OL Darryl Baldwin (Official Thread)

Darryl Baldwin, DL Solon (Ohio State)

After seeing Baldwin in the Ohio North/South Game, I wasn't overly impressed. Yes, the frame is there, but the ability seemed to be lacking. In the Big 33 game, however, he showed himself to be unblockable at times. Although according to him, it wasn't anything too overwhelming.

?I thought I played well for not playing for a while,? he said. ?So it was good getting back out there and getting into the flow of the game. I thought we did great as a team.?

Baldwin's first big play came on a forced fumble, where he reached out on a pass rush and swiped the ball away from the quarterback, but the refs convened and called it an incomplete pass. A couple of players later, Baldwin left no doubt and took the quarterback to the ground. He was frequently double-teamed and still showed a good deal of effort even in the sweltering heat of Hersheypark Stadium.

He is still very much a work in progress, but the Buckeye coaches couldn't ask for a much better material to work with.

Aside from his performance on the field Saturday night, Baldwin will also be taking with him the experience of having a host family take him in during this week of practices.

?It was great,? he said. ?They do a great job with you and take care of you and feed you. They're great.?

?They for sure spoil you. All the time. I had a pool?I could just go in whenever I wanted to after practice. They always had breakfast on the table, dinner after practice. It was great!?

Interesting take from Duane Long about Baldwin as a potential LT.

Big 33

The talk of the Big 33 practices was Darryl Baldwin. I could not believe how big he had gotten. He looks like he is ready to get drafted not getting ready to step on a college field. Mark Porter has been saying left tackle for the longest time. I have always believed he was an offensive player but I thought the chances of him getting this big were not great. If you can see the great picture Gary Hosteau posted on Bucknuts make sure you take a look. The buzz is about him as a defensive player. I think if he does stay on defense it will be at DT. He is a straight line player. He goes right at his man with a bullrush. He does not have the get off to play end. He does not show the Motor City Madman that I want in a defensive player. What I saw last night is a typical Baldwin performance. What I see is D'Brickshaw Ferguson or last years NFL combine freak Bruce Campbell. That is how neat and trim this kid looks. He needs a lot of work to play on defense. He could be a fine defensive tackle. We have others who could be, who will be, great defensive tackles. We have nobody who can be a great left tackle. Well, until last night I did not see a great left tackle on the roster.

Bingo, Bango. I disagree with Duane on some things, but I'm with him all the way here. Depending on how Baldwin develops, he's got the skillset to fit the left tackle position.
I do love the idea of Baldwin on the tackle spot. It'd be quite awesome to have gotten an answer at left-tackle in our '10 class. However, do we see him as a multi-year type contributor, or a stop-gap for a season until someone else develops? His frame and size are ideal, I ponder at the rest of the skill-set and how it translates to Big-Ten style competition.

Right now, I think you see him as a project on either side of the ball.

I wonder if the coaches would actually consider to move Baldwin to LT . I personally love this idea, we need more Offensive tackles. And with the amazing 2011 D line class, we won't need him. Hopefully this happens.

I believe Duane Long mentioned this a while back. I agree with it.
