Game Thread Ohio State @ Purdue - 10/20/18, 7:30PM (ABC)

I get that people are emotional after a loss, but are you really arguing against the proposition that Urban is light years ahead of Cooper in coaching? Because Cooper was good at recruiting...and that's about it. When it came to a big, rivalry, or bowl game, John Cooper was a complete deer in the headlights. 2-10-1. I hate those numbers, and you should too. They're brought to you courtesy of John Cooper.
No I'm arguing he is better than Cooper hands down but that things could slide for Urban if things fall wrong.

Good post. Not sure I'm buying the Harbaugh point in #3. Completely agreed on #4--those two drives turned the game. OSU could've been up 10-7 at the half (getting the 2nd half kickoff, as well) or at least should've been down 7-6. Instead, we can't get a TD and Haubeil misses a gimme, and then the D folds, and suddenly a "should've been" 3 point lead turns into an 11-point deficit. Then, on the punt, OSU has a great drive to begin the 2nd half, only to not get a TD (again), but still is within striking distance, only to have Hamilton inexplicably rough the punter (spoiler alert: that dude will NEVER block a punt anyway, so why is he even within roughing distance? JFC), and a few plays later, Purdue goes up 21-6 pretty much changing the game. Wow--what could've been.

From my seat, that’s pretty much what I was thinking. While the game was poorly played on most counts, they were inexplicably not out of it until the fourth when it went to a three score game. Even then, there were Purdue people in the stands saying things like, if anyone can come back it’s Ohio State.

What could have been...

Well, maybe the bandaid is ripped off now and we can see some changes to what they all know is broken.

Yeah I think it's better to happen at this point, because it was going to happen sooner than later this season. This way it doesn't effect the division and there are no longer expectation that magic switches will be flipped to turn this team into something it's not. Maybe with an extra week, enough tweaks can be made to keep the ship afloat and work towards a conference title. Or not.

That's what happened in 2015 at least.

Each year is different and there are still a lot of new players in new positions with new playing time this year. The performance on Saturday was timid. They missed guys like Barrett and Ward and guys who had been there before in that situation. The Penn State game *MAY* have been an aberration in terms of a hostile situation and them completing the comeback. Sometimes they have to lose to learn.

This may be the "sunshine up your arse" view, but if anyone can fix it, UFM would be on the short list of those who can. Whether or not it happens (which is undecided and will be so for two weeks) is another matter entirely.

Most of the team seemed to be playing like they thought they could just show up and win this game based on talent alone. Very little motivated play or discipline. Just like Iowa last year.

College football players today are a lot different than they were 10 or 15 years ago. A good majority of them have one thought in mind - the NFL. The motivation part is up to them selves and also comes from the coaches. Urban has to teach that and this year he is dealing with other issues in his life. That could be most of the problems that are going on at Ohio State.

Well, at least the team is still full of respectful young men. (From a Purdue team manager)

...probably was punishment for their play.

I watched the gifs of the game, and in the end the most disappointing play was a run in which Victor didn't even try to block his man. He kinda leaned on him and the guy ran right by him and held what should've been an 8+ yard run to a 2 yard gain. That effort isn't going to win or get you drafted by any teams. Should get you a nice spot on the bench for 2-3 quarters.

I dont understand the people (including people who I respect like Ross Fulton) who say that yesterday's game doesn't really matter b/c if they win out thy will still make the playoff. They will now lose all tie beakers after diarrhea'ing down their leg against an average team. They basically need Clemson AND Notre Dame to lose to get in even if they win out.

I also thought the attitude of the team looked a ton like Iowa last year, albeit Iowa took me a little more by surprise than Purdue. Knew this game could be tough and it was.

Since the selection thing is purely arbitrary, there are no really "tie-breakers"....just sayin....
