PK Blake Haubeil (3rd Team All B1G)

Blake Haubeil will get his shot to start for Ohio State, and he’s ready for it

Ohio State kicker signee Blake Haubeil is kicking better than ever, and it couldn’t come at a better time.

Haubeil and the rest of Ohio State’s Class of 2017 members who didn’t enroll early will arrive in Columbus on Sunday, ready to begin their Buckeye careers. Some face a difficult path to the field in 2017, while others will have a shot to contribute right away.

For Haubeil, his current situation is probably a mix of the two. Kicker Sean Nuernberger started for Ohio State’s national championship team in 2014, but he was beat out by a walk-on transfer in 2015 and then missed 2016 because of injuries.

He’s feeling better now, though, and he plans on taking back his old job in 2017.

“I definitely feel like I’m on my way,” Nuernberger told Land of 10 in April. “Injury-wise, I feel 100 percent. There’s no pain, there’s nothing holding me back. I really feel like I’m on track.”

I thought he was doing a pretty good job with the directional kicking. I also know that he kicked a couple out of bounds but it is still better than what has been going on with kickoffs the past couple games.

Maybe he has not participated in enough games to burn his redshirt but if he has I would certainly give him another chance.

I have no idea why he hasnt been handling kickoffs at least. His red shirt is burned already, correct?
Sean did exactly what Urban wants on that opening kickoff, and it ended predictably. As if there was any question about the strategy/blame, the slow upman almost housed one himself after stumbling around for awhile.

I will admit that the first kickoff was exactly where Urban likes them to be. I also am pretty sure that he tried to kick the ball where Urban wanted him to kick it on other occasions also but it sure as hell did not look very pretty. So either Urban is giving him some bad information on where to kick the ball or he is not just performing what he is being asked to do. A lot of those pooch kickoffs were pretty bad and I would like to see someone else give it a try if that is what they are going to do the rest of the season.

Maybe that strategy would be fine if our coverage wasn't terrible and you are kicking off to one of the most dangerous players in college football. I put the blame 100% on the coach making that call. Kick the damn ball out of the back of the endzone every time. I like our defense against any offense starting on the 25 way more than I like our kick coverage team's chances at pinning them deep.

UFM said we don't have someone that can do that and whether we do is apparently up for debate with that deleted tweet. We don't look nearly as fast as we normally have on kick offs either..

Disagree. I like the directional kicking if it is done correctly. Many times in the past I have seen the opposing team starting at the 15-20 yard line which is pretty chancy. Just giving them the ball on the 25 yard line just because we cannot perform a directional kick is really unacceptable and I certainly would not put a couple starters, which has been suggested in other places, on the kickoff team. That is just asking for trouble regarding injuries to guys who are on the first team.

So you're solution is leave everything as is? With all respect that makes zero sense ... If we can't kick it through the end zone and you can't cover that's not a great combo.

You can't fix not being able to kick it through the end zone but you can put a few starters out there to ensure things go to plan.

I said I like the directional kicking "if it is done correctly" and I did not say one word about putting starters out there. That was what I have read other places. Enough about the kickoffs from me.

Sure but you said you can't put starters out there due to the risk of injury in dispute of folks like me who want to see maybe 5 starters out there. You can't just continue as is expecting better execution IMO.. They've proven for 8 games they can't do that
