Well, there goes David Villa. There were reports just hours ago saying he had agreed to personal terms with Spurs, and now Barca is announcing he has been sold to Atletico Madrid for peanuts. Gotta love silly season.

For absolutely nothing in return too. I'm still scratching my head at the amount of deal. I can't fathom how even though at 31, he was considered by Barca to be worth jack shit. It makes zero sense to me. I think Atletico Madrid got an absolute steal in this deal & am disappointed he won't be playing in the EPL next season.

I interpret it as Barca doing him a favor. He needs top-level first-team football to try and win a spot with Spain in Rio. Atletico is a better place to try to re-prove himself in that manner since they have Champions League football and Spurs do not.

Spurs need a new first-choice striker and they are in danger of being the ones left without a chair when the music stops playing.

I find it odd they would do him a favor, when you consider they had him buried on the bench most of last season even though he was the 2nd best scorer on the team. I could see them doing it to give him playing time, but after his first season, they treated him like absolute dirt. I'm just astounded at the price they let him go for.

Still a long way to go in the transfer market, but the top players available at the position won't be there come the end of August. I'm sure they will make a move at that spot, but whether or not it will be soon, or at the deadline remains to be seen.

Benteke has handed in a transfer request to Aston Villa.

I'd say Spurs have pretty much zero chance of actually reaching a deal for him though.

Spurs make more sense for him than any other team. I doubt he'd be looking to leave the EPL and the only other teams in the market for a striker that can afford him are Arsenal and Chelsea. Arsenal clearly don't favor his style of play and Chelsea have his national compatriot Lukaku in the wings.

Spurs are the most realistic chance to me.

I agree with all of those things. I just think it won't happen because it would be a very Spursy thing to not find a way to get it done.

Jozy Altidore seals Sunderland switch - ESPNFC
Sunderland have confirmed that Jozy Altidore has completed his move from AZ Alkmaar for an undisclosed fee - believed to be in the region of ?8.5 million, which would be a record for a US player.

Altidore, 23, is Sunderland?s sixth summer signing and has been brought in to boost Paolo Di Canio?s attacking options, with the club heavily reliant on the goals of Steven Fletcher last season.

The USA international completed a medical on Monday and put pen to paper on a four-year deal on Tuesday, sealing his switch from Eredivise side and reigning Dutch Cup holders AZ.

United lose out on Thiago & now have set there eyes on Fabregas. Interesting. I'd be curious to see how Cesc thinks about this, especially considering he isn't a regular starter for Barcelona and could be tempted by being "the guy" again. They can offer him playing time Barcelona can't, but he might be happy being at home with friends and family. I'm really intrigued to see how this one plays out as I can see it going both ways.

United certainly aren't resting on their laurels. Although they were champions last year they were never a threat for the CL and even domestically didn't have the best record against top clubs.

Fabregas is a brilliant player, no doubt about it. He's also getting to that age (26) where this next World Cup needs to be his best. His star has dimmed a bit with reduced minutes compared to the emergence of Mata and Silva.

They never really got challenged at the top in the EPL as City had a pretty awful season and the rest of the clubs weren't really in any position to put together a run to catch them. They won comfortably and pretty much just coasted the 2nd half of the season.

Fabregas gets sporadic minutes & usually only starts every couple of games or so, or whenever Xavi is hurt, which is becoming more often. Even with that lack of playing time, he's a completely different player with the National team though. Always seems to perform with them in a starting role or as an impact sub. Definitely doesn't have the same "star power" he had when he was the guy for Arsenal, but that hasn't diminished his impact for the National team at all. Didn't get to watch a single live minute from the Confederations Cup this year, so keep that in mind with my perspective. I'm just going off of what I've seen from him with the National team in years prior.
