OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

Tweets are blocked on my work computer. Care to paraphrase for me while I have an early lunch?

Adam Jardy confirming that OSU and Holtmann are looking for 3 guards so if/when we get a commit from Duane Washington it doesnt mean we are out of it for Weaver/Muhammad

Jardy responding to Duane Washington's announcement tweet: Just took an official visit to check out the #Buckeyes. This is likely another good sign for Chris Holtmann's staff.

Someone's response to Jardy: Are Bucks going for 3 guards or will this take them out of the running for a guard should he commit to them?

Jardy's answer: Three guards. The depth chart is painfully low there.

I personally believe we are going to miss out on Weaver. He is drawing things out, the staff in-home visited to try to lock him down, he wasn't ready, Washington is committing today. With our desperate need at guard, the staff can't afford to get jerked around and miss out on guys in a waiting game for one recruit only to lose out in the end. A la Kobi Simmons.

I am okay with missing on Weaver because Washington has been my first choice for a lead guard/CG in the class ever since we offered him. That may seem crazy but he was great this summer, feel for the game and shooting is advanced but he also has good size and length. After he plays in higher profile at Sierra Canyon this HS season I believe the rankings will catch up to his offer list. He is already 88th in Endless Motor's T100 and a 4-star on ESPN.

I feel good about Muhammad. I think he will announce a commitment to us soon. Like end of this week/early next week soon.

There is certainly cause for this staff to pursue a third guard, if the can convince the right one to join Washington and Muhammad. I don't know if they can, but I imagine they'll try. I just don't think they will end up getting Weaver, though of course they would accept a commitment from him.

i tend to agree with this. i've been on the washington train since his offer. as i've stated before, i have a slight preference for muhammad and washington. weaver has the highest ceiling, but i also think he has the lowest floor. while he is the most creative and threatening ballhandler of the three, i also think he is the riskiest ballhandler of the three. in the weaver thread sometime ago, i noted how weaver is a high dribbler. given his height, that's not so good. weaver also tends to make the difficult, needless pass. over a span of many games this spring, (edit) he had an assist-to-turnover ratio of about 3:4. the ratio itself during aau play ain't the worst. the volume of those turnovers, however, wasn't so good.

i hope i don't sound like i'm downplaying weaver's game because it's looking less likely that he'll be a buckeye. i'd absolutely, positively love to have him. despite his flaws, he is still outstanding right now irrespective of his projection. but if given the choice of taking only two of the aforementioned three, my two are muhammad and washington. luther is a complete player, and duane is pure offense. i think the latter will arrive in college with a coach's son awareness.

by the way, i think endless motor's ranking is the most accurate. muhammad, washington, and battin (and henry) get the appropriate credit.

Yes, Weaver is not a pure PG, but he is a bucket getter supreme, and this program needs scorers badly. So I am hoping that if the plan is for 3 Gs, they lock up two by November, then have a spot open exclusively for Weaver if he wants in. If he doesn't commit in December, then find someone else like a grad transfer in the spring.

Holtmann is starting to get it rolling. Nice to see back to back days with very good additions to the program. I like how he has already been able to cast a wide net and find guys from out of state to help fit holes in the roster. This is especially key in such a class where the top in-state guys are all going elsewhere, without much of a chance for Holtmann to recruit them.

weaver has shown to get a lot buckets, but he's also shown that he needs a lot of shots to get those backets. between shooting and ballhandling, he must become more efficient if he's going to shine in college. i'm not saying he can't and i'm not saying he won't. i'm just saying that weaver's high value is mostly about the hope behind his projection. for a point guard, weaver has tremendous size, length, athleticism, and confidence. much of that can't be taught, so i completely get why holtmann wants him.

i went into a deeper dive of weaver videos the other day. i looked at highlight videos... of other players. players weaver faced. i saw a number of poor decisions and bad situations. he really, really likes the difficult dribble and pass. it's like he feels he needs to put on a show. one thing i can't stand is when a guard is at the perimeter and jab steps and then crosses over and then goes between the legs a couple times before going behind the back... and then attempts an uncontested jumper when the defender was a couple feet away the whole time.

Yeah, needless dribbling is all the rage in this new AAU/sportscenter/Youtube era. Too many kids would rather make 1 highlight reel play that gets a lot of views than 5 smart plays to help the team win.

Weaver to me is the most skilled/athletic option we seem to have a realistic chance at guard. I do have similar concerns about style with Weaver. That concern isn't as great since Holtmann is recruiting him because I don't think he'd take a kid that he didn't think would work hard to change that.

I'm telling you, just wait until people see the product he puts out in the Ohio State jerseys.

I've touted this dude big time for his coaching ability, but mix in this recruiting with the Ohio State media machine he seems to be embracing and I'm excited. The brand is going to blow up.

I just hope people aren't stupid about THIS season, expecting miracles. But starting in 2018-19, he's putting things together.
