Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

The gauntlet begins tonight for the Buckeye grapplers as they face the Wolverines,Hawkeyes, and Nits in the next few weeks. Wolves take the term "experience" to a whole new level as they have 5 post-grads in the lineup, several over the age of 26. Simply put, imagine OSU still had Kolin Moore and Luke Pletcher in tonight's lineup and they STILL wouldn't be the oldest on the mat! Anyways, it is what it is and our guys need to nut up and wrestle their best . I think only Sasso will be favored but there will be several other 50-50 matches involving Ethan Smith and Jashon Hubbard(JMO). So tune in to BTN at 7:00 and Go Bucks!

Flat out got embarrassed at home, that was a terrible performance from every wrestler not named Carson Kharchla. I know *ichigan is good and basically every starter has wrestled 5+ years somehow, but we have to do better than that. I'll catch nationals as I always do because I love wrestling, but I would be surprised if this team sniffs top 10. Just have to take our lumps this year I guess and look forward to all the top recruiting talent we have coming in.

Well who knows how Carson would've done against Cam Amine if he was cleared to wrestle. But he definitely dominated poor Nolan. And though Sasso didn't deliver the fall the crowd expected, he did ride him out nearly the whole 3rd. Actually my favorite effort of the night was turned by Romero, who gave everything he had in that OT loss to #2 rated Miles Amine. I know they had some older guys wrestling but did it seem to anyone else that in practically every match except Kharchla's that we were out muscled and out sized? We need to borrow Mariotti this off season.

All fair points. Carson had an inferior opponent, but was about the only guy that wrestled with a piss and vinegar attitude that I want to see from our guys...on that note, yes Romero did actually wrestle a hell of a match and his scrambles and effort were fantastic against a great opponent. The scrambles in OT from Romero were really fun to watch and he gave it his all, really hope he can knock off Amine at some point, he looked really good despite the loss. To some extent Ethan Smith could be mentioned, but he shut down in the clutch come 3rd period and really a disappointing loss where it could have been a really good win.

Definitely need to borrow Coach Mic, had guys gassed left and right, and mostly everyone could not hold the center of the mat and were just wrestling off the edge for their lives. No leverage, couldn't control ties, mental toughness was lacking...it is one thing to lose a dual, but to lose it like we did tonight is just not acceptable.

This loss hurt almost as the football one. Didn't watch, but in reading the above from those that did, wonder why/how the Buckeyes could come out so flat against Xichigan? I get the younger than Up North part, but these kids have been matsters for more than a few years, so unless it's a muscle mass issue, then just don't know. Here's hoping that Iowa and PSU will bring about some rebounding. Go Bucks!

There is a line in RB07OSU's post above that hits the proverbial nail on the head... "Just have to take our lumps this year I guess and look forward to all the top recruiting talent we have coming in." That is where we fans will find ourselves in most of these conference matchups this year. We still have 40% of our lineup who will be competitive in every match...Sasso of course, and Kharchla, Smith, and Romero. And Heinselman isn't far off that level but lack of strength kills him against the top 125s. Not sure how Mendez, Bouzakis, Shumate, Feldman, Geog, and Paddy will be incorporated into the lineup in fall '22 but I think most of them (especially Bouzakis and to some extent Shumate) are animals, so let's be patient cause help's a'comin!

Ohio State Reserves at Mount Union Tourney on Sunday

Here's some info on some of the Buckeyes that you maybe don't hear much about...
133# Andre Gomez won the class going 4-0 on the day. In championship he beat a Bucknell wrestler 3-2.
141# Klay Reeves lost in quarters to Kin of Mich. 9-6.
157# Paddy Gonzalez finished 2nd despite going 4-0 with aFall,2 Techs, and a major. The deal was the Buckeyes had to get back on the road to Columbus before the heavy snow started some of the guys had to forfeit their last match. Actually Paddy would've faced Jashon Hubbard in the final as Hubb had 3 falls and a 6-0 dec.
184# Rocky Jordan won with 3 techs. Other wrestlers there included Tyler Stein and Nick Boykin (197), Hogan Swenski and Mike Misita (285), Gavin Bell (184) and Will Betancourt (133). Interesting that Hubbard and Betancourt went varsity on Friday and came out to wrestle again on Sunday.

Guess wrestling doesn't have enough depth to 'reload' instead of rebuilding......do agree that the young 'uns have to learn, and for certain sure, the best lessons are learned from failure. I for one, have. Let's hope that by the Nati, these young men will have worked through the problems, 'cause all the wrestlers at Nationals will be either seasoned, or very very good at the wrestling game. Go Bucks!

Iowa wins a heavily contested dual by a score of 21-12.
Heinselman started with an upset win in Sudden Victory 7-5. We lost the next two 19-4 and 4-0 as D'Emilio wrestled tough but could find no offense against #2 Eireman. Sasso came from behind in the last seconds to get a RD and beat Murin 3-2. Hubbard lost 4-0too, again no offense. Kharchla wrestled one of the best matches you'll see this year in taking out #1 Marinelli 3-2 and sending the sold out crowd bananas. Smith tried to keep the mpmentum going but Kemerer was just a bit better 6-3. Kaleb Romero went into his 2nd straight SV match and this time won with a takedown over Assad. Hoffman wrestled probably his best match of the season but lost 6-5 to Warner. Heavy was no contest as Cassioppi won 13-4 although Tate did pull off a single arm drag td that you rarely see succeed. So OSU actually did better result-wise that I anticipated tonight as they took 4 matches to get some mo going into Sunday.

Ohio State vs Maryland 1pm Sunday on Big Ten Plus...probable lineups

125 #17 Malik Heinselman vs Tommy Capul (NR)
133 Will Betancourt or Dylan Koontz vs King Sandoval (none rated)
141 #23 Dylan D'Emilio vs Danny Bertoni (NR)
149 #2 Sammy Sasso vs Michael North (NR)
157 Jashon Hubbard vs Lucas Cardio (neither rated)
165 #7 Carson Kharchla vs Gaven Bell (NR)
174 #7 Ethan Smith vs Dominic Solis (NR)
184 #7 Kaleb Romero vs #12 Kyle Cochran
197 #20 Gavin Hoffman vs #32 Garon Smith
285 #12 Tate Orndorff vs #31 Zach Schrader

What to watch for... D'Emilio finally catches a break vs an unranked opponent. So do 6 other guys, but D'E really deserves it
Still gotta beat'em though. Bucks should take no prisoners. Hungriest guys should be Smith and Hoffman.
And a little note on recruiting. Luke Geog (Lakewood St. Ed) is really killing it at 182 lbs. against nationally ranked opponents. Seems to have found another gear. Can't wait till this class matriculates!

Alright then, that was a hell of a performance from our boys against a very good Iowa team. All I give a damn about in wrestling is effort and technique. That was present in every match against Iowa, whereas it was not against ttun. Very proud of our effort. Kharchla is freaking elite btw, I was pretty conflicted there but I'm a Buckeye at the end of the day. Romero also just came up huge. Hopefully we're peaking at the right time. Man I love wrestling, nothing better than the thrill of a takedown in SV with the crowd going nuts.
