If you like champagne and history, take the train to Reims. You can visit/tour Mumm and enjoy the free champagne. Reims has a cathedral de Notre Dame that was more impressive than the one in Paris, complete with a few pockmarks from German bombs. There is also a Roman arch that is a few thousand years older than BB73.

I've seen it - it's not that old.

There's lot to do in Paris...
Just a couple miles from West Branch and Lake Milton
You can slide into Ravenna for a wild night of drinking.. for cheap
They used to have tours at Lordstown Chevy plant and Ravenna Arsenal
I'd probably stay away from Youngstown
You could pop down to Berlin
And in less than 2 hours you could be at Mohican State Park

PS You might have to declare DEMOCRAT instead of SOCIALIST... to stay out of bar fights

A couple of suggestions:

Throw around, preferably while intoxicated, the phrases.....

  1. When my grandpa saved your asses in dubya dubya duece
  2. Let's be honest, froggy; who ya gonna call the next time the Hun comes knockin' on the door?

In seriousness

Spend a day walking around the Left Bank. In particular, walk up Rue Montenard.

Take the walking tour of the Parthenon

Go to Harry's American Bar. Make sure that The Ohio State University pennant is prominently displayed and in good condition

There's a great little bistro called L'Argentuil off of the Rue de Opera between the Louvre and the Opera House. Excellent food; no tourists despite the location.

The Maille mustard store in Place Vendome.

Also in Place Vendome:
For Manfred: buy some shirts and ties at Charvet
For Both: A cocktail at The Ritz (the original; not the compromised American faux lux chain)

Aux Troi Mailletz

It's a Jazz bar. Went there on a rec from a friend who worked there. She said it's the oldest / one of the oldest bars in Paris. It used to be a medival dungeon. Really cool accoustics in the cellar.

All locals, from what I could gather, when I went there last fall. I don't think the place closes...

Corner of Rue Galande and rue Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre.

The frites and onion soup are pretty good

We spent a weekend in Paris a few years ago and pretty much did the cliche' type stuff. The Louvre is amazing, and an obvious must-see. The oft-recommended Musee d'Orsey is cool too, as it's chocked full of impressionist works. We also went to Montmartre area and checked out the Sacre'coeur and the surrounding neighborhood.

We didn't make it out to Versailles, but hear it's amazing if you have the time for a longer excursion.

Have fun!

This! I'd sub out the Louvre for Versailles though. I love Versailes tho. Go there and there will be no question in your mind about why the French revolted.

I'll add Conciergerie - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia as well.

Make sure that you get to sample some absinthe. Not so much a big deal now that you can get it in the states again... but when I was younger it was cool to come back and tell people that I drank it there.

I'd also recommend Pig-isle too. Quartier Pigalle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Have fun!

Ended up going there twice!

There are actually two OSU pennants there, but I was sad that they aren't in the main room of the bar but in a side room.

I am thinking of surprising the wife with a long weekend trip to Paris over Valentine's day. Any suggestions on where to stay?

Normally I'd be happy for you, but we know too many of the same people, and - if this trip happens - you'll fuck things up for the rest of us guys... just take her to New Paris instead. Thx.

The rooms are clean, the price is right and it's centrally located about a 5 minute walk to the Louvre.
My other advise would be not to eat where the tourists eat. Take a walk, look for an out of the way bistro where it's mostly locals. Just because it's in France it doesn't mean the food will be good. The Latin Quarter is cool to see but don't eat there, all those little restaurants are a jip. If you do get hungry in the Latin Quarter grab a street gyro.
Also, watch out for the gypsy beggars and don't be surprised if you're out walking at night and someone stops to piss in the gutter.
