Official Cleveland Browns Draft Thread

The Browns must take at least 2 offensive linemen in this draft. One of those also must be on the first day. I honestly wouldn't be angry with a draft of AP at the 3 spot, and linemen the rest of the way. When I say linemen i mean both offensive and defensive in that statement. Alot of games are won and lost in the trenches...

I'm not an NFL fan. I love college football and love my buckeyes. I do not watch the NFL, but if Troy went to the Browns, I must say I would jump on the Browns banwaggon. I personally, would like to see Troy go to the Browns.

1. He's from Cleveland and I think would bring some energy to team and to the fans.

2. He's the best quarterback I've seen at Ohio State and I could care less how tall/short he is and I think he'll be successful in whatever he does because of number 3.

3. Troy has the spirit that is not measurable, he has the intangibles that you need to the impossible possible.

And I read previous posts about the offensive line of the Browns. So here's a thought to consider, (and excuse my ignorance, I'm not familiar with all of the ins and outs of the NFL). Did not Ohio State have problems with their offensive line in 2004 before the game in Iowa? Wasn't Zwick being sacked like a bag of potatoes? But mysteriously, when Troy steps on the field, he has time to throw the ball and lanes to run in. Did the offensive line suddenly change personnel. No, it's because of Troy's leadership and the intangibles that he turned the losing season into a winning one and has had winning seasons ever since.

Browns fans.... you want a winning season????? You want Troy!!!!
:oh: :io:

I agree completely here. I want Troy here so bad. I know we need OL help, but agree that the presence of Troy under center will positively effect all fascists of our Offense. His mobility and pocket awareness are uncanny. His natural leadership and intelligence would make him better prepared for the NFL game as a Rookie as well. Not to mention what was said above about his being a Cleveland kid and he could mean to the Browns and to the Browns fans what LeBron did for the Cavs. Someone to really get behind, I don't know about you other Browns fans, but getting a jersey to support any player on this team is tough. Brickhands Braylon, no way obviously, soldier Winslow, not for me, but a #10 jersey with T.SMITH on the back, now that I and I am sure many other Browns fans could wear proudly. Like many of you, I have labeled this a make or break draft for me as a fan. I have defined it this way, if for some reason they do not take Troy in the first round and he slips to the second round, if they pass on him there, I'm done. I was upset with them for not taking Kudla in the late rounds last year, something like this would be devastating to me. I hope things work out for us, God knows, the Browns fans have suffered long enough.

No QB in the 1st round!!!

I do not want to see Troy Smith in a Browns uniform. The Browns don't run the type of offense that would work for him in the NFL.

I think we can get a decent veteran QB and rebuild our offensice line through free agency.

We would be crazy to pass up on Adrian Pettersen if he's still there at #4. Think about all of the teams that passed on Tomlinson. AP seems special. I know alot of people want OT Thomas, but he's already had 2 major knee surgerys. Throw him in a Browns uniform and its a given he will get injured.

If AP isn't available, then our biggest need is a quality NT. I believe Washington is almost 40 and if we keep the 3-4 defense.....a stud NT is a must!!!!

It looks like we'll end up with the #3 pick. Offensive tackle is a popular pick by most fans, so I decided to look at the OT's that made the Pro Bowl this year, and in the recent past to see where they were drafted.

Willie Anderson (Bengals) - 1st round (10th pick) in 1996
Jonathan Ogden (Ravens) - 1st round (4th pick) in 1996
Tarik Glenn (Colts) -1st round (19th pick) in 1997
Walter Jones (Seahawks) - 1st round (6th pick) in 1997
Jammal Brown (Saints) - 1st round (13th pick) in 2005
Chris Samuels (Redskins) - 1st round (3rd pick) in 2000
Willie Roaf (Chiefs) - 1st round (8th pick) in 1993
Orlando Pace (Rams) -1st round (1st pick) in 1997
Brad Hopkins (Titans) - 1st round (13th pick) in 1993
Flozell Adams (Cowboys) 2nd round (8th pick) in 1998

Amazingly, only one tackle not drafted in the first round has made the Pro Bowl in the last 5 years. This confirms what many scouts and draft specialists say, the only way to get a franchise tackle is to draft one in the first round. This is one of the main reasons I would love to see the Browns draft Joe Thomas.

Don't forget about Robert Gallery. :roll1:

A cop at the gas station this morning made a good observation that I ams sure many people would agree with, about Troy Smith potentially being drafted by Cleveland. He said that we got a good look at how it would look for Troy playing for Cleveland in the NC Game, with him running for his life all game.

Maybe. But I wouldn't be surprised if he's still there for us in the second round. I doubt Joe Thomas falls past the Lions, and since TB (who may win the coin flip) won't take Adrian Peterson, I'd still love to see Cleveland's first two picks being Adrian Peterson and Troy Smith.

I wouldn't mind getting AP at all, he'll be a good NFL back.. but Rueben isn't so bad.. it's the line and lack of everything else that hurts us running the ball. I'm all ears for a veteran QB, but Savage needs to do a o-line overhaul this offseason in the free agency.. hell of a job last offseason, now lets get them to stay healthy. We also have harrison back there at tailback, any word on how he's developing? AP round 1 & TS round 2 would be very sweet

If Troy is available in the 2nd, I think it'd be a shame to pass him up. Having said that, either way I think we need to sign a veteran QB. (Jeff Garcia would be a GREAT addition IMO -- he's been playing solid and takes care of the football) We have so many other needs on OL, DL, and secondary that he's probably not worth a 1st round gamble for us.
On AP ... I forsee injuries. He's only made it through a single whole CFB season -- and that was 2 years ago. With our injury woes... I forsee nothing but doom. Not to mention, we also need other things far more than a running back. The local team here (Broncos) have proven time and again that reliable running backs are not only a dime a dozen, but "dispendable."

You do remember 2004 right? When he was our QB? Garcia is successful because the system in Philly is a good fit for him. He flopped here once, and our OL is worse now than it was in '04.

I stand corrected. 2001-2004/early '05 is a blackhole for me with all sports (out of the country working and drinking a lot). I didn't even know we won the '02 NC until 2 days after the fact :(

With or without Troy, though, I think we still need to sign a veteran QB.

Anyone think the Falcons would give us Jenkins for Edwards?
absolutely they would. Jenkins was getting booed at the Georgia Dome routinely in the middle of the season. He did get better as the year went on but has not been what they thought he would when drafting. That said Braylon would throw a fit playing w/ Vick most likely.
