Game Thread Nebraska Cornhuskers at tOSU, Oct 6th, 8 ET, ABC/ESPN/2

I'm a bit late to the party, but I haven't had a chance to post since the game.

Amazing game to be at. Incredibly loud at key times which no doubt forced several of those false starts. Braxton was magical and guys like Roby and Simon really stepped up and took charge on defense. Seemed to me that the defense only struggled with big plays here and there as well as terrible starting field position several times but was otherwise able to stuff drives with ease most the night. I still can't believe they put up 38 points- it seemed like far fewer, but it was a bizarre game scoring wise.

Offense was firing on all cylinders after the first quarter... blah blah blah- it's surely all been said here. Switching gears, because what I really came here to say is this: If you go to an Ohio State night game against a ranked conference opponent in The Shoe and expect to sit in your seat at all, much less the entire time, please stay the fuck home and watch from the comfort of your snuggie. I was in 16AA, and there were dozens behind me sitting at the start of the game. Fine. Whatever, that's your choice. But when you yell at me to sit down because you cannot see, threaten to go get 'your friend' the guard to force me to do so when I politely decline, ridicule me, insult me, proceed to actually go and try to get said guard to remove me, get rejected by him (obviously), and then try to shame me (this man is a WWII vet and you are blocking his view!) into sitting down, that's when I tell you to go fuck yourself. And it wasn't just a single guy, it was several in the section. Even though I didn't think it was necessary that night, I was very nice about it- informed those nearest me I'd be standing and screaming when the game began and had no plans of relenting until the end, etc., etc. But that's all beside the point because the fans in front of me were standing too and I wasn't about to watch the poorly managed big screen all night. Sure, once those behind me realized that most of the stadium was standing, including everyone in front of me, they eventually came to their senses, but that experience aggravated me beyond belief and ruined the first quarter for me. (OK, our offensive production had a role in that too, no doubt :P)

Anyway, I apologize for the mini-rant, but if you take nothing else out of this post then take this- if you never have, do not buy tickets in lower 16AA as the regular occupants there are a bunch of uptight self-entitled ass hats. I for one will never buy a low level ticket to The Shoe again after that. Great win, go bucks! :osu:

fuck that - I'd keep buying them just to piss those types off. It's a college football game - it's outdoors, it isn't a tea party. People bought their ticket and can yell/scream/cheer/whatever (obviously not stupid shit) which you were doing. That includes standing up when you want too.

My thoughts after rewatching the game (in no real order of importance, but first the good):

1) Philly Brown: His blocking has really improved. Time and time again he was blocking downfield and making a good gain a great gain. Huge peel-back block on Braxton's big run when we were down 17-7. Nice return for the TD to get us some separation as well. Excellent job by Philly.

2) Ryan Shazier: Didn't realize how huge of a game he had...big time anti-Martinez factor and flew to the ball on multiple TFLs.

3) Redzone scoring: I feel our OL just salivates around the goalline. We really do an excellent job getting the ball in the endzone and in short yardage situations in general. The line gets excellent push and Boren cleans up whatever is left violently. Whatever RB is in just finds Boren and runs.

4) Pass blocking: Except for a few minor breakdowns, our OL really put the breaks on a good pass rush D. Fragel and Mewhort continue to protect the edge well.

5) Devan Bogard: EXCELLENT kick coverage. This young man is a big time hitter and is an absolute missile. He has a great career ahead of him here if he keeps it up. And on the special teams note, we are MUCH improved on our coverage as a whole this year. Safe to say UFM also values special teams.

6) Bradley Roby: Maybe obvious, but we can stop saying Roby will be our next great CB...he has arrived now if he hadn't already. Heady player, rangy, tons of ball skills, athletic as can be, and willingly comes up to tackle. Hard to believe he is only a sophomore...1st round pick for sure.

7) Crowd noise: Holy hell...we were loud. The noise messed up Nebraska on offense numerous times on the snap count and audibles.

8) Defensive line: All in all, solid job. Hank and Simon were spectacular as usual. Hank won't have eye-popping stats but he was extremely disruptive and influenced multiple bad passes. Simon did have eye popping stats, absolutely dominated, and earned the national defensive player of the week awards he got...5 TFLs, 2 sacks, and a forced fumble.

The Bad

1) Big plays given up on defense: I agree with an earlier assessment that we have 5-7 great players on defense that likely have NFL futures. Then the rest just are not up to OSU standards. The back 7 is wildly inconsistent (outside of our CBs)...no need for names but our safety play is awful in coverage, they don't wrap up, and take horrible angles. Our LBs are doing the best they can and outside of Shazier, they are perhaps the worst LB unit in the Big 10...they are nowhere near OSU standards. Hopefully the young guys improve but there are numerous players who just are not progressing later in their careers and I am just dropping my expectations for them.

2) Love Nathan Williams but he just isn't the same player as he was before his injury. He is still somewhat effective, but he does not have that same explosion.

3) Jake Stoneburner: Doubt it is his fault but we are seriously having issues getting him involved. He has not had a single catch in the last 3 games, while Vannett and Heuerman have done well from the traditional TE spot. I'm not so sure about moving him to WR...

- All in all, a great performance and we played a great offense, so let's enjoy the big win and get ready for IU next Saturday! :osu:

Agreed. There were a good number of people sitting on their hands in 26A. The lady in front of me kept complaining to her husband that I was screaming.

I was at the Texas game in '05 and couldn't hear myself because it was so loud. I felt more like the outcast Saturday night, but made sure to let everyone know that they could thank me for the false starts.

Nebraska kicker ruins Script Ohio October 6, 2012 - YouTube

I have no explanation for this. You'd like Brett Maher. He's a good kid, and wouldn't intentionally [censored] on anyone's tradition. But there he is.

All I can offer you is apologies, and a shrug of the shoulders. I have zero idea how/why this happened. This is not Nebraska Football.

If Nebraska wanted to make Ohio State a heated rivalry, this may have done it.

This thing might have legs. Marching bands are a great tradition for CFB and the kids work hard at it. When I was in college swilling beer the band member I knew had to be in bed to get up early to practice. They can compete for the Sudler Trophy

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sudler_Trophy#The_Sudler_Trophy

but it seems like there should be something more to recognize them. I'd be willing to put up an old brass tuba on our next game.

I cant tell you how much I wanted to be in the Shoe Saturday night screaming my fool head off. I'm not sure I would have my voice back yet. But... I was 1348 miles from the field and without a ticket. Oh well.

For what its worth, that attitude was not unique to Saturday. When the Rockies played Boston in the World Series here, I scratched and clawed until I got a ticket. I wound up sitting next to a Boston fan who quite seriously was complaining that the Rockies fans were too loud. I asked her where she thought she was??? Suffice it to say we didn't get along well. Unfortunately, its also probably true that the Clippers could beat the Rockies now.

I have not given up the idea of a trip back to Columbus before the season is out... I was there for CU last year, and try to get back as much as I can. Im also considering joining the Husker faithful on the 27th to help them shout down Michigan.
