Game Thread Marshall vs tOSU, Thursday Sep 2, 7:30 pm ET, BTN

OSU got bumped by Southern Miss @ South Carolina at 7:30 on ESPN :roll2:

No word on an ESPN2 slot, Florida A&M @ Miami is the only other matchup involving a decent squad.

Seem to remember that each Big Ten team is required to have a minimum of 2 games broadcast by the Big Ten Network including at least one Big Ten matchup.
Seems like tOSU chose to have Marshall as their choice of one BTN broadcast.

I wouldn't worry about this too much because this will only give Ohio State more prep time to worry about Miami the Saturday after. That'd be a critical game to see where they will stand between being a Rose Bowl contender or National Championship contender.

And conversely, more time for ESPN to hype, hype, hype.

I know this is kind of off-topic, but since it was part of the press release, does anyone know who decides whether the games are scheduled at night or not?

When I read this, I thought it was Tress' idea to do a night game. For a while now, there has been an open practice at night right before the season starts--kind of a Spring Game in the Fall. These give the team experience with playing under night game conditions. (Side effect: it's fun for the fans, too--I enjoy them.) So, I figured he saw this game as a great opportunity to have a "real" albeit not especially challenging game under the lights.

Scout.com: 2010 Marshall Preview - Offense

What You Need To Know: One player rarely makes a program or even a unit. That said, Clemson transfer Willy Korn is going to have a chance to be an impact player immediately in Huntington ... provided he unseats incumbent Brian Anderson behind center. Marshall has a good mix of talent elsewhere, from RB Martin Ward and a seasoned offensive line to WR Antavious Wilson and TE Lee Smith. Unlocking this group’s potential, however, is contingent upon the play at quarterback improving. Enter Korn, the one-time can’t-miss recruit, who never achieved his potential in the ACC. He has a new lease on his college career and an enormous opportunity to be the guy who finally builds a bridge to the days when the Herd perennially flourished at producing big-time quarterbacks.

Returning Leaders
Passing: Brian Anderson
231-398, 2,646 yds, 14 TDs, 13 INTs
Rushing: Martin Ward
82 carries, 393 yds, 3 TDs
Receiving: Antavious Wilson
60 catches, 724 yds, 3 TD

Star of the offense: Sophomore WR Antavious Wilson
Player who has to step up and become a star: Junior QB Willy Korn
Unsung star on the rise: Sophomore RB Martin Ward
Best pro prospect: Senior TE Lee Smith
Top three all-star candidates: 1) Smith, 2) Wilson, 3) Senior C Chad Schofield
Strength of the offense: Quarterback depth, receivers and tight ends, the left side of the line
Weakness of the offense: Passing efficiency, red zone offense, big plays

Scout.com: 2010 Marshall Preview - Defense

What You Need To Know: Ever so quietly, coordinator Rick Minter continues to do a very nice job with this defense. Now in his third season at Marshall, he commandeered a group that finished in the top 4 among Conference USA programs in run defense, pass defense, and scoring defense. Fundamentally sharp, the Herd flies to the ball and plays with a pack mentality. The undisputed leader of the group will again be LB Mario Harvey, a 250-pound wrecking ball and one of the league’s best run defenders. The biggest hurdle to maintaining a high level of play rests with the secondary. While FS Omar Brown and CB Ahmed Shakoor return following table-setting years, the rest of the unit is a question mark because of suspensions and graduations. Making matters worse, the D needs to generate more edge pressure than it did a year ago.

Returning Leaders
Tackles: Mario Harvey, 117
Sacks: Mario Harvey, 7
Interceptions: DeQuan Bembry, 3

Star of the defense: Senior LB Mario Harvey
Player who has to step up and become a star: Junior CB Ahmed Shakoor
Unsung star on the rise: Junior DE Vinny Curry
Best pro prospect: Harvey
Top three all-star candidates: 1) Harvey, 2) Curry, 3) Junior FS Omar Brown
Strength of the defense: D-line depth, run defense, linebackers, red zone defense
Weakness of the defense: Edge pressure, pass defense, takeaways

Marshall kicks DB Bembry off team three months after arrest

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Marshall University defensive back DeQuan Bembry has been kicked off the school's football team, some three months after his arrest outside a West Virginia bar.

Coach Doc Holliday announced Bembry's dismissal in a news release Sunday morning. The one-line statement said Holliday was "very disappointed in DeQuan."

Bembry and fellow defensive back T.J. Drakeford had been arrested on misdemeanor charges in April as police cleared several Huntington bars because of fights.

Bembry had been charged with assault on a police officer and underage alcohol consumption, both misdemeanors. Police said he had verbally assaulted an officer.
