m*ch*gan ATH Allen Gant

http://www.duanelongreport.com/

Allen Gant is another of this outstanding defensive back class that has questions as far as what kind of athlete he is. It is actually more than that. It is where he fits. He has the talent to play receiver but I have never believed he had the speed. The big question will be if he is fast enough to play safety and if not does he have the frame to grow into an outside linebacker?

FOX Toledo Sports Director

SYLVANIA, Ohio (WUPW) - Hardcore Sports caught up with Southview's Allen Gant one night after the defensive back was offered a full-ride football scholarship to the University of Michigan.

The offer took Gant by surprise.

"I expected to go to camp, I think it was June 19th, perform there, and then I was thinking get an offer after that," Gant said. "But this offer really did shock me."

Michigan offensive coordinator Al Borges made the call to Gant, explaining that he had spoken with head coach Brady Hoke and to everybody else on the Michigan staff.

"I've been real excited seeing what the colleges are looking for," Gant said. "For me to be able to get this scholarship at the University of Michigan was an honor."

Gant's family history is full of Michigan football. He's related to former Heisman winner Charles Woodson. Also, his father, Tony, played free safety for the Maize and Blue.

"Both him and my mom, my grandparents, they grew up around a Michigan family and they're really excited," Gant said.

Still, his family isn't pressuring Gant to head up north to Ann Arbor. They want their son to do what's best for him.

So far, Gant also has offers from West Virginia, Boston College, Cincinnati, Toledo, Bowling Green, and Miami of Ohio. Also, Ohio State has shown interest for years. A scholarship offer from the Buckeyes could make for an intriguing recruiting battle for Gant.

"It'd (a Buckeye offer) be really special, but just like any other school, any offer from them is an honor.

Allen Gant - The Forgotten Prospect
Sylvania Southview coach, Jim Mayzes told me today that Allen Gant had just received an offer from Michigan. Why not? He should! Gant was so good as a freshman that it may have hurt him. He has continued to improve, but recruiters seem to expect a faster climb. A possible four letter winner in three sports. Sometimes athletes get close to being maxed out too early, but this is not the case with Allen.

Last fall I was impressed with his toughness on the football field. Stood out as a free safety. Excellent open field tackler. Good ball skills. Anticipated well. Most of all, when he had a chance to "strike" he did. Covered sideline to sideline.

Last winter I was impressed with his smoothness on the basketball court. Liked his balance and his ability to change direction. Anticipation was good. Good quickness. Of course, very competitive.

This spring I have been impressed with his efforts on the track. Put the shot 47'11 and tossed the discus 136 feet. Also runs third leg on a very fast 4X100m relay team.

Allen now stands just over 6'1 and weighs 205 pounds. Recently, bench pressed 275 pounds - 8 times. Impressive for a young man who plays three sports and still lives in the weight room.

Smart, smart offer by Hoke and Co. We've been talking about how strong this 2012 class is for years and they could really clean up in Ohio this year. That's only going to make recruiting in Ohio easier down the road...

Despite his well-documented fanaticism for the Buckeyes (Gant grew up a huge Ohio State fan) the timing, distance from home, and chance to follow in his father's footsteps at Michigan was just too enticing.

"I did grow up an OSU fan when I was little because my uncle coached there," Allen said. "But once I started my career in high school I got more familiar with the tradition at Michigan.

"When it came to the ultimate decision, I wanted to get it over with before entering my senior season and take some of the pressure off of myself. I felt all along that following in my father's footsteps would be a great option. My father and mom had talked about weighing my options but when you consider the distance that would make it possible for them to attend games and everything else, it was an easy decision from that stand point."

Allen admits he would have liked an Ohio State offer to at least consider, stating that that the problems going on at Ohio State ? he "wishes them well" ? would not have factored into his ultimate decision.

He remains very happy to be at Michigan, impressed mostly by the coaches and the chance to be a part of the rebuilding process.

As his official career as a Wolverine kicks off sometime in 2012, Gant has laid out three things he would like to accomplish:
Beat Ohio State ? "Always Ohio State when it comes to the team I want to beat. My uncle Shawn Sims coached the Buckeyes running backs when I was younger, he's the one who got me to be an Ohio State fan, but even he will be wearing maize and blue when we play the Buckeyes."
