Game Thread Navy 27, at tOSU 31 (Sep 5th, ESPN)

Taking off the scarlet and gray glasses and then putting them back on yields the same result for me when looking at this game.
I see it like this
-Ohio State opens the year with these guys. The Buckeyes are jacked to be out on the field again, in front of a sold out crowd, with a new looking team. New players looking to prove their relevance while returning players seeking to prove their hype is warranted. I simply fail to see the argument for our guys not getting up for this one.
-The biggest concerns I would have about facing a team like Navy obviously revolve around stopping their option attack. That being said, I think our Defense is hands down the strongest part of our team. A proven defense line with solid depth and ability should be able to make plays and allow an inexperienced but talented linebacking crew to be in the position to make tackles. As far as our offense goes, Navy doesn't provide anything on defense that should be all that different. If we can't score on Navy, we ain't scoring on USC, it's as simple as that.
-The talent gap between Ohio State and Navy as bigger than the difference between Jim Tressel's IQ and Rich Rod's IQ. (If you're looking for the actual number on that, you can go to ESPiN.com and check out their stupid advertising to see where they stand.)
If we don't win by more than 14, I'll be pretty surprised.

Midline/Triple = plenty of cutblocking on 1st and 2nd level.

That worries me with injuries and also with young LBs who are over anxious and put themselves in bad spots.

However, having a dominant DL is the way to blow up the option....when quick reads become even quicker, problems occur.

I look for Navy to have some success and shortening the game. I see a victory but not sure about a 'blowout'

IMO, it will seem bad...the Navy offense is designed for that. They will push the field and hope the big dogs get frustrated and lose assignments.

Expect a long day but a solid victory.

In my opinion, the Wing T of high school is the triple option of college football...you have to play your assignments and play fundamentally sound. It can get frustrating because if you're out of position, it will show. In high school I hated playing Wing T's because they only do a couple things, but they usually do them really well (also because it's a boring night for a CB unless a jet sweep breaks loose ). It will be the same thing over and over with Navym but they will do it well. I see it being an ugly first half but after a half time adjustment, we shut it down and pull away for a 17 point win. We have a veteran DL and that is the difference maker imo. Also, I like the experience of the front 7 with Spitler and Homan at LB. Combine that with the athleticism of Moeller, Sabino and Rolle in case the option read goes outside, I like our odds.

It sounds like Navy may be weak on D though, so hopefully our offense will be ready to put up some points. I do think this is a great opener because we will have to be disciplined. It will be a completely different scheme with USC but the same idea in terms of being responsible. On a side note, it's a shame transfer students can't get tickets to this game :(

I seem to remember the Navy game being a replacement for a team that backed out, but I can't find any mention of it. The series wasn't announced until late April 08, which is pretty late, plus the return date isn't til 2014.
The Navy opener was scheduled to replace the return trip for the Washington State series. OSU offered to buyout the return engagement after they landed the USC series, Wazzu happily accepted since the matchup lost its luster when Mike Price left.

EDIT: Source is here. Announced in early 2006.

I think this game will be close one for about 3 quarters, then the defense will have figured it out on how to stop the option. The specialty teams will play a major role in the game also. I am still concerned about our offensive line play.I sure hope we can improve in this area of the team as whole. I think the O/Line will be a big measuring stick in the sucess of this season.

Bored and thought I'd look at this game a little closer. For those worried about Navy I'd simply offer that you should look at how they did on a game by game basis. I personaly throw out stuff like 558 yds rushing against Towson.

Things I do pay attention to are
  • that against Notre Dame they only managed 178 yds rushing and the only "sustained" drive they managed all game went for 5 plays and 58 yds
  • that against Pitt a) they got hammered, b) they managed 194 yds rushing c) they had one decent drive of 6 plays and 63 yards and that was it. Everything else was in garbage time.
  • Their passing offense was ranked #118.
  • Their defense was ranked 103rd in pass efficency defense.
Navy loses most of their offensive skill players. They played two teams that could be considered a close approximation to the talent level of OSU. Both teams beat them, both teams out rushed them, both teams held Navy under 200 yds rushing. Neither Pitt nor ND has anywhere near the overall talent level OSU has.

Don't turn it over, play your assignments on defense and this should be a comfortable win. They simply do not have the horses if we don't help them...a lot.

Throw out the stats. They rank #1 in heart and Magnum PI is an alum. :banger:

The other night I watched the Navy/Temple rebroadcast of the '08 game on Direct TV played at Navy. Temple was up on Navy by 20 points in the fourth quarter, an eventual 5-7 Temple, before choking the lead away and losing in overtime. Temple only averaged about 14 points a game last year so they did not qualify as an offensive juggernaut yet they were able to run and throw on the Middies. If I recall they had about double their usual offensive output. This was also the game that would make Navy bowl eligible according to the announcers so there was in fact something to play for. I know you can't judge by one game and it was last year but Navy certainly did not look like the team that beat ND a few yeas back. If you factor in what they have lost I don't think they come within 35 points of OSU.

This game can't get here fast enough! It will mark my return to the 'Shoe for the first time since Illinois in '07...a taste I'd love to get out of my mouth.:tongue2:

Anytime a team comes in with a well run, rarely seen offense, it should cause some worry. But, I think the Buckeye d-line will dominate the Navy offensive line, and I don't see how the Navy defense will keep up. Add in that it's the opener and the only warm up for USC and I think you'll see a focused group and a relatively easy win.
