Big Ten Countdown - No. 4 Penn State
By Tony Gerdeman

Predicted Finish 9-3 (5-3)

Two-Cent Overview

Quarterback Anthony Morelli returns after a record-setting season (most pass completions - 208; most pass attempts - 386), as do all of his wide receivers. The workhorse of the offense, running back Tony Hunt, is gone, and he takes his dependability with him. Three offensive linemen return, but only center A.Q. Shipley will return to his position of 2006. The defensive front was hit hard, and only one starter returns. Vicinity-tackler Paul Posluszny is also gone, but the linebackers are anything but short-handed. Starting cornerback Tony Davis moves to free safety, allowing A.J. Wallace to step in full time with Justin King on the outside. The secondary will definitely be an area of strength for Penn State.

OSU faces one more with Penn State
Sunday, October 7, 2007
By TODD PORTER

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. At this rate, Jim Tressel might have to start working afternoons. Saturday night's game at Ross-Ade Stadium against No. 20 Purdue was the second straight prime-time game for the Buckeyes.

And it's still not their last. Ohio State heads to Penn State in three weeks for another 8 p.m. kickoff, which will give the Buckeyes three 8 p.m. starts in five games. The Purdue game was the first time in OSU history the Buckeyes played consecutive night games.

That wasn't by Ohio State's choice. Network television (in this case ABC and ESPN) decides which games it wants to do in prime time, and the host school has to agree to it.

Get ready for another "whiteout". Friends of mine went up this weekend and brought me back the white shirt that they are selling for our game. Has this trend not ran its course? :roll1:
Boilermakers infront of me at the game had on a Black Out Ohio State shirt, and his buddy had a Black Out Minny shirt..

Each week, I get more and more of a feeling that this is going to be an absolute beatdown. I think the Bucks are going to walk all over this PSU team.

If we can avoid the annoying trend of a nobody PSU QB having his career day when we play @ PSU then we should be fine. Usually we have to have a MUCH better team than PSU to win on the road and then its way closer than it should be.

I have a feeling that trend just might change this year. AM is that bad, our defense is that good and PSU doesn't have enough run game to keep us honest. Plus this will be our 3rd night game and 4th road game overall. None of the other places are as hostile but it does help negate the shock factor.

Also I am starting to believe we may be entering a time when we can stop using recent B10 history as a prognostication tool quite so often. What I mean is, we may just be entering an era where OSU is so far out in front of the rest of the B10 in overall talent, team speed and coaching that what used to be tough games turn more and more into Iowa '06 or Purdue '07 type outcomes.

Nebraska had that over the rest of the B12 for a while in the 90's
Miami had it in the BE
FSU had it in the ACC

Not trying to sound like a delusional homer but the thought is coming to me more and more. We are really good and the rest of the B10 is really bad overall. Illinois is the only team that can put athletes on the field with us right now and they have two major limitations...depth of that talent and coaching.

Anyway, back to PSU...still a ways off but I could see this one going the way of Iowa last year and Purdue this year. A team and place that used to be ultra scary, that once the dust settles we wonder what all the fuss was about.

I agree. What little I've been able to see of Morelli shows a boy that just can't get it done.

As for night games at opponent's fields, I have to admit that I have not been near as worried since the loss at Texas. Even though the score didn't end up the way I had hoped, something just changed with seeing the Bucks play a major OOC team that well at night. Happy Valley pales in comparison for me.

I find myself anxiously reading the above. It would be great for it to be true, but I don't want to latch on to it. Consistency, year in and year out, is more important than potential dynasitc revelations. I would much rather look back on the Tressel era of the Buckeyes, and then realize that they were THAT good for THAT many years consecutively instead of the flash in the pan that many of those teams above have become. I realize that CFB is cyclical, but for some reason, Tressel gives me the hope that tOSU Buckeyes can be even more for a much longer time.

Completely concur.
