Most OverLoved Programs

To our moderators, yes I did use the search tool and didn't find a similiar thread. If there is one, feel free to merge it, although I would still love to here people's current viewpoints. But please, spare me the public asschewing.

I've been watching college football for a bazillion years, and I've always thought it was funny how the media loves certain programs and showers them with continuous positive publicity. Other programs linger in the darkness, or worse, get dumped on badly. I'm not much of a believer in conspiracy theories, but it is clear some programs get a lot more lovin' than others. Granted, some of those programs deserve more accolades and positive attention. But its the absence of any critical review, any negative pub compared to that received by other programs that makes it stand out for me.

So my question is
What are your picks for the top five programs that are currently the most overloved by the media?

These are my picks:

USC - Even before their NC they were getting so much loving they really needed to rent a room with pretty much any sportswriter who mentioned their program. Makes me blush it gets so bad. IMO, the year they split the NC really highlighted the situation. They played a weak schedule and got beat by Cal. LSU deserved to be there. But not according to the media.

scUM - I swear they're recruting classes are perfect and LC can do no wrong (except amongst their diehard fans). I really think Braylon Edwards is a great receiver and I admire him. But it truly is unbelievable to me how much pub he gets. The same treatment for countless others. How many times have you gone to any sports college football website and not seen a Michigan helmet in one of the pictures or thumbnails on the home page?

Iowa - Newly added to the list, the Ferentz bandwagon has got a full head of steam.

Texas - Mack Brown gets so much media sympathy, it reminds me of the love Tom Osborne was getting before he got his NC.

Florida State - They used to share this with scUM south. It seems to be fading a little bit and I suspect they will give it up for ND in another year or two. But the press does love Bobby and all that "Florida Speed".

As for how I think OSU fares, ESPiN aside, I think we're in the middle of the pack for 2 reasons. JT gives a bad interview, and our offense is unexciting. And in today's current climate, hard to give loviin' to a program with that "big cloud" hanging over it (screw you, ESPN).

I'd like to hear what you think - BB

How could we forget about the Throw the Ball All Over the Field Bob Stoops squad? They're great until the end of the season, lately, and they have to play somebody good from another conference.

And all season long he pumps his teams as the best ever and his players as the best ever and they get ALL of the awards and just the last few years they seem all deflated at the end of the season from banging on their own chests and ESPN and ABC lapping it up its just disgusting. The USC BJs are somewhat warranted, but give me a break. I'd take Purdue, Iowa, Michigan, Wisconsin and Ohio State and line them up against either Oklahoma or USC right in a row and I don't think there's anyway either of them survive without a bye in the middle of each game.

The Oklahoma offense gets five years to throw against all their conference foes. I can't name one great pass rusher from any of their opponents. Just another thought.

USC is so overloved that 11 of the 12 experts at the OB picked us to lose. This love thing isn't all it's cut out to be.

Uh, I'd like to see whose those "experts" were. It sure seemed to me that everyone and his dog were picking USC by 8-12 points.

Buckeyeskickbuttocks had a good post on teams being overrated last July. Its interesting to read the article, but the teams link lets you see all the ratings. It backs up the love factor for the teams mentioned so far.

I do think teams being overrated and teams being overloved are not necessarily the same thing, although they often go together. To me, the love thing is more about lack of balance in the publicity the team gets, not just their rankings

Actually, I live in SoCal, home of the Trojan Homers, and there was a major sentiment that USC was not only going to lose, they were going to get their asses KICKED.

I honestly thought it was going to be a Sooner Blowout. They had INSANE trenches, a super running back, and a Heisman winning senior QB who came back SPECIFICALLY to win this game. Up to that point, USC had not impressed me at all with their wins.

So I would have to agree with the USC man on this one, any love that the media is giving to the Trojans now is well deserved. They are a devastating football team.

I think there was alot of love was in the air the previous season. Maybe slickman was dead on about Bobby Stoops. His Love trumped PC's love?

USC and Pete Carroll in a landslide.

The media LOVES them. Nobody else is even in the same ball park.

Herbstreit has already called this years team possibly one of the best in the history of college football (kind of like Miami in 02 )

The ESPN GameDay Crew except for Lee Corso
The ABC halftime crew (James, Shrek, etc.)
The crew that announced the game (Griese and company)
Trev Alberts and Mark May

Had USC been playing anyone other than OU, I think you would have seen a lovefest for them. However, OU was probably loved even more before that game, hence why we had articles like "The Program" and such even after they got embarrassed in 2003.

USC is clearly an impressive team, however they definitely have the capacity to lose. They may now lose another guy on their DL, so they could struggle a little at first. We will know exactly to what extent they are "overloved" after september is over, assuming Ohio State beats Texas & Iowa.
