Change In Plans For Glenville's Lenix

Earlier today, Bucknuts.com reported that Cleveland Glenville linebacker Freddie Lenix was having issues being cleared by OSU's admissions office. However, a visit by OSU coach Jim Tressel has shed some new light on Lenix's situation. We also have an update on Jamario O'Neal and his summer plans. Click here for the latest. Earlier today, Bucknuts.com reported that Cleveland Glenville linebacker Freddie Lenix was having issues getting cleared by Ohio State’s admissions office.

But things took a dramatic turn with this story earlier today, when OSU head coach Jim Tressel paid a visit to Glenville.

“We’re good,” Glenville coach Ted Ginn Sr. said. “He’s going to grayshirt. Coach Tressel was in there today. He’s going to take some classes in the fall. Everything is good.”

According to Ginn, Lenix passed the muster of the NCAA clearinghouse. But it was OSU’s suddenly more stringent admissions policies that caught him up. The coach did not go into detail about specific marks.

"It's not over, but it doesn't look good," Ginn told our Duane Long for the initial report that was posted at noontime today. “He passed NCAA standards. This is the Ohio State admissions office."

The visit from Tressel may have also headed off any notion that Lenix might consider enrolling elsewhere. He also considered Iowa and Wisconsin strongly before signing with OSU.

Lenix is currently one of the top track performers in the state and is in the middle of trying to lead Glenville to another state track championship.

Lenix was rated as a four-star prospect and the No. 27 linebacker in the nation by scout.com. Lenix was consistently ranked among the top 15 prospects in Ohio by Ohio High magazine throughout his career. He had 147 tackles and 12 sacks as a senior.

I think its ridiculous to do this too a kid in May, after he signed in February.
Now unless Freddie completely slacked off (hell who didn't their final qtr of HS) and his grades dropped too much, then he should be allowed in.
That is the only case I see fit to pull a schollie after a signature.
It would suck really, really bad to lose this kid now.

I'm a teacher of seniors and senioritis-and the bitchy attitudes it inspires-drives me and every other teacher nuts. Not speaking about Freddie Lenix specifically, but I think think it is a good thing if a college zaps a senior for taking a snooze.

I have an out of curiosity question.
After Lenix signed his LOI to play at tOSU, lets say he does not pass admissions and decides to transfer.
Since he signed a letter with a big 10 school, would he then have had to pay his way if he transferred to another one?
And what about just going to another I-A school, do you lose a year like any other transfer?

I am just glad hes still coming here.
This is a commendable move by this young man to further himself in the long run.
In todays me first world, its good to see a kid decide to do the right thing, instead of just say screw it and move to another school that offered early PT.

As a greyshirt he can re-take classes and get things up to par before actually enrolling at OSU. A greyshirt means a kid is not actually enrolled on scholarship at OSU-and doesn't even have to be in Columbus, I believe. Todd Boeckman greyshirted a year, then took a RS year-he will be a RS frosh this year, I believe. Additionally-and maybe the reason for the GS-is the fact that OSU's admissions standards are much more lax during winter and spring quarters-the school is not looking at class rank per se, apparently, and is also looking to replace the dropouts from the 8-9,000 forsh who enrolled in the fall-as many as 10-20% go home, apparently.
Also, football-wise, I think this will actually benefit Lenix. He is skinny from running track, and at 6'0 195 can certainly use some more muscle-he would have almost certainly RSed this year anyway, w/ our depth at LB. Now he can hit the books and weights hard, and enroll next January w/ 20lbs more of muscle, and a newfound respect for academic diligence, hopefully.

If a school admissions office gives a kid the thumbs down, but not the NCAA, the kid is free to immediately sign w/ another school. This is why Bobby Washington signed w/ NC State, instead of the Canes-the Miami admissions office turned him down, and the Pack did it's usual academic carcass picking act....

I am very happy for Freddie and his family, he is one of the kids that waited patiently all recruiting process to be offered by OSU and he did that because he wanted to become a Buckeye and although he has had a "bump" in the road, his dream is going to become reality. I am glad we can finally have a happy ending to one of these situations that are becoming all to familiar to people like me who follow recruiting.

Please don't forget that Coach Tressel did not have to offer him the opportunity to gray shirt and that just shows you what kind of young man and talented athlete he is.
