Ohio State Women's Basketball (2023-24 B1G CHAMPS)

'Her best is yet to come': How Madison Greene became a reliable point guard for Ohio State

Madison Greene has improved to 13.4 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. The sophomore guard has yet to realize her full potential.

Success and winning have been constants in Madison Greene's life.

A starter from day one on her high school basketball team at Pickerington Central, Greene led the Tigers to a state championship and a runner-up finish in 2018 and '19 before enrolling at Ohio State after initially committing to Penn State.

She wasn't expected to have an impact so quickly, but Greene has been an essential part of three top-15 wins this season and has established herself as a potential star in the conference.

“I've always believed that she was kind of built for those moments and the big stage,” said Johnathan Hedgepeth, her high school coach. “Her mind was trained not to lose in anything."

Greene has asserted herself as the primary ball-handler and a reliable scorer in her second season, though she is quick to acknowledge there are areas where she can improve her game.

The Buckeyes (12-3, 8-3) have slipped two games off the pace for a Big Ten regular-season title, but Greene has clearly become a key piece for a team with aspirations of making a deep NCAA Tournament run next season, when its entire starting lineup and all but one player on the roster are expected to return.

"We really believe her best is yet to come,” said Tony Greene, her father. “It really is yet to come."

JCO, unfortunately, 'no plan' is a plan.....the D was atrocious - on both sides of the ball. Believe the rim on both baskets was loose, but nevertheless, the Lady Bucks stopped shooting the three except for Jacy. She was all over the court, sometimes it looked like the other four Buckeyes were just taking up space. Poole had a good game, exceptional actually for a freshperson. She doesn't have the 'eyes' of Greene, but performed adequately. Never saw the cohesion that has been apparent in the Buckeyes earlier in the season, and covering the backdoor didn't appear to be a priority. Once again, McGuff was outcoached by a second year coach, and when the camera panned on the four coaches during a timeout, it appeared (to me at least), that there wasn't much coming out of them. Dorkas had another good game, but didn't appear to be much more than a decoy to allow Patty to dominate under the rim. Braxtin didn't assert herself, as a senior should, but maybe that's her role with both SHelton and Greene on the court. Really unsure of the second five, as they got the minutes, but not the scoring. Haven't studied stats yet, but the 'off-the-bench-scoring' looked like it favored PSU by a bunch.

Maybe they realize their season is coming to a close in a couple of games? Don't really see any back-ups to Dorkas or Patty in the tall category. There's plenty of guards, on the bench and committed, but don't have the bigs for in close D, rebounds, garbage put-backs, little things like that. Fire McGuff.

Missing Madison Greene for the 3rd straight game today. Buckeyes have lost both games she's already been out. That's not a coincidence.

Gal taking her place is decent but not good enough in the turnover or scoring department and the chemistry is a bit off. Finishing with a home finale win vs IU would be big
