Even with Hunter and Bo out (which undoubtedly gets us the win), that was a piss-poor performance. Tomasello had a chance to make a statement and fell asleep at the wheel after dominating the 1st period (make it clear, he is better than Dance). DiJulius struggled against a kid he should have handily beat and probably should have majored. Logan dominated. Languis wrestled #2 Carter extremely tough (guess it was true he was dropping to 149). Demas putted around like usual against an opponent he should have dominated. Kressevic was as expected in the place of Bo.

Then Martin...I am ashamed of his performance. Not because he lost, but because he gave up on his back in overtime and gave up 6 team points on the fall. Completely unacceptable and I hope Ryan sits him for a few weeks for that, even if the team takes its lumps. Courts had a very good win. Snyder dragged his feet in a lethargic win against a nobody. Tav also had an opportunity to make a statement and came up short, but at least he looked decent in an overtime loss. I am hoping we are just off to a slow start because even considering injuries, this is far from championship caliber wrestling.

I agree with everything you have said. Demas is a joke. He just has no drive to put up points and just walks around out there and only does the bare minimum. Tomasello needed to stay dialed in. DiJulius has watched too many of Demas's matches. Mark Martin's display was just dreadful. His overtime display was even worse. And the worst was thing was he pushed a bad position and held onto a losing position and get's pinned. If he just realizes that he has lost his position and the match the team could have come out with the win.

I would think that Ryan could do something about those 2 problems. Maybe not the conditioning at this point in the season but certainly the lack of aggression by some of the guys… No?

When you look at programs like the Gable led Iowa teams through the years. They didn't always have the number one kids out of HS in the starting lineup. But they had kids that were relentless and that never stopped moving forward and taking shots, pushing the pace. That's culture and very similar to how Urban views being aggressive on offense in football. I'm not sure OSU's wrestling program has that approach up and down the lineup right now. Demas has ability but when matched up against anyone with a pulse he goes passive and ends up in a lot of 5-4 type matches. Courts is the same - he should be dominating kids with his athletic ability. DiJulius shows the same tendencies. Campolattano was the poster child for poor conditioning and lack of aggression. Tav is going to have a lot of 3-2 matches wrestling like that. If OSU is going to win it all this year they need bonus points from guys not named Stieber. Hopefully Sunday was a wake up call.

I am with you 100% @Delaware Buck , the intensity and always attacking makes a talented wrestler an elite wrestler. I am coaching high school wrestling this year and I keep emphasizing that you can beat kids that are better than you with that mentality. No easy escapes, always pressuring them to their feet, battle position, run back to the center of the mat, etc...that is how Graham wears guys down. And we do not have that mindset right now. Not only does that mindset win matches, it pushes you in practice to go harder, thus taking care of any conditioning problems.

Martin and Demas are the two guys that really need to see the light and crank up the intensity. I was hoping Mic Jordan could beat Demas for the very reason that Demas stalls around and never attacks, while Mic is the exact converse. Demas beats some talented wrestlers by a point or so but it is painful to watch. Really need guys like Tomasello, Bo, and Snyder to up the intensity in the room...Stieber can't do it alone.

Wrestling #15 Virginia tonight, free live link below. Quick preview (rankings from Flo):

125: Need Tomasello to bounce back and get us some bonus points against an unranked opponent.
133: DiJulius faces a tough #12 DiCamillo...hopefully Johnny wrestles aggressively this time. I think he beat DiCamillo in HS.
141: Stieber might get a decent match against the #8 Spisak but he should win easily.
149: Languis actually looked decent against #5 Devin Carter against VT, but it won't get much easier with #9 Gus Sako. Tough match.
157: Should be bonus points going against an unranked guy. But it is Demas, so expect a one point win.
165: Hopefully Bo can go tonight, UVA has the #2 guy there in Sulzer...I would LOVE to see that match and it would be the premiere match of the night. I personally think Bo would take him down.
174: Martin faces the #7 Butler...hopefully he doesn't give up bonus points.
184: Courts should dominate, faces an unranked guy.
197: #9 Snyder faces #10 Nye...should be a fun match to watch but I hope Snyder is more awake tonight or he could lose this one.
HVY: Unranked opponent, Tav should win easy.

Overall: We should get the win if nobody does anything stupid and gets pinned. There will be a few close matches where it could go either way but we should get bonus at 125, 141, 157, 184, and maybe heavy. UVA might get bonus in 149 or 165 but that should be it.

Much better tonight, almost the exact opposite in a dominant 30-7 win. Very aggressive on our feet and kept attacking to get as many points as possible...announcers mentioned numerous times how aggressive we were. Only lost at 165 (major against our backup) and 174, but Martin was active in trying to score and actually wrestled a lot better. Hopefully we build off that and keep wrestling tough.

Cliff Keen seeds officially released (link). Really wish I could watch it live on Flo but I will be coaching our first big tourney this week. But this is the big first test and we will see (sort of, ton of injuries for us) how we match with our primary competition in Minnesota in tourney action. A preview:

125: STACCCCKKKKED weight class. Toms is the #6 seed. He has a chance at redemption against Dance (#2 seed) and Garrett at #1 (maybe the best in the country, either him or Delgado). We are getting an early preview where Tomasello stands in a tourney setting...could easily see him in the finals and maybe winning it but we will see.

133: DiJulius is the #2 seed but Dardanes from Minny is the #2 wrestler overall. Some really quality guys below him as well. If he gets to finals, he has a shot at a big time statement match.

141: Stieber should dominate but he will see #3 overall Devin Carter likely in the finals (his NCAA finals match from last year). The other Dardanes brother is no scrub either, so he should get some good work. Still, Logie Bear is on another level and should kill it.

149: Languis is still here (checked back in, still expect Hunter back in early January). I think he could still make some noise because beyond the top seed or two, he has a shot.

157: No Demas in the seeds...I'll try to figure out why he is not wrestling but this will be a weight with no placers.

165: No Bo either (notice why we have no real judgment against where we stack up at this point?). No placers here. I will try to figure out what is happening here but I know it is an injury...Bo is way too disciplined to miss weight or grades. Or he missed one and Jeff is running him ragged. I will try to figure out the extent of the injury.

174: Martin is the #6 seed and his weight is stacked here. If he cracks the top 4, it would be huge. He already lost to Epperly and Butler, who will be there and neither are even seeded in the top 4.

184: Good news? Courts is the #2 seed. Bad news? The #1 seed he would face in finals is the #1 overall Gabe Dean from Cornell. He will have to beat Stauffer again to get there.

197: We find out where Snyder stands...this weight is incredibly stacked (likely the best in the tourney). Schiller is #1 overall. Gadson is #3 overall. Huntley is #4 (Snyder beat him easy though). IF Snyder wins this weight, he will sit atop 197. Really intrigued to see what happens here. This is a snapshot of the NCAA's.

Hvy: The #1, #4, and #12 guy who just beat Tav are all seeded above him. If he can fight to a 3rd place finish, that would be huge.

- Best case scenario, we take a respectable 2nd behind Minnesota. No way we eclipse them when they are at full strength and we are missing Hunter, Demas, and Bo. But keep in mind if we are somewhat close with them, it should bode well for what February looks like.

Can't elaborate on performances, as I am just reading the brackets (but hey, my team went 4-0 in their duals though):

125: Tomasello had a nice win over Moisey before getting pinned by Peters (#3 seed). Hoping he just got stuck in something and not dominated.
133: DiJulius loses to some nobody in sudden death while the UVA guy he just beat pounded through his matches. Incredibly disappointing.
141: Logie bear with techs and pins, nothing to see here.
149: Languis eliminated after winning a couple matches.
157: Didn't bring anyone here.
165: Kressevic won a couple matches before being eliminated.
174: Martin won a couple matches and then lost to Kokesh (#3 wrestler overall in the country). Still alive in consi's.
184: Courts got pounded in his second match by an unseeded wrestler. Still alive in consi's but damnit that is awful.
197: Snyder curb-stomped everyone and will face Gadson in the semi's tomorrow. Huge match, Gadson is the #3 wrestler overall and will be his first huge test of the year. Beat him and get a shot at #1 Schiller, who has stomped everyone so far.
Hvy: Tav won a couple and lost narrowly in the quarterfinals. Still alive in consolations.

- Overall: Glad I did not watch this live. Piss poor effort again, even with the guys we have out. Courts is the biggest disappointment so far but Tomasello and DiJulius are about equally as disappointing.
