Phil Mickelson (official thread)

LoKyBuckeye

I give up. This board is too hard to understand.
Heard on the radio that SI will be doing an article on Mickelson that could really hurt his career... it seems that he has a pretty bad gambling addiction. I guess that he gambles in the millions of dollars. I'm not a big golf fan but was wondering if anyone has heard similar rumors? They were talking like it will be a pretty big deal.

Quite frankly, who cares? Does it affect his golf game? He has a hot wife, and plays some fucking awesome golf. I'm sure that the whole millions of dollar thing is a stretch, but who wouldn't have some fun if they made that kind of money for playing a game that we all pay money to play?

We'll see when the article comes how bad they attack him. I don't follow golf so it doesn't matter to me... I'm more interested if this is going to be another hatchet job on a sports figure for no good reason. I agree with daddy that it's his money he can have fun and do what he wants with it. They didn't really want to comment too much on it until the article comes out so I was just wondering if any golf fans heard of this. I guess he did win over 350k on the Ravens Super Bowl win a few years ago so he does bet big money.

Golfers in general gamble a lot. When Dan Patrick would interview Tiger he'd ask him how much he wanted to play him for, and Tiger would answer, "whatever makes you uncomfortable." Watch Tin Cup(yes I know it's not real), and you'll see Sadler betting Mickelson that Roy can't hit the green from 250 out over water, when he was caddying. These guys bet big money on a lot of different things. Based on Phil's ability to pick football games. I would guess that even if he is betting millions, he's not losing millions. As good as he is. He's probably at least breaking even.

I agree w/ Ironton. He does bet a lot - maybe even a couple million a year, but he also knows what he is doing and from everything I've heard, he does OK. He's making at least 20 Million a year counting his tour winnings and his endorsments, so I'm sure his family is taken care of. Judging by his play last year and so far this year, it certainly is not affecting his golf game.

Most tour players do bet alot when they play their practice rounds together - and they usually have some regular game. I'm not sure there are that many guys that would want to bet too high against Phil on a regular basis in these games. He's a birdie machine and that's what wins golf bets.

Now god damnit phatsacs, you know the rule, no mentioning of hot chicks without pics. I'll bail your ass out here but it'll be the last time.

I'm not IrontonBuck. He's a good poster on this board too, but, if he's actually in Ironton, we aren't even on the same side of the state. Other than that...nice post.

clarification

For the sake of clarification (even though I really dislike Mickelson fan) Mickelson USED to be a bigtime gambler, but gave it up around the time his son was born. Apparantly there were some complications that put his wife and sons life at stake, and it changed his life (and his dedication to his career, judging from his performance last year). I read this in an interview in this months Golf Digest.

Without a doubt he was a bigtime gambler though. The reports of him betting millions are off though ... they probably originate from him winning millions when he put something like 10 or 20 grand or so on the ravens to win the super bowl pre-season (I don't know what the odds were, but they were pretty long) the year they did, and having a radio in his ear listening to the super bowl as he played the final round of the tournament that weekend.

Can't wait for the masters to get tee'd off already today.
