longer than hoped / expected they prolly want Bino to get game reps... Otherwise, my thoughts exactly, why now? Why against the worst team in the B10... and oh yeah, the bye.

Sabino also practiced at rush end, linebacker, and star. Could be a combination of all of the injuries...though Bino would have been nice to have in Wisconsin. Maybe to get him some game reps before Iowa/Michigan.

Hope we have other options.
