Phil Mickelson (official thread)

For Amy, her girls and Lefty...

Not to mention all of us who either have had it or were touched by it.

Prayers for all...

I can't find the article online, but SI Golf Plus did an article on Phil in the March 23, 2009 release. The article was called "Why We Like Phil" and gave 19 reasons why to show Phil some love. Maybe this article will help a few folks see what a good guy Phil is.

Generally speaking, I'm not a huge fan of Lefty. With that said, I think it would be really cool if he could make a run tomorrow and take home the US Open Championship trophy to his ailing wife and the rest of his family. He's showing great character this week IMO.

See I think he shows this kind of great character all the time. He's one of the nicest golfers on tour, and through all of this, people are starting to see how big his heart is. I've been rooting for Phil for a really long time, but this is the most I've ever pulled for someone in a tourney, and I really hope he pulls it out tomorrow!!

GO PHIL!!!!

I saw a different side of Mickelson after his last bogey. I mention this because I am not sure you guys saw it on the US feed, as we see get the broadcast during US commercials because they don't show here.

As Mickelson walked to the next hole, a fan put his hand out and Mickelson "gave him five". It took incredible class to reach out to a fan at a moment like that. I hope that he and his family have a good holiday and that his wife's treatment goes well.
That's one of the reasons I particularly don't care for him. He wants to be a fan favorite so bad it doesn't matter if he makes an eagle or a double bogey he just keeps on smiling. I would rather have the guy wear his emotions on his sleeve.

Saying that, I wish all the best for his wife and do hope that they have a very nice family vacation.

Of course if he slammed his clubs, bitched and cursed and did some of the things that Sabbatini or Austin does on the course then he would just be a spoiled dick like them....

I have to say, it is a bit over the top......he literally has a routine for every tournament.

1. Smile
2. Put head down
3. Walk 3 steps
4. Lift Head
5. Make eye contact with random fan
6. Give random fan a thumbs up

Repeat steps 1 through 6 until ball has been approached.

It's laughable once you see what he is doing. I appreciate that he wants to be a fan favorite, but it could be a bit more genuine. He's robotic in his fan-pleasing ways.
