Pirates tidbits (2011)

  • If for no other reason than comic relief, I figured why not a tidbits thread? My beleagured Buccos seem poised for another awful season, so what's the best way to approach it?

Pirates consider need to raise ticket prices

Of course, we're talking baseball where money and performance have little correlation.

Arbitrators: Pirates must pay 1-11 pitcher $2 million this year

Amazingly, people still support the Bucs. It would be interesting to see how much if they actually win again someday.

    PirateFest draws record crowds

I did not attend. I guess the prospect of a manager who couldn't win with the Rockies - but the team won as soon as he was replaced by Jim Tracy who couldn't win in Pittsburgh - doesn't excite me. Managing the sinking ship of the Pirates is a tough task. When a guy can't win with legitimate big leaguers, what are the odds he can do it in Pittsburgh? :ohwell:

As a Bucs fan, I just wanted to chime in and say that the Ohlendorf arbitration decision represents all that is wrong with baseball. Here's an idea--take an already cash-strapped club and make them pay $2.025 million (a raise in the neighborhood of 500%) for a pitcher who went 1-11 last year.

At least they have some intriguing younger guys on the roster now (McCutcheon, Alvarez,Walker, Tabata). Don't know how long they'll keep 'em, though.

They should have all of those guys for at least 2-3 years, and they have other young bats in the minors, but they have NO starting pitching. Last heard Alvarez had put on a few pounds. I hope he doesn't Pablo Sandoval in his second year.

FA signings like Lyle Overbay are just a waste of money and a roster spot. :ohwell:

FSN Pittsburgh showed their first Bucs game of Spring training today. I flipped over for 5 minutes early, saw the first 3 Jays reach base and score, then flipped back to college basketball.

Toronto won, 5-0. Call it a precursor for another fine season of Pirates baseball. :ohwell:

Well, Buckeye hoops ended about 11 days too early but the Pirates season starts next week!

    Just shoot me. :bonk:
Hang in there, Jake. Ineptitude can be just as entertaining as winning. Okay, not really, but at least the Buccos have a couple interesting young players for the time being.

The Bucs only won 57 games last season, but they were 10-8 versus the Cubs.

Good team to open with this season, even on the road.

    Pirates 6, Cubs 3 :pirate1:

Yeah, it's only 1 game, but Pirates fans have learned to celebrate the smallest victories the last 17 years. I'll take it.

Let's see, win game one. Check.
Look good for most of game two but give it away late. Check.
18 years of history suggests today will be get asses kicked something like 6-0, and lose the series.

    We'll see...
