Most OverLoved Programs

I think it's Notre Dame in a landslide, maybe Michigan #2. I'm judging this on true love, or long term love, as opposed to a romantic fling. All the team's mentioned here are in the upper tier in long term love, but no one touches ND. Take USC for example: they definitely have the most love right now, but that's because they have unquestionably been the best team in the country over the past three years. But no one, outside of legitimate USC fans, talked much about USC football for the nearly 20 years when they were in a down cycle. Iowa's another example; they're definitely top five in performance over the last three years. Iowa gets a little extra respect when they're good because they generally don't recruit at the same level as some of the others, but when they're fielding a mediocre or a bad team, no one cares about them. Notre Dame though, can run off ten mediocre seasons and still get the love (not necessarily over hyped, although that definitely happens, but over loved). Consider '02, when both OSU and ND had some ugly wins (and this was ND's only decent season in the last decade). The focus on ND was on the WINS, the focus on OSU was on the UGLY. No question in my mind, Notre Dame is tops in over-true-love.

Also, technically I didn't call him an expert. I said the GameDay crew except Corso :wink2:

The media has been choking on USC's johnson since Carson Palmer in 2002.
They're just following the lead of the top teams (including Big10 teams) we've faced

I'm sorry, do any of those teams include Ohio State? And doesn't that list also include the ever-loved Ferentz 2002 Iowa team, whom every commentator under the sun said would have beaten Ohio State.

One of the saddest things that happened was during the 2002 season, where a 2-loss Trojan team was getting hyped by the media after bowl season as the "real" best team in the country over a 14-0 Buckeye team. That was a team that beat all comers, but could never earn respect because they didn't beat "everyone" in the country. Not our fault the condoms lost 2 games that year.

Oklahoma in a landslide

I'm sick of hearing Texas fans build up the strength of the Big12 by saying that Oklahoma has played for 3 of the past 5 national titles.......

the fact is that Stoops and his Oklahoma squad get more undeserving love from the media than any school since Spurrier's Gators........

I saw somewhere that Oklahoma was rated #2 or #3 preseason for 2005.......

no matter how many key players they lose, or how exposed they are during their final 2 games, they still pay no price for that

Give Urban Meyer a couple of years and he will get all the love from the media.....

as for USC, I don't know how you can dispute the fact that they have been frickin' awesome

It's hard to choke on a pencil :)

I agree with ND being the perennial King of being over-loved. the media WANTS them to be good. since the large media centers are on the coasts, it's only natural for teams like USC or the FL teams to get consistent over-hype, but ND seems to be the one team that has the most "national' media love.

scUM is probably second, in the midwest, with Nebraska third
OK has historically played 2nd fiddle to Nebraska, but since NE is down right now, the media has temporarily adopted OK.

To see the bias, all you have to do is look at '03 when OSU was being downgraded for all their close wins and lackluster offense, while Iowa was being admired by the press for their ability to "find a way to win" and winning with defense and special teams! ND in '02 as well, as has already been mentioned.

I can see how you have that perspective right now, because OU has been good the last several years, and so they get a lot of love, even more so since they are a traditional power. But look at the mid-90's, for example, when OU was in a trough. People weren't really talking about them all that much. When they're good, yeah, OU will get plenty of love, like all the big boys will. But it takes an exceptional degree of overlove to dish that love out even when the team's no good.

Zincfinger said loads of stuff that I agree with and then threw this in the middle --
But no one, outside of legitimate USC fans, talked much about USC football for the nearly 20 years when they were in a down cycle.
I just don't remember it that way zincfinger -- there was plenty of press I saw on USC -- even in the down years -- even here in the MidWest. Some of it had a negative cast (Todd -- to the chokium please to get your award, once proud program .. John will have them back next year {said pretty much every year that JR was there}) but coverage it was nonetheless. Plus you would have the annual perfect storm of a media lovefest for the regular ND vs USC game.

See thats love (or over-love if you will), shining the spotlight on a school when they are out of contention and -- well, rudderless.

Today USC is getting all the props the rest of the human race can stomach -- but frankly, they deserve a lot of that praise. They whipped OK and many other comers good and proper, no doubt that they were the best team of the 2004 season. Of course there have been some important off-season changes. Sans Chow et al we shall see if the Trojans are stretched to the breaking point this coming year.

ND get the love for one reason!!!!!!!!! FAN BASE
There's truth to that. ND has the broadest fan base of any program. However, depth is sacrificed for breadth. There are a lot of Notre Dame "fans" who cling to a tenuous Irish/Catholic thread, and many more who know nothing of college football but like Notre Dame because it's on NBC and that seems like the thing to do.;
