Purdue ready for Ohio State showdown
By Tom Kubat
Special to the Telegraph-Forum

A victory, any victory, over Notre Dame is a big deal for Purdue. But the reality is Saturday's 33-19 decision was administered against a winless Fighting Irish team.
Things are about to change. In a hurry.
On tap is the biggest game of the season to date for the Boilermakers. The mighty Ohio State Buckeyes are coming to town.
It's 5-0 Purdue against 5-0 Ohio State. The Buckeyes are ranked No. 4 in both major polls, up from eighth in both, and they received one first-place vote in the coaches' poll. The Boilermakers are ranked No. 20 by the coaches, up from a tie for 25th, and No. 23 by the media, moving into that poll for the first time this year."This will be my biggest game ever," said Justin Scott, Purdue's starting strong safety, a junior college transfer in his second season with the Boilermakers. "This is why I came to Purdue."
All this week the coaches and players will be asked just how big a game this will be.

For anyone who's saying a blackout is stupid and will just look like nobody's there...the point of a color-out isn't just for the players to be intimidated. It lets the players know the entire stadium is behind them, and in the words of Thad Matta himself, unites the fans. Even if it looks like a bunch of ghosts in the stands, it'll get the crowd fired up and the team's going to be ready to play.

We hit hard though, a few pops from Kurt Coleman will make anyone forget some stupid blackout.

But I agree, lol at those t-shirts.

Whatever, the color x out thing is stupid. I hope OSU quits but I'm sure we'll be hearing of a red out come the Wisky game.

BTW, the black was done by Maryland earlier this year(sorta) and it looked about as bad as can be imagined.

Actually, I've heard gray out being tossed around, which is even stupider than most "outs" do to the fact that gray is a neutral color. I'll be wearing my scarlet jersey to the game no matter what kind of "out" they decide on.

so... its a blackout huh? i didn't realize purdon't was having such financial problems. you would think if they were, they wouldn't have scheduled any night games. hopefully this game will make them enough money so that they can get the power turned back on. thats gotta be embarrasing.

do we hold the record for most "insert color here" out games in the history of college football?

Regarding color outs, and the above rationale....

If the players need a show of sameness in outerwear to feel like their fans are behind them, then that school has problems which a clothing choice can't cure. Likewise, if the fans aren't bright enough to realize they're all rooting for the home team, they'll need more than shirts to figure it out.

Back to Black

According to a Purdue grad that I work with, they tried this about 5 or 6 years ago. Selling a bunch of black T-shirts has to be good for Purdue.com or whoever profits from this gimmick. Their unis may be all black so why not have the fans dress the same way - kinda like going to their own funeral dressed in black just in case. Last week we had the opposite going on with Minny wearing their battle armor yellow. This week it's black, and we'll be in white jerseys again. The color doesn't really matter but it makes the fans feel engaged in the game. So maybe we should all wear white inside of the typical red you see in the stands.
If we really wanted to be dramatic how about this, it's the classic good against evil. Hans Solo vs Darth Vadder (Star Wars). Lancelot Du Lac vs the Black Knight (Camelot). Captain Jack Sparrow vs the Black Pearl (Pirates). Personally, black clothing makes me feel hotter because it absords heat rather than reflects - so when they are struggling in the second half to keep their cool, we'll be "zooming" by them in our cool white jerseys.

I don't think color-outs are that bad of an idea.

I mean if you do it, you definitely have to have everyone committed to it and participating.

From the perspective of a player on the field, it makes the crowd look like one giant being, instead of a lot of different shirts and individuals. My school does all blue / all black during most games, and it looks pretty cool from the field.

Of course, going from 7,000-8,000 to 100,000+ is a little different.
