NCAA Revenue and Player Likenesses

"Yo top high school prospect if you come to my alma mater, I'll pay you $200k to be in a commercial". That's what you want?

Yeah, I'm cool with it.

And when half those kids bust, they're going to feel pretty lousy about that $200K. But if someone wants to do it....let them.

I don't want the NCAA in the business of paying athletes. Let the guys/girls who can get paid on their likeness, do it, through above the table channels.

1.5% of them will make it to the place where they can begin a career in their industry. The rest surrender it to play a sport and get a second major in an industry where they usually aren't a valued commodity.

I would disagree that the non NFL kids are surrendering their marketability in return for playing CFB ( if that is what you were saying).

Then why does the 16 jersey hit the clearance rack in February? I agree that JT Barrett or Braxton Miller is only a drop in the bucket of the marketability and revenue generation for a juggernaut like OSU. That does not mean they should be able to sell JT Barrett jerseys or sell tens of millions of TV ads with his face (or even his highlight reel plays) throughout them.

When a cereal company wants to try that without officially owning the rights to use OSU's likeness, they have to remove all identifying marks and the end result is a weird, generic scene with practice jerseys and unrecognizable scenery and props.
Based on his popularity maybe they should've re-launched #7... I believe #16 is launched nation wide but yeah it would benefit OSU more so because our QB is obviously #16.

I don't watch OSU football because I see highlights of JT Barrett I watch OSU football for just about every other reason other then because of certain players. I do not care who plays for OSU and likewise I think almost every college football fan can say the same thing. They do not make college football run and they never will.

they're given a spot light in life that no one else gets and that in itself is worth whatever the school makes from a jersey that a particular player has worn that he shared with 120 past players over our entirety.

Exactly and then when they end up sucking and can't make the 2 deep you have a kid making 200k when a lawyer or a doctor don't even make that sometimes...

It goes both ways here if the players want to gain money for their performance too... Fine, but if you don't perform you get nothing and you pay your way for everything. Wait your hungry kid? Well then don't give up a 40 yard TD reception. Sorry no food staple for you this week.

What's that tuition is due? Then you shouldn't have thrown those 2 INT's that lost us the game in the natty Mr QB. Better be prepared to be punished for poor performances then.

So, what they're saying now is that college football is kind of lucrative after all? I don't understands.......How the hell can ESPN be losing so damn much money then?

The NCAA values a level playing field above all else (or at least the appearance of one - however blurry that appearance might be). Sure, tOSU makes enough cash that they could float a few bucks to their football players and no programs would be cut or otherwise suffer. If you attempt that the majority of the schools playing D1 football, you're going to have get that money from somewhere (general fund, or other sports programs). Assuming it's the General Fund, as someone who put himself through school (and saw the benefits that scholarship athletes were afforded), I would have been pissed if they were getting another $500/month for "living expenses".

I personally don't think it was that deep of a thought for Joe... IMO he just wanted a free cheeseburger because he contributes to what is a very profitable business in Ohio State football. The issue is they get a crap load of free food now and eat better then ANY college student by just their Victory meals itself.

I disagree that they don't get a fair shake of things too. Free education and more importantly a spot light for their careers after football every Saturday in the fall. If they have on their resume that they were a former buckeye you bet they have a leg up over anyone else in Columbus applying for that same position.

Also regarding the sale of jersey's there's always a great player for basically every jersey and there will be many more to wear those same numbers going forward. Who do you pay proceeds to for #45? Andy or Archie? #5 Michael Wiley or Braxton? #9 Devin Smith or David Boston? #2 Mike Doss or Dobbins?

For me a free education from a great institution worth easily 100k, a leg up over anyone for good paying positions due to your status, and having an opportunity to possibly make the NFL is enough IMO. Besides there's not enough "game changers" in college football that are personally responsible for driving ticket sales or merchandise sales. People pay money to watch their favorite TEAM play football and not individual players in most cases.

They. Aren't. Getting. It. For. Free.

They are getting it in exchange for the university making $100 Million off them annually. Playing college football is a full time job.

Edit: additionally, it appears that Ohio State thinks that it can continue to make money off them in perpetuity, considering the Chris Spielman law suit.

If I'm Ohio state I give Chris what he wants.. take him down everywhere and put up some weirdo wearing a #36 jersey. It may sound like a great idea to sue but you better believe Chris will be disappointed when he strolls campus one day and finds all traces of him are removed. Because that's what will happen instead of OSU paying royalties

Not sure how you can say it's not free when it obviously clearly is. These kids could be replaced tomorrow in D1 with kids from D3 that'd be more then willing to play in the current system. The kids 1000% do not make this game go and I'd watch our bucks if LVbuckeye was running slant routes instead of Parris Campbell.

Or, you know, maybe the school can compensate him for using his likeness...

And I'm 100% sure you wouldn't want to watch me run slants. Or maybe you would, to a yakkity sax soundtrack...

Where does it stop tho? OSU i would imagine uses images of him from his scholarship days so not sure how they're breaking any rules.

Without the d1 structre Chris would have none of what he has today. None.

I get why he would want to be compensated but did he even ask before filing a lawsuit to either take them down or compensate? Perhaps he did and OSU said fuck off who knows.

Tired of greed these days... people and their lawsuits for pointless shit. Chris got his due 10 fold from OSU.
