To our moderators, yes I did use the search tool and didn't find a similiar thread. If there is one, feel free to merge it, although I would still love to here people's current viewpoints. But please, spare me the public asschewing.
I've been watching college football for a bazillion years, and I've always thought it was funny how the media loves certain programs and showers them with continuous positive publicity. Other programs linger in the darkness, or worse, get dumped on badly. I'm not much of a believer in conspiracy theories, but it is clear some programs get a lot more lovin' than others. Granted, some of those programs deserve more accolades and positive attention. But its the absence of any critical review, any negative pub compared to that received by other programs that makes it stand out for me.
So my question is
What are your picks for the top five programs that are currently the most overloved by the media?
These are my picks:
USC - Even before their NC they were getting so much loving they really needed to rent a room with pretty much any sportswriter who mentioned their program. Makes me blush it gets so bad. IMO, the year they split the NC really highlighted the situation. They played a weak schedule and got beat by Cal. LSU deserved to be there. But not according to the media.
scUM - I swear they're recruting classes are perfect and LC can do no wrong (except amongst their diehard fans). I really think Braylon Edwards is a great receiver and I admire him. But it truly is unbelievable to me how much pub he gets. The same treatment for countless others. How many times have you gone to any sports college football website and not seen a Michigan helmet in one of the pictures or thumbnails on the home page?
Iowa - Newly added to the list, the Ferentz bandwagon has got a full head of steam.
Texas - Mack Brown gets so much media sympathy, it reminds me of the love Tom Osborne was getting before he got his NC.
Florida State - They used to share this with scUM south. It seems to be fading a little bit and I suspect they will give it up for ND in another year or two. But the press does love Bobby and all that "Florida Speed".
As for how I think OSU fares, ESPiN aside, I think we're in the middle of the pack for 2 reasons. JT gives a bad interview, and our offense is unexciting. And in today's current climate, hard to give loviin' to a program with that "big cloud" hanging over it (screw you, ESPN).
I'd like to hear what you think - BB
