How about Antonio Smith? He has the most Buckeye leaves right now.
With that kind of logic you may take over the title of "Blowhard Statistician"... Say it with me, "Numbers are all that matters!"

BTW, my pick at this point in the season would have to be Troy... his intangibles are what makes him great.

I was down to Laurinaitis and Pitt, Defense wins out for me. 1st year starter w/ 4 Int's form the MLB position. Too bad I couldnt pick one on offense and one on D. Pitt has done exceptionally all season, and deserves more respect than some give him.

I think Gonzo has made some great plays lately, I think he should have at least made the poll.
Gonzo is a better reciever right now at this point in the year than Ginn is. Not a knock on Ginn but Gonzo is also the leader of this group of recievers and he deserves to be on the poll as much if not more than Ginn. If gonzo was returning kicks or punts he'd be doing just as good and perhaps better, IMO

But Troy is the MVP of this team to this point.

Q.P. without a doubt.

How many times have we been able to rush 4 due to his presence? Granted, we are blessed with very good d-linemen, but he is clearly dominant and has allowed our linebackers to play off the line and clog up the passing lanes.

How many picks/tips have our linebackers had this year!?

Zwick is a better QB than what 90% of the other colleges have and given Troy's desire to stand in the pocket and throw the ball rather than run I don't think they would lose much if he went down. Troy has only had 1 good run so far this season. It does seem like teams are more willing to bring the house when Zwick is in the game (based on JT comments on the Cinci post game show), but Zwick burned Cinci both times they came after him. There would be less ball knocked down at the line if JZ was QB. :p

See, now it's hard for me to make my argument as to how devastating it would be to lose Troy without implicitly criticizing a player on the team that I have slowly grown to respect about as much as any player that's ever worn the uniform - Zwick. And I don't want to do that.

But I will attempt to highlight what it is that Smith brings to the table that NO other QB in the nation has...

1. Unquestioned leadership.
2. Uncanny Poise.
3. Big Game Confidence and Ability.

If we didn't have that on this team at the quarterback position, I would not be confident at at all that we would go undefeated. I wouldn't want to know the defense without Little Animal, Pitcock or Jenkins. But I think we could still win the national title if one of them (God forbid) went down. I don't think we could win without Troy.

I don't buy that. With this forumula, the QB will always be the best player on the team.

A lot of times, teams are great precisely because they get great QB play. You can trace it down the line with SC's teams during the Leinart era and the Miami years with Dorsey. QBs are not always the most important component, and OSU's 02 team proved that you do not need a flashy QB and a sexy offense to win titles. But Ohio State's contention for this year's title clearly rests upon the shoulders of Smith more than anyone else on the team. And because Smith is not only a playmaker but also the undisputed leader of our offense, he should be considered the best player on the team.

ps. posting on the wrong thread. Totally apologize.

When someone asks "best player" I tend to think of the guy that plays his position the best. NOT the most valuable, or the guy we couldn't win without.

To me, Quinn Pitcock plays DT better than Troy plays QB, or Pittman plays TB, etc. etc.

James Laurinaitis

I had to go with James Laurinaitis. We all knew Smith and Ginn were gonna dominate, but losing 9 starters on defense is tough. Laurinaitis stepped up to the plate bigtime and is looking more and more like the next biggest thing to come out of Columbus.
