Madison Square Garden Brawl

just to elibrate more on your point jwin......the answer to your baseball question is no...Ex: last night the fight started on a "hard" foul.....now in baseball if someone gets hit (say a star player, i.e. Albert Pujols) you DON'T see people fighting.....the oposing team justs waits until their star player comes to bat and they throw at him.....it part of the game...last nights fight just shows you that something seriously needs to be done in the NBA.....
I agree something needs to be done... but in baseball you are out of line if you don't bean the opposing team back. And you do see people fighting in baseball, but that does not seem to be looked down upon as much by the general public.

I think the "closeness" of the fans in a basketball arena is what makes the brawls that much more of a problem. In baseball and hockey the fans are isolated from the fight, but when you have 6'8" 260 lbs guys pushing and shoving five feet away from you some people are going to feel a little unsafe.

very true....but I don't think it happens as much as in Bball...I may be mistaken??? Plus I think the public has a bad taste in their mouths after the whole Indiana Pacers debocale with the Ron Artest thing....

Part of the problem is that the mayhem is very visible. The hard fouls that start these brawls are in an open spotlight. It is just one on one and they are there for all to see. From there it all just escalates.
In football and baseball the whole teams are involved which softens the impact.
You can't use the "get even " tactic as in baseball. It boils down to protecting your team(mate).

Note to Isiah: If you don't want to be embarrassed in the Garden, try not being down by about 20 points late in the game.

George Karl has the right to play whomever he wants regardless of the score. His judgment of still having 'Melo in the game will obviously be questioned, as the upcoming suspension should prove costly to the Nuggets.

Carmelo's bitch-slap was a total cheap shop. He was restrained twice before seeing the chance to smack Collins, and then ran away like a pussy. I initially thought it was worth 10 games, but they might give him less since the hand was open.

I don't recall seeing 10 guys being thrown out of a basketball game at once.

Carmelo Anthony showed how spineless he truly is...slap and run.

Pathetic.
Exactly. That was just plain ridiculous. He reaches in, sucker-punch/slaps somebody, then backpeddles half way across the court like a frightened dog. He's always seemed like an ass to me. I remember an interview he did on the Jimmy Kimmel show his rookie season were he seemed like a complete asshat. Open fist or closed, he needs to sit for at least 10 games, probably more. Collins, Robinson and Smith too. I'll never understand why multi-millionaire athletes behave like this. Fucking idiots.

This is why Carmelo will never be able to catch the endorsements like DWade and Lebron... that and the fact that he's never going to be as good a basketball player.

'Melo is a thug. Plain and simple.

Bingo........he's taking the Iverson path instead of the Jordan route.

I think it's appropriate to call 'Melo a thug. He does this video basically calling out "snitches" (and if you've ever known a snitch, they walk around with eyes in the back of their heads, until they get shot or get the shit kicked out of them). Then he pulls this punch-and-run pussy move. He's a Thug. I don't care how many tatoos or cornrows he has, because my opinion of an individual is based upon actions - and his are despicable.

'Melo had a chance to be one of those guys who the league could look to and say, "he's a star and he's a good guy." That can never happen now.

I do, however, believe that the public holds basketball players to a different standard than other pro athletes. And I believe that it is, in a way, tied to culturalism.

I agree, the NBA has gone to shit since the days of Magic, Bird, Jordan and many others.
It sickens me of the way professional Basketball players conduct themselves.

I can not believe Stern got backlash from having the player dress in a manner that is acceptable to the public before games. Come on NBA players thats your job and thats why you make, sometimes don't deserve millions.

I don't know if I was saying that at all. Players in the 80s fought just as much, if not more, than players now. It was stupid then and it's stupid now.

The difference, in my opinion is how the public sees these players. And what the public disapproves of, in large part, is the long shorts, cornrows and tatoos. That is apparently what a "thug" looks like. But a 'thug' doesn't look like anything. A 'thug' 'acts' like a 'thug.'

I understand what a lot of you guys are saying, but the thing I just don't understand is why the whole league is labeled as a thug league.

Someone mentioned money...Well NFL and MLB get money just the same and I have seen plenty of players not play as hard as they have or sit out due to tiny injuries...

I understand there are some incidents that could be considered thugish, like the this brawl, the pacers/pistons brawl, Spreewell hitting his coach, but overall it isnt anymore than what we have seen in other sports.

I mean look at the Yankees/Red Sox bench clearing brawl where Zimmer went after Pedro, or the guy that threw the bat at the umpire this past year, Roberto Alomar spitting in the umps face, the managers arguing calls all the time, all the bench clearing brawls, beam balls...Or NFL with Haynesworth...

I understand the labeling of a player or two, but the whole league is what gets me. LBJ, Dwade, Bosh, Duncan, Yao, Shaq, Kobe, Garnett, etc...The list goes on of marketable non-thug like guys, but still the image...

And it wasnt like this 10 or so years ago, I mean everyone loved Jordan, but he talked just as much shit out on the court as the guys do today...

You have the same type of thug like superstars in the NFL that as long as they are doing ok, prime example Pac-man Jones is making some plays now and you don't hear the label anymore, all the Bengals guys that were arrested and there for a week they talked like they should crucify the team, and yet nothing...

B4 when you talked about Hard fouls and shit talking you talked about the Bad boys and it was looked at like imtimidation, now not so much.

I completely agree. When a player or team from another league does something "thuggish", it only reflects on that player or team. But, in the NBA, when this happens, the whole league takes a hit.

I know the NBA gets a bad rap for being a Thug league and they have had some bad incidents, but really how do people go from loving some of these kids in college bball and then labling them as thugs in the NBA.

Hmmm, maybe it's because these ass-clowns don't brawl in college lest the NCAA revoke their eligibility. Ya think? :roll1:

The things is how many of these guys actually brawl...The have been maybe 10 suspensions for fighting. I am sure there have been more suspensions in MLB than in NBA for fighting.

The things is when guys like Hawk, Holmes, etc. go to the NFL the college fans follow their careers and some will say I like college better, but follow the nfl to see how former guys in college I used to watch are doing.

When it comes to the NCAA and college bball I just don't hear that. When guys go to the NBA they are almost forgotten by the NCAA.

Alot of times when talking about past success in college football you here about how so and so is doing in the nfl. You don't here much about guys like Charlie Ward, Eric Crouch, etc. b/c they didnt make it in the pros, but in college basketball it is the opposite, you still here about Latener and Hurley and guys that were great college players, but just sucked in the NBA.
