Luca: "but he was flailing his arms giving the slide signal but Giambi ignored him or didn't hear his yells...he said he saw the whole scene in slo-mo but couldn't get Giambi's attention."

Thanks for posting that. I never heard that before. Giambi was out in space coming down that third base line. I think the play caught him completely off guard.

And BTW, considering the fact that Posada didn't miss the tag (we know this right?), then that picture depicts it perfectly: OUT! The question was if Posada tagged him late, not if he missed it.

I still think he would have been out had he slid.

I think that would have slowed him down a bit.

The flip was a great play. He was even aware enough to block the photographer's view of the tag after he tossed the ball to the catcher.:wink2:

The dive is overrated. He caught the ball a long ways from the stands.

Couldn't agree more with that statement Bill.

"Ooooh look at me with my bloddy chin from diving into the stands, I'm such a tough guy, blah, blah, blah."

The press is so in love with him I can't believe they don't do daily reports on his bowel movements.

I have to disagree with you as well. That was an awesome over the shoulder catch. Have you ever even played middle infield to know how hard of a catch that was?

He knew the guy was under him but STILL never took his eyes off the ball.

I'm not the biggest Jeter fan in the world but have to give him props on that one.
you can give him props without saying it was the greatest play youve ever seen.

No way. Watch the play again. There's no way he could've avoided the stands. He was going full sprint after a borderline fair/foul ball. I used to have tickets right in that area. There's very little room in foul territory in that spot. When you sit there, you can practically have a conversation with the 3rd Baseman.

Thump: "The press is so in love with him I can't believe they don't do daily reports on his bowel movements."

Why shouldn't the press be in love with him? He's a class act, a nice guy, never says or does the slightest thing wrong, has the heart of a lion, is a 4-time Champion, a phenomenal talent, a hard worker, always gives 100%, and a future Hall of Famer. That's quite a breath of fresh air when compared with Barry Bonds, Jason Giambi, and other people they have to cover.

Sloop and 21, I watched it again - like it hasn't been shown often enough. My opinion didn't change. He was running full speed, caught the ball near the line, and he didn't have time to stop, but took two full strides before going into the stands.

I think we'll agree to disagree on this one. But Thump's got my back! Thump, what are you doing back there? Homo.

edit - I actually think last night's catch was better. That was a great play, but without the blood, it won't get as much attention.

And Jeter's still a scUM'er.

Happy Birthday A-Rod

Happy birthday Alex Rodriguez, he is 30 today. He has 409 home runs. When Hank Aaron turned 30 he only had 342 home runs. Do you think A-Rod will eventually pass Aaron in home runs?

Possible..but Hank played 23 seasons (never hit 50 HR in a season and only hit 40+ eight times). With the money A-Rod is making, I don't know if he will stay long enough...unless he does not have a ring.

I think he will. After this year, assuming he'll hit 10 or 15 more by the end of the season, he'll need to average either 38 home runs for 9 more years, or 34 home runs for 10 more years. It's really a matter of staying healthy (just ask Griffey).

Saw a thing yesterday that said in comparison to the career leaders, A-Rod has more homers, RBIs, hits, and (something else, i'm drawing a blank here)..... than those people (Aaron, Aaron, Rose, ?) did when they turned 30. So on paper, he's on pace to break many of the biggest records in the game.
