JONATHAN QUILTER | Dispatch
Ohio State defensive end Rob Rose pressures Troy quarterback Jamie Hampton. The Trojans were effective on short passes but did little downfield.

Facts of the matter

The Buckeyes had to be wary of anyone nicknamed Trojans, and while these men of Troy certainly weren't USC-caliber, they weren't fodder, either. Troy hung in for three quarters, trailing only 14-10, but couldn't land a knockout blow. In the end, the Trojans went home knowing they could play with the big boys but kicking themselves for a few blown plays that could have put them in position for victory.
"We had a chance to be in the game late and we couldn't quite get it done in the second half," coach Larry Blakeney said. "You've got to make plays and create extra possessions. They did and we didn't. Simple as that."
Shining moment

It had to be the 45-yard touchdown pass from Jamie Hampton to Jerrel Jernigan late in the second quarter. Jernigan caught the short pass at the Ohio State 40-yard line and immediately shed an attempted tackle by linebacker Marcus Freeman. Jernigan then slipped the grasp of Kurt Coleman and got past Donald Washington. Coleman had one last chance to prevent the touchdown, but Jernigan rode him into the end zone to cut Ohio State's lead to 14-10.

Live from the Shoe: Pass, punt, defense

That was a perfect way to cap off the game for OSU -- Pryor throws a beautiful pass to Robiskie to make it 21-10, then the defense holds convincingly -- helped by a Thaddeus Gibson sack, and A.J. Trapasso snaps off another beautiful punt down to the Troy 4-yard line.
Jim Tressel has to be happy about the way this ended: with a combination of a freshman QB making a play, his special teams executing and his defense finally standing up and throwing Troy back.
All in all, a solid rebound week after USC -- not necessarily reflected in the score, but with the way it could have gone very wrong at 14-10, and the way they have found a quarterback.
Pryor is not a project, he is the present.

Coaches Ruin our chances to win.

Don't know if anyone has commented on this yet, but does everyone realize that OUR COACHES ARE THE REASON WE ARE PLAYING SO POORLY> Did anyone see any of the offensive play calling??? We are playing scared. IF we had any of the coordinators from the NOT close to the vest mentality, we would get much more production out of our team. We throw to the TE once...touchdown, well now we can't throw to them the rest of the game? RIDICULOUS. Two series in a row in the 3rd quarter we find a way to run the same runnning play (in different formations) 8 times in a row!! Watch the LSU AUBURN game, their backup QB comes in and they have the confidence to continue as planned. Our coaches will cause us to lose 3 in Big Ten play. Its a shame that we have talent, and REFUSE to use it!! SEE BRANDON SAINE, 4 plays in the last two games, all of which are runs between the tackles?? PLEASE!!! I am so frustrated watching these games, and I can't imagine being a wide receiver, TE, or recruit watching our inability to call imaginitive plays and still want to play for these coaches. I LOVE THE BUCKS, but put down the kool-aid and look at the game, watch the replay this week on the BTN, and you will be as frustrated as I am that we have great talent but we are too scared to do anything about it. It will be a long big ten season if the coaches don't change their thinking. Here's hoping they wake up!!

I think I might only be happier if the Buckeyes never called a regular option or a reverse again. I wonder what would have happened had they called pass plays instead and let Pryor drop back and take off if he needs too.

Troy called the defense that defended the option well quite frequently. As a result, whenever we ran the option, especially to the wide side of the field, there was a very good chance that Troy was running the defense that had their players in a good position to stop it. Troy's players executed well too, most of the time.

There are two things to take away from that though.
  1. We ran the option often enough to keep them using that defense. They ran that defense on some of the big plays. Defending the option and defending the post are hard to do with the same call on defense.
  2. There will be defenses we play this year that will have a very hard time with the option. You will feel very different about it when you see the Buckeyes rush for 300 yards with it.

Get a grip, bonehead.

What "imaginative plays" would you have called? Considering the Bucks were starting a true freshman QB and a true freshman center (the "QB" of the OL).... The Bucks ran several "traditional" plays, but also ran TB draws, screens, reverses, play action, and threw the ball downfield.

What has BRANDON SAINE ever done to make you think that he deserves more than "4 plays in the last two games"????????????????? PLEASE!!!!!!!!!

Maybe most recruits know more about football than you do, and realize that "imaginative plays" might make highlight reels, but rarely do they win football games. Was USC's offense really that "imaginative" last week? Seems to me like they had a few well-designed plays (FB wheel route was one, a blatantly illegal pick was another), and a lot of bread-and-butter stuff, like Joe McKnight (you know, a guy with "freak speed") running between the tackles. You win games with fundamentals - blocking, tackling, execution, mental toughness - not with flash and dazzle.

You're right - 2002 was a long season as well. Heard the same doom and gloom shit back then, but 14 straight times the coaching staff was "too scared" to use its talent or "change its thinking" by calling "imaginative plays". Too bad it didn't work back then, either....

And by the way, if you are so sick and tired of watching the Buckeyes, then just turn your damned TV off and do your homework, or something....

This was a good "tune up" for Minny. We will see more of the same. But, the Minny defense is worse! Minny is playing better ball all around though and will make it interesting. I would expect a similiar score next week.

Anymore I wish our offense was less "creative".
IMO, the biggest problem is that the offense just seems to have no real identity.
They have tried so hard to mix it up that there is no flow to the game.
It seems like they just pick a play out of a hat rather than work toward figuring out the defensive tendencies and weaknesses.

Herron looked great today, and if we had kept on feeding him the ball (less creative!) I think the offense could have really started to roll.
But every time things started to click they called something fancy that put them in a hole they couldnt get out of.
That falls back squarely on the shoulders of the coaches IMHO.
