the guy came over and played help sized defense, id be more embrassed to be one of the three guys out on the floor. if youve never been dunked over youve never played at a high level and/or you play piss poor defense. this from a guy who has been posterized once or twice.

Those guys may have deserved it more but you gotta look at it this way...the Suns didnt have Amare the whole season, they lost Joe Johson, lost Jim Jackson off the bench, everyone through the team was doomed. Nash gets the team to still win 54 games, and he was obviously the leader.

But the Suns have a player called the Matrix... Shawn Marion. You heard of him right? Averaged 21.8 pts a game, 11.8 rebounds, 1.6 blks, and 2 steals a game. NOW that sounds like an MVP's numbers eh? I think it wasn't just Nash that got them to 54 wins, ya think?

Do the Cavaliers or Lakers have a 2nd player that is even in Marion's league? And those Phoenix Suns only won 4 more games than the Cavs.

The reason Nash is so valuable to his team is the position he plays. The same can be said for LeBron. Their roles in their respective offenses are designed to not only allow them to score, but also to facilitate the rest of the team. You can say that Marion is more talented than anyone the Cavs or Lakers have outside of LeBron and Kobe (though I think Lamar Odom deserves recognition), but that doesn't change the fact that a large part of Marion's success can be reasonably attributed to Nash being such a talented lead guard. Nash led the league in assists--by a lot. 1.6 more per game than the next guy, and 127 more overall. Assists, unlike any other statistical category (excluding points scored, obviously), result directly in points being put on the board. You tack on the fact that he posted 18.8 points per game on his own (while shooting .512 from the field, .439 from the arc and a stellar .921 from the line), and you have what any reasonable person would call a more than viable MVP candidate. Could you make an argument for LeBron? Kobe? Absolutely. Honestly, though, I'm shocked at how prevalent the opinion that Nash winning the award was a "joke" has become. All three of those guys are very deserving, and clearly you're not going to please everyone with whomever you choose. But anyone who is willing to say with a straight face that Nash being the MVP is some sort of travesty needs to have their head checked.

Here is the list of back to back MVP winners in the NBA.

Bill Russell
Wilt Chamberlain
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
Moses Malone
Larry Bird
Magic Johnson
Michael Jordan
Tim Duncan

For some reason Steve Nash just doesn't belong on that list of names. Sorry but that should matter. To win back to back MVPs you better deserve it. With so many questions can you really say that Nash was more deserving over Kobe, LeBron, Dirk, & Billups & so I don't forget Brand.

Then you look back last year as people still wonder how he beat out Shaq for the MVP too? So we have a player that squeaked out back to back MVPs?

To translate this to college football you can look at what if Jason White won back to back Heismans? To a lesser degree that is how I look at Nash winning the MVP.

I understand what you're saying, Piney, but I don't think it's reasonable for the voting committee to take anything outside the 2005-2006 season into account. Obviously Nash hasn't reached the same height of success as the other names on that list. Not yet, anyway. He'd have to win at least a ring or two and continue to improve (which he has been doing) over the last four or five years of his career to get close. And to be honest, OS, I agree. I think LeBron was probably a more appropriate choice. But I can at least recognize the fact that (a) my opinion doesn't matter, and (b) Nash was deserving of the award. Was he definitely, for one hundred percent certain the most deserving? I don't know. But I suppose that's why they put it to a vote.

The fact that he won it last year shouldn't take away from his chances of winning the award again. Steve Nash is one of the few guys in the league that could go on any team and immediately make them better. He doesn't have to be a dominant scorer, because each team usually has one and he would only take points away from them. He is the guy that distributes the ball, and controls the offense. He sets up guys to play at levels that they probably wouldn't be at without him.

true vbr, people shouldn't take anything outside of the 2005-2006 season into account but they always do. The perfect is "LeBron hasn't paid his dues and he will get his awards soon enough" or "Player X hasn't proved himself in the playoffs yet" or an older one is about Shaq. Because Shaq was so dominate he was held to a higher standard and as a result only has won once.

But it does happen. But back to what I originally said. I would not be surprised if Nash got the 3rd most First place votes but the most 2nd place votes and that ended up being the difference. And that would be sad.

you're ignoring the fact that Nash gives up more points than Kobe et al, because of his horrible D. Oh, but wait, defense shouldn't count in deciding MVP. :roll1:

Yeh Marion is a huge part of it, but when Nash missed games they got crushed. A PG is more important then a PF....PG runs the team, sets it all up, gets it running and makes at the calls. PW does all the dirty work inside, which is also important, but they are still a pawn for the PG to move around.

Yes, the Lakers do...Lamar Odom. He is actually as good, if not better. Odom has been giving Marion fits on both sides of the floor in the series and is also 40lbs bigger then Marion. Marion may have better numbers on paper, but on the court Odom does alot more the Marion.
