Game Thread Ohio State vs Penn State, 10/28/17 @ 3:30 ET (FOX)

Just let it sink in that this victory came from darts down the field and ended on a final downfield strike to a tight end.

Ohio State, we hardly knew ye.
Darts down the field? Lots of wins have come that way. But let's not belabor that. Yes, unlike in 2005, our tight end caught the game winner.

How about this? The most outstanding player in the spring game caught two touchdown passes and played a critical role in the biggest win of the season.

Great headline here.....

Ohio State blows out Penn State... with a one point win.

Ohio State’s incredible comeback was due to a dominant defense that set up J.T.’s fourth quarter

Before jumping into the numbers, it’s worth just appreciating how incredible of a game that was. J.T. and the receivers, the defensive line, and the fourth-quarter coaching were absolutely insane in this game.

Due to special teams, turnovers, and penalties, this became a very, very improbable win:

Things were so dire that Ohio State had a 2.7% win probability according to ESPN with under eight minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Ohio State faced the second-ranked team in the country and essentially gave them a 21-point handicap due to special teams errors.

This article is a must read for anyone that likes statistics......

Watching the final td pass to Baugh look at ped's DL. They don't appear to be trying all that hard, eh. Too Pooped To Pop !!!

In fact, upon further review the whole defense appears to be paralyzed!

I’d like to expand on a point refered to in these posts. The condition of both teams in the fourth quarter. It was obvious that Penn State ran out of gas. I don’t want to take anything away from the performance of any Buckeye last night, but you don’t slice through a defense that’s reasonably fresh as easily as OSU did, and you don’t shut down a good offense that successfully if both teams are on even terms blood-oxygen-wise. Thank you coach Mick!

The article in LandGrantHolyLand closed with this telling stat… "One final thing to note: While the Buckeyes’ fourth quarter comeback was extremely improbable, Penn State’s season average defensive S&P+ in the first three quarters was 14th — but they average just 62nd in fourth quarter defensive S&P+."

It’s pretty obvious that Penn State's game plan is built on rocketing out of the gate, putting the game out of reach, and gliding down to the final whistle. That doesn’t work against a team that’s bigger, stronger, faster, deeper, deeper and deeper over most of the 11 positions on the field.

Even if that team spots you 14 points.:urban2:

As well as being in better shape, the home field/crowd advantage was humongous/enormous/gigantic! And yes the bye week helped once the rust wore off.

Reminds me of 2015 'Bama down 21-6 even though the Buckeyes were dominating total yardage.

Recapping, no turnovers and shore up special teams and there is no stopping The Satanic Soulless Freight Train that is Ohio State !!!

Just finished the long drive back home to Connecticut a little bit a go. What a game. Still can't talk, can type though. Haven't watched a replay of the game yet but looking forward to it, especially with Gus Johnson calling. That had to be fun.

Just insane, didn't want to leave. We were as loud as we could be, but I mostly kept my 'kill 'em' howl for third ad fourth downs, and a bit of ref booing.

Such a frustrating game for 50 minutes.

It seems there is some chatter about the td/int call. Is there an intelligent consensus about that? Pretty clear he didn't maintain control and there wasn't indisputable evidence, at least on the jumbo-tron. What were they saying about that on TV?

Was the PI that negated the early INT legit, or was that BS too? There was also what seemed to be a BS facemask (would have been the old 5 yard variety, maybe) that cost us 30 yards of field position. Folks were really, really really pissed off at the officiating crew. I don't remember being so mad during a football game in a long time, and I certainly wasn't alone.

Anyway, don't want to dwell too much on the negative.

JT became a legend that night. After the fumble he went down on one knee for a good 10 or 15 seconds. Looked like he was praying. I thought that might be about it for him. Lots of football left in the season of course, but it as far has taking that next step. Turns out it was only the beginning. So glad I was there to see it.

This team has 2002 levels of fight. I don't even think the '14 team was tested like this. If I'm anyone else, I want nothing to do with the Buckeyes in the post season.

Just like 2014, the PSU game brings the team together and they suddenly realize what they're capable of. It's only gonna get funner from here folks. Buckle up.

And FUCK TSUN

There are a lot of parallels to 2014 right now. Loss at home 2nd game of the year due to poor offense, offense then puts up video game numbers against cupcakes like Maryland and Rutgers, then we have a dogfight with psu. Also have a stud first year starting RB and unknown receivers starting to break out. Plus we've got a sophomore Bosa. We're winning this damn NC

Everything about the officiating was BS. We'll just leave it at that.

The officiating was terrible. The announcers agreed that the PI call in the first half where Webb picked it off was a horrible call. On the reversal of the INT in the second half, there are lots of opinions but someone here posted the replay official rules and it seems that unless they have indisputable evidence that the call on the field was wrong, it should not be reversed. Using that methodology, I don't know how they could reverse it because you couldn't see the receiver complete the entire process of the catch after he hit the ground since he rolled to his right and you lose track of the ball when the two hit the ground and roll. No way of knowing if the ball was moving as Ward took it away kind of thing. Now it very well might have been a catch but I'm still perplexed how they had the evidence to change the call on the field. Just my opinion of course.

On another note, the no pass interference call in the second half on a JT pass to the endzone also cost us points since we had to settle for a FG on that drive. The announcers were all over that one as well as a bad no call. For a game this big, the officiating needed to be better. But hey...we won anyway so who's complaining?! LOL!

“But hey, you can’t control that. We control what we can control,” Barkley said. “That’s to come out Saturday, push each other and there’s going to be adversity. ... At the end of the game, we just need one more point than them.”

SNAP COUNTS: OHIO STATE SHORTENS ROTATION, 57 BUCKEYES PLAY IN FOUR-QUARTER BATTLE WITH PENN STATE

37969827162_49a6dfb67a_b.jpg

Ohio State coach Urban Meyer acknowledged during his weekly radio show on 97.1 The Fan last Thursday that the Buckeyes would likely shorten their rotation against Penn State on Saturday.

"The bigger the game, you’re going to have your A-pluses in there as much as you can," Meyer said. "When it’s time to go win the game, you want your best guys out there."

As Saturday’s game truly went down to the wire, with the Buckeyes needing a fourth-quarter comeback to earn a 39-38 win over the Nittany Lions, Ohio State did in fact decrease its playing contingent from most of its previous games this season. As it took the Buckeyes nearly the entire game to take their first lead and take control of the game, Ohio State’s starters and other top-of-the-rotation players took the vast majority of snaps in Saturday’s game. Only 18 players saw the field on offense while only 19 players took snaps on defense.

While at least 66 Ohio State players took snaps in each of the Buckeyes’ previous five games, only 57 total players saw the field for the Buckeyes against Penn State, with 20 of those players seeing taking the field on special teams only. While some players who had been in the offensive or defensive rotations were relegated to special teams duty on Saturday, there were numerous other players who had seen playing time in each of the Buckeyes’ last five games that did not see the field in any capacity against the Nittany Lions.

On the other end of the equation, though, many of Ohio State’s first-team players were in the lineup for the entirety of a game for the first time since the Buckeyes’ second game of the season against Oklahoma. And Saturday's game showed which players Meyer and the rest of Ohio State’s coaching staff believe belong or are at least ready to be on the field when a big game is on the line.

RUNNING BACKS
Mike Weber: 48

J.K. Dobbins: 39

Antonio Williams: Special teams only

Although Dobbins started his eighth consecutive game to start his Ohio State career, it was Weber – who played his season-high snap count to date – who was on the field for the Buckeyes when Saturday’s game was in crunch time.

After seeing no playing time in the second quarter, Dobbins returned to play most of the third quarter but was out of the lineup on each of Ohio State’s three fourth-quarter touchdown drives, even though Dobbins averaged more than twice as many yards per carry as Weber – who might have gotten the nod because of his increased experience in pass protection – in Saturday’s game.
