Game Thread Ohio State @ Indiana - 09/14/19, 12:00PM (FOX)

IU fan here! I'm a little less optimistic than my Hoosier brother from earlier. I don't see the upset happening this season
1. Ohio State will dominate the offensive LOS. We can still not generate a pass rush without blitzing.
2. Michael Penix is the future. Those asking why him over Ramsay? Ramsay put us at a huge disadvantage, as he could not stretch the field. Causing teams to load the box against us. He got a majority of his yards off a very vanilla check down offense. Penix opens up the entire playbook and can make the passes to the hashmarks. Allowing the receivers to get YAC, Ramsays arm just took too much time to get to receivers.
3. I'm unsure about our open field tackling, we missed 20 tackles in our opening game against Ball state. 2 of the missed tackles were in 1 on 1 open space which resulted in two long touchdowns.
4. We have yet to run the ball well. <4 yards per carry vs a 1AA team is worisome, we have a lot of starts on our offensive line, and they are big and strong, they just do not seem very athletic. This does not bode well as your strength is in your defensive line thus far. Our pass blocking has been great so far , not allowing a sack.
5. We are one of the more experienced teams, but this is from back to back seasons with starting freshman. Our best days are ahead of us with our current freshman being our best recuring class of all time (38th), including three 4* athletes. So yes, our roster oozes potential , but our best players are still young pups and underclassman.
6. Special teams is solid. We used scholarships on Long Snapper, Field goal kicker, and punter. So that phase of the game will be trustworthy.
7. Strength of our Defense is in our secondary, athletes good enough to keep your wide receivers in check by not allowing the deep ball.
8. I feel Ohio State sets the tone and establishes a strong run game. Fields sees pressure from blitz packages but hits the 10 yard completions that start to add up. Ohio state leads at half 21-7, and cruises to a 38-21 game. Penix gets his first taste of a Top 10 defense and it bodes well for the rest of our season and his progression.

I get it. And I get that any visitor coming to this board probably thinks of their team more highly than they should (we do the same). I just don’t see the need to put them down. This board used to be a lot more vibrant than it is today, largely because message boards are dinosaurs of the Internet. But it would be great to add a few new people. Frankly, it’s been nice to have some visitors like our LSU, GA, and Florida alums. I always liked guys like Methomps, wish people like that were still around.

I agree

To a point

Back in 05, both we and out UT visitors expressed a lot of confidence. The UT fans turned out to be right, and some stuck around for awhile.

In 06, we were pretty obnoxious to the UF fans, but they gave as good as they got, the game went more their way than even they expected, and gatorubet is still here.

In 07, it was LSU. Their fans were very confident, again rightfully so, and Nutria is still here.

In 08, a lot of us took umbrage at the cocky confidence of the USC fans, but their team obliterated ours just like they predicted, but we got methomps, so it wasn’t a total loss.

I could go on making your point, but up to here, we’re agreed.

The common thread in all of these things is that the guys who stuck around had a thick skin, just like everyone who lasts more than a hundred posts here.

Was I a little sardonic?

Ok, guilty as charged. But for visitors to stick around and add to the board, it barely registers as initiation.

I’ve taken your position in the past; I get it, we should be a welcoming board. But at some point they’ll come to realize that we’re a bunch of sarcastic bastards, maybe it’s best that it doesn’t come across as a bait and switch

Methomps was around before the USC games, and it's too bad he's been scarce for a while. One of the best literally LOL moments I've ever had on a message board was when someone was going back-and-forth with methomps on Bucknuts, and he replied 'put cash in a paper bag and drop it off at Sepulveda (?) and Figueroa'. I can't remember the exact circumstances but it cracked the shit out of me about 15 years ago. Does anybody else remember the details of that?

Welcome!! Hope you stick around...

How do you think this defense compares to a few years ago when you guys had Scales? That defense was pretty good I thought and had at least 1 dude at every level.

You won't run against this line and use of a TE in pass game will be good. Safety is our weakness as I see it at this point. This will be the better offense we see to this point in the season but can't see your D or O line holding up. Thanks for the visit and breakdown. That said in light of game week, fist yourself. But do stick around. Seem like a good bloke

I think the jury is still out for the defense. We haven’t played a potent offense yet. I don’t think there is as much top end talent on the current defense. Scales and Covington are both on NFL rosters. But as a whole this defense is faster. More Big 10 quality athletes. A lot of gang tackling as opposed to scales getting 120 tackles in one season. Scales was very instinctive but slower and undersized (6’0 225) just always in the right place.

Our current defense is littered with talent and speed. Our linebacker Cam Jones has much more potential than scales, but may be out with a lower leg injury he’s currently questionable. Our secondary should be much better, than the team you reference. Our defense is just young. Our 2 deep defense is 14/22 underclassman. We just struggle to generate a pass rush so we disguise blitzes galore. We find a quality DE, yes this defense becomes top 25 worthy.

I didn’t see anyone put the guy down, maybe I missed something? Gotta have somewhat of a thicker skin on an opposing team’s message board. Those guys that are still around that you mentioned? They can take some heat and give it. I’d expect to be smacked around a bit if I joined a Whisky board and kept talking about how Ohio State stomped them in 2014. Not really relevant to this year at all. Par for the course.

I agree with the sentiment, though. I enjoy having those guys around. My apologies if I came off as an ass to the guy.

Come back, buddy! I’ll buy you a beer!
