Game Thread Ohio State 24, Michigan State 17 (final)

You know the only bad part about this game? About 14 hours after it finishes, I'll be crushing my legs through the downtown Columbus streets for 26.2 miles. I'm not really looking forward to that.

But, I've taken a serious break from drinking in order to get ready for this madness. A beer at lunch on Sunday is going to taste very sweet.

:oh:

How does their D stack up against our O?

.
Now there is an interesting question . How will a Dantonio coached D stack up against our O knowing what Mark knows about our offense and JT's ofense? Our O isn't all that great yet so how much can we score? I haven't read anything about the talent MSU has on D.

Has anyone else noticed this? #1 Ohio State flying high coming home to play in the Horseshoe against a Michigan State Spartans team with guess who as a coach? Mark Dantonio.

Just like 1998.

I was completely unaware...... :shake: :p

1998 is, if anything, one of the reasons why Ohio State wont lose in 2007. That Sparty team had "no chance" of beating the Buckeyes. It was over before it started. That's no longer the case. The Buckeyes don't line up against anyone expecting to throw their helmets on the field and come away with a victory.

If it's Dantonio you're worried about (and if anything, he's the key factor as a HUGE upgrade over Johnelle) consider he is 0 -2 v. Tressel, and has managed just 13 points in two tries while giving up 64. Before you say "Yeah, but that was Cincinnati, not MSU" consider that those Cincy teams were both Bowl teams... something MSU has not been since losing to Nebraska in the 2003 Alamo bowl.

What is this talk about 1998? I don't care if the Buckeyes are playing against the same school as then. I don't care who their coach is. Some of you are too busy looking at their sideline instead of ours. If you'd stop and look for a second, you'd see this man:

and NOT this man:

This is not 1998. This team will take care of business.

Exactly. Everyone kept bringing up '98 last year too, and we stomped them.

We have the same defense as last year (only better now). I think MSU scored 7 last year, at home.

Tressel won't let OSU look ahead, Dantonio says

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Mark Dantonio doesn't know if Ohio State is the No. 1 team in college football. Even if it is, he does not expect it will be the same kind of No. 1 team he encountered in 1998, when he was an assistant coach at Michigan State. Ten years of working with Jim Tressel taught him that much.

MSU out for No. 1
Associated Press

EAST LANSING, Mich. ? Mark Dantonio was an assistant coach at Michigan State in 1998, the last time an unranked Spartan team traveled to face a No.1-ranked Ohio State squad.
Result: Michigan State 28, Ohio State 24 in a huge Big Ten upset. The Spartan defense was key in that game, as it may be Saturday when Michigan State travels to Columbus for the first time with Dantonio as its head coach.
"I would use it as a motivational tool," Dantonio said at his weekly press conference Monday. "We were 28-point underdogs at that time."

Facing No. 1 nothing new for Spartan football team

MSU looking for 3rd win vs. a top-rated Ohio State squad

Ethan Conley
Lansing State Journal
EAST LANSING - Michigan State has three victories over top-ranked teams in 17 tries. The Spartans have a chance to make it four out of 18.
They face No.1 Ohio State at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in Columbus, Ohio. The Buckeyes took over the No. 1 ranking this week, after starting the season at No. 11. A 7-0 record, combined with losses to former No. 1 teams USC and LSU, has pushed Ohio State into the top spot.

Everyone is going to bring up 98' for a looooong time whenever OSU is #1, hell they still talk about 74'. I agree that 98' is totally meaningless in this game other than possibly as a cautionary tale for OSU to ensure they won't come out lethargic.

I would think the last 4 meetings before 2006 when MSU held a lead in each game and a 2nd half lead in 2005 and 2004 despite dimwit coaching would at least allow you some hesitation before burying the opponent on a Tuesday.

In 2004 it took Ginn going nuts vs a 5-7 MSU team w/o it's starting QB to beat them.

Both OL will get their first real test this week, MSU's because it hasn't been healthy and had a week of practice together until this week.

I keep hearing about how this will be the first test for the OSU OL. As a spartan fan I have real hard time believing our LB/DL is better than Purdue's or Washington's though.
